*I believe Samsung fixed this issue in a software update as people have been successful in having the fingerprint work after repair.* I hope Samsung fixes this issue or provides a way for 3rd party repair technicians to calibrate the sensor. Have purchased some Galaxy S21's to test the repairability of those. Also going to be looking at other brands of phones to find some repair friendly phones :) Share this video to help inform the repair community and general public! We need Right To Repair legislation.

I should be able to go screwing around in their swapping this and that... and even break something irreparably if i so choose... I had my screen replaced on my Galaxy A80 a while back, i was wondering if its just my screen protector but it wasn't, i have the exact same issue, though i could get one finger registered after trying it for multiple days of trying with a creme for the hands. Unfortunately i have the newest version so my kernel is version 4 and not 3 so i can't try that one, but i think this happens to all Galaxy phones with an optical sensor. It would be amazing if you could do a community poll, if this also happens to other devices, like the A21,the A80 and so on

Luckily they did with only fingerprint reader. I guess there was hole in the security. Ex: I can use my fingerprint reader to unlock others phone just by swapping the whole reader. So they have done like this. What they should do actually is as soon as the reader is swapped, it should automatically calibrated and erase the users existing fingerprint and can only enter through Pin or password or pattern.

I'm glad the Exynos debacle made me give up on Samsung a few iterations back. Makes me sad that you've had to go so far out of your way to confirm that it's kind of just a firmware update, meaning it's just a flick of the switch to lock down your entire phone from being repaired by a third party in the future. How far back would companies be willing to go to lock you into even their own Repair "ecosystem" retroactively?

@Algray_ 3 жыл бұрын
@@DeathInTheSnow To be fair, it's been a while since I last saw someone mentioning a Sony phone... And I mean it, a few years actually. The Exynos isn't the only issue, most of the "midrange" Samsung phones are still under-spec if compared to some cheaper phones, nowadays Motorola has been doing quite well in this aspect. I quit LG and Samsung already, gotta admit the new "Xiaomi" ban in US is kinda screwed... If that involves problems with Google and Android, that'll be painful for the company and its users.

true not only for samsung. For example, i had a lenovo laptop. It had "macbook" written all over it, but the particular offender was the charger brick. It is shaped like apple's ones, the shape sucks imo as it tends to block nearby mains sockets. Yet they totally forgot to copy the good stuff - apple's charger have hooks to coil the wire, and a detachable mains plug with standard iec connector underneath, so i can easily fit an extension cable to essentially fix the shape problem... lenovo's one has none of that.

@@iam5566 The knox encryption also considers the hardware. It started to consider it a few years ago. However, we've never seen a complete lock of a specific hardware until now. It makes sense to lock the fingerprint reader because if you manage to insert some sort of backdoor in the hardware you'd be able to access sensitive data. One UI prevents you from accessing data if the fingerprint sensor is changed forcing you to use a password. This behavior as pointed out by him started with more recent updates on the security patch. This is purely speculation of mine tho... Take it with a grain of sault.

Hey ya'll, If you're a "Samsung Certified" shop or repair center, they give you a special Calibration block to recalibrate the Finger print reader when you put a new screen/fingerprint reader in the A51. Also Samsung gives you special access to software the general public cant use that tests and recalibrates all the phones feature. So repair centers that are "Samsung Certified" don't really have these issues because they equip them with the proper tools/software. The A51 is a more specific repair. You HAVE to use the calibration block tool and software for the Fingerprint reader to work when taking it out or replacing it. Unlike the flagship models that don't need the Block and instead calibrates all in the special software. This in turn makes it more difficult for people/repair shops to repair and replace these issues if Samsung hasn't certified you. Hope this information helps you and others!

