For viewers information: he wiggles the fish a little in the water before letting go in order to help dislodge and release any air bubbles caught in the gills. Thus allowing fishie to return underwater more safely Edit: also because breathing is a physical process where the fish needs to move to push water through their gills, forcing water through the gills a little faster doing this is kind of like letting the fish “catch their breath” after holding it out of water for a while.

Wolffish are considered a Species of Concern in the US. That basically means we know the population is dropping, but we don’t have enough information to know whether or not to put it on the Endangered Species List. They’ve been overfished and too often killed as part of bycatch. So releasing the ones that are caught is even more important now than in the past. Kudos to Jacob, his BIL, and their crews for releasing these freaky looking giants.

Hi Jacob and fellow followers! Story. In early 80s went to Newcombs Ledge (off Boston northshore for those who dont know) in a whaler with 3 others to fish. Very shallow out there at low tide. We used hand lines. Caught oh so many fish, surreal even then. Amongst ridiculous amount of cod and a few of the biggest mackerel I'd ever seen , there was one fish, approx 12 to 15 inch inch fish caught by myself. lt was long, muscular, big head, with rows of peg like teeth, big mouth and lips. Was strong fierce and squirmy. The filets were pure white and thickly flaked. I chose to take it home to eat.. It was absolutely delicious. I'd never forgotten. I DIGRESS For YEARS I asked the local fisher and lobstermen, many I've known, a few very well😉 , about what the heck it was.. They had guessed conga eel. No. Way different face. They had not an inkling, or dismissed my fish story, me, being a woman. It wasn't until a couple of years ago when I got curious again, I researched the internet and FINALLY found out it was a juvenile wolfish!!!! Eureka! I learned the shallows where seaweed grows is an ideal nursery for them. Also, by now it's endangered and protected. Not sure about back then. Ill never forget my wolfish and the nearly 40 years it til I identified it. FINALLY!!! Mystery solved!!! I've seen your wolfish catches and were delighted at the sight. Much different than the juvie but that squirmy action was telltale. I had to share my fishtail, lol, with you and others. Jacob, I love your content and adore you and your style! As you may guess I grew up on the water and your videos bring me back to the days of mtself being out there. I seldom am any longer. Thank you for EVERYTHING you bring to the table, literally and figuratively. Shoutout to crew and your family❤ Maybe one day they will not be protected and you can eat one too! I highly recommend. I'll be seeing you!! 🙋‍♀️ Thanks
