”Oh yeah, I got the job.” (Wait 2 beats for laughter to die down a bit…) ”…but I slept with him, so I think…” (leave that reflection hanging for audience to fill with laughter). He might have made an excellect, awkward standup comic.

Many years ago I saw an interview between Dick Cavett and John Gielgud. And Dick asked John about his role as the butler in the movie Arthur and why he did it, even though sir John did not enjoy the role at all. So John’s simple response was “well, I did it for the money Dick.”

Hugh telling the story of the hollywood producer reminded me of when i went to see my dad in hospital and the man in the bed opposite was staring at my dad and would not take his eyes off him.I asked my father why and he said oh dont mind him.I found out later that the man in the bed opposite slept with his mouth open and my dad in the middle of the night my dad had projectiled vomitted straight across the room into the mouth of the man while he was asleep.Gross.I dont blame him for being angry at my father.

@rumblefish9
@rumblefish9 3 жыл бұрын
I dont think its Maurice. Maurice wasn't his first Hollywood role (Maurice wasn't even a Hollywood production. It was all based in the UK even though Ivory is American). He's talking about The Bounty. He was cast in that but because he hadn't gotten his equity card, he wasn't allowed to continue with the role. He got as far as costume fittings. For Maurice, they already knew they would get Hugh because the co-screenwriter knew him from Oxford. Hugh even practiced lines with Wilby the day before because both were in the Oxford student movie, Privileged. Ivory also already saw him audition for Cecil in A Room With A View and he said no to Grant within 30 seconds because he thought Grant was wrong for Cecil but knew he would be great as Clive and remembered him in case they did Maurice.
