Last year, thanks to a bat survey by volunteer members, Merlin Tuttle's Bat Conservation was able to provide important testimony before Ecuador’s highest court, aiding in its historic decision to halt illegal mining threats to one of our planet’s most important remaining rainforest ecosystems, including Los Cedros Reserve.
The situation in Ecuador has only become more complicated, and the COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted both the efforts to TELL the story of mining on peoples’ lives and the environment, and the STORY itself, with the government accelerating massive mining projects without regard for environmental and human rights abuses.
The conversation is now focused on thinking up ways for big attention, big funding and long term connections for community engagement and world interest and impact.
Yes, the court ruled in favor of nature which is a huge win! However this leads to job loss in the community and delicate execution of next steps is essential for short and long term success.