Isn't it possible Samsung has done this thing with the fingerprint sensor for an entirely different reason, namely to block the possibility of swapping parts in order to gain fraudulent access? Or wouldn't that be a possibility anyway?
@mjouwbuis
@mjouwbuis 3 жыл бұрын
Since the fingerprint would be stored on the mainboard, swapping out the sensor should not matter. On the other hand, even if their security was that bad, the hacker would still need physical access to the device. Even then, the OS could just display "non-original part detected" and work fine otherwise. Instead, they choose to make the device malfunction in an obscure way.

The security concern is a big one, although there should be a way to allow the sensor to still be used such as after installation force the user to use a password like they already do when you first turn on the phone (on models like the Note 9) and then display a notification that lets the user "calibrate" the new sensor as we have already confirmed the user is allowed to use the device thanks to the pin or text passcode.

Repair blocks like these could make for a good advertising pitch for other manufacturers like Google’s Pixel. Promising that they’ll never keep you from repairing your phone. I’d seriously consider them if they made that promise to its customers

So pretty much these days you rent your device from the company rather than own it since you can't repair it on your own, it's like renting an apartment where if something breaks you gotta let the landlord know because you are not allowed to mess with a rental place on your own.

Such an update has a real impact on what you can do with the device you supposedly own. Consumers should be explicitly made aware that they're giving up the option for 3rd party repair by updating.

This is the same experience you get after applying a glass screenprotector and setting up a new fingerprint and not going past 12%. Maybe it really has something to do with recalibration
@Shonicheck
@Shonicheck 3 жыл бұрын
8:56 yeah, right... so you need calibration on newer version, but don't need it on older one? Looks legit(no) Even if it needed recalibration, there is no reason to not include the software for that on the consumer device, since, you know, samsung mostly produces all its hardware by itself, so they decide how to use their ip cores, including the calibration sequence.

For biometrics I feel like this is kinda needed. Imagine someone stealing your phone then switching the fingerprint and being able to access your data, that would be the real nightmare for me. Maybe Samsung can distribute to some third party repairers of her choice the essential tools and software for the repairs but keep things like this for security reasons.

I'm very sure that the fingerprint data is stored inside of the OS, not stored on the sensor itself. I've swapped the fingerprint sensor on a Galaxy A11 and the new sensor allowed me to unlock the phone normally using my existing stored fingerprint.
@kovspbru
@kovspbru 3 жыл бұрын
What ? Did you even watch goddamn video ? This does NOT prevent unlocking your phone. This prevents you from screen replacement, period. 3:23 - swapped SCREEN totally prevents fingerprint scanner to work, and it's with original scanner, original motherboard, original everything except screen swap. 6:00 - swapped FINGERPRINT SENSOR unlocks phone with non-registered fingerprints. Yeah, it does give error message, but I'm not sure if it's a problem for any banking software. So as a thief someone may just swap scanner, steal your data, open banking apps (because every fingerprint is registered)... Yeah, safety measure, lol.
@AndrewPanagi

@@kovspbru Was there any problem with the screen? NO. The problem was with the fingerprint sensor, probably with a password or any other security measure other than biometrics would work fine, i dont know because of course i didnt test it. But the display was looking fine to me, there was not even an error message or whatever so i dont see your point of view.

Easy solution: when booting after a repair or other modification, clear the biometric cache, and display the following warning: "The following components have been been altered. Please enter your pin to confirm your identity before continuing." Then list all the components that don't match the original device ID. And if they don't remember their pin, let them factory reset the device in its entirety. Recalibration tools don't need to be kept out of public hands for security reasons. It's pure business. These tools could be freely available online to the general public without compromising security.

I work on samsung phones and I've never had this issue. My theory is this: the screens/sensors are paired. However, when you purchase a genuine samsung screen it comes not paired and the phone knows this and doesn't have a problem with it and perhaps "pairs it" to itself. This could be done to not allow your phone to be repaired with a part that was possibly from a stolen phone. I do agree that samsung should clearly communicate this and not apply this retroactively.

Samsung "Calibration" likely means record the serial number of the new hardware module into the registers of the CPU or similar to pair these two pieces of hardware. This will be a software that only Samsung has access to.
