Luckily they did with only fingerprint reader. I guess there was hole in the security. Ex: I can use my fingerprint reader to unlock others phone just by swapping the whole reader. So they have done like this. What they should do actually is as soon as the reader is swapped, it should automatically calibrated and erase the users existing fingerprint and can only enter through Pin or password or pattern.

true not only for samsung. For example, i had a lenovo laptop. It had "macbook" written all over it, but the particular offender was the charger brick. It is shaped like apple's ones, the shape sucks imo as it tends to block nearby mains sockets. Yet they totally forgot to copy the good stuff - apple's charger have hooks to coil the wire, and a detachable mains plug with standard iec connector underneath, so i can easily fit an extension cable to essentially fix the shape problem... lenovo's one has none of that.

Hey ya'll, If you're a "Samsung Certified" shop or repair center, they give you a special Calibration block to recalibrate the Finger print reader when you put a new screen/fingerprint reader in the A51. Also Samsung gives you special access to software the general public cant use that tests and recalibrates all the phones feature. So repair centers that are "Samsung Certified" don't really have these issues because they equip them with the proper tools/software. The A51 is a more specific repair. You HAVE to use the calibration block tool and software for the Fingerprint reader to work when taking it out or replacing it. Unlike the flagship models that don't need the Block and instead calibrates all in the special software. This in turn makes it more difficult for people/repair shops to repair and replace these issues if Samsung hasn't certified you. Hope this information helps you and others!

Isn't it possible Samsung has done this thing with the fingerprint sensor for an entirely different reason, namely to block the possibility of swapping parts in order to gain fraudulent access? Or wouldn't that be a possibility anyway?
@mjouwbuis3 жыл бұрын
Since the fingerprint would be stored on the mainboard, swapping out the sensor should not matter. On the other hand, even if their security was that bad, the hacker would still need physical access to the device. Even then, the OS could just display "non-original part detected" and work fine otherwise. Instead, they choose to make the device malfunction in an obscure way.
@CallumCarmicheal3 жыл бұрын
The security concern is a big one, although there should be a way to allow the sensor to still be used such as after installation force the user to use a password like they already do when you first turn on the phone (on models like the Note 9) and then display a notification that lets the user "calibrate" the new sensor as we have already confirmed the user is allowed to use the device thanks to the pin or text passcode.

What ? Did you even watch goddamn video ? This does NOT prevent unlocking your phone. This prevents you from screen replacement, period. 3:23 - swapped SCREEN totally prevents fingerprint scanner to work, and it's with original scanner, original motherboard, original everything except screen swap. 6:00 - swapped FINGERPRINT SENSOR unlocks phone with non-registered fingerprints. Yeah, it does give error message, but I'm not sure if it's a problem for any banking software. So as a thief someone may just swap scanner, steal your data, open banking apps (because every fingerprint is registered)... Yeah, safety measure, lol.
@AndrewPanagi3 жыл бұрын

Easy solution: when booting after a repair or other modification, clear the biometric cache, and display the following warning: "The following components have been been altered. Please enter your pin to confirm your identity before continuing." Then list all the components that don't match the original device ID. And if they don't remember their pin, let them factory reset the device in its entirety. Recalibration tools don't need to be kept out of public hands for security reasons. It's pure business. These tools could be freely available online to the general public without compromising security.

I work on samsung phones and I've never had this issue. My theory is this: the screens/sensors are paired. However, when you purchase a genuine samsung screen it comes not paired and the phone knows this and doesn't have a problem with it and perhaps "pairs it" to itself. This could be done to not allow your phone to be repaired with a part that was possibly from a stolen phone. I do agree that samsung should clearly communicate this and not apply this retroactively.
