To the people asking where the captain's armour went - the weight of it would have pulled him down and drowned him, hence Esmerelda pulled it off so she could rescue him. Plus it looked like the arrow was a lucky shot and hit him in the gap between the shoulder pauldron and his chestplate. This whole scene just shows how Frollo is descending into madness; burning all of Paris for the sake of one girl? Kyrie Eleison indeed...

1Drakorn It's safe to assume there was time between shots that was cut for the sake of saving film running time, so she probably would have been down there for at least 30 seconds. Also I just remembered on the commentary for this, they said there was going to be a shot of her under the water taking off his armor, but it was cut.

Rebecca Tandy Actually, in the book Phoebus is worse than Frollo (BTW Frollo is better than he is in movie, in the book he actually is somewhat good before meeting Esmeralda) and was in similiar situation as shown here: HE could have saved Esmeralda by committing on her trial (she was accused of wounding and killing Phoebus, but he didn't, because he would admit that he slept with Esmeralda then, costing him reputation and a fiancee, Fleur de Lys, in the result.

Karol Nowak actually the whole theme of the book is about the corruption of the clergy, in the movie the theme is shifted more towards prejudice and discrimination

Karol Nowak Yeah. The novel version of Phoebus is an asshole who only wanted to have sex with Esmeralda for one night and didn't even love her. And Esmeralda was quite shallow in the novel too because she rejected Quasimodo simply because of his deformities even after his kindness to her and still wanted to be with Phoebus even after she found out that he just wanted to have one night of sex with her then he'd leave her

John Lingard It is heavily implied the King (Louis XII) was fighting abroad, busy with the same wars Phoebus had been summoned from. Since Frollo is both a judge and a justice minister, the King probably gave him the power needed to administrate Paris and (almost certainly) the entire State. Ergo, Frollo was one awful, pyromaniac, bloodthirsty viceroy.

Just thought about this... Frollo lit the windmill on fire and it instantly went up in flames. In reality or in the event of said exexution, the soldiers would douse the windmill in oil and then set it ablaze. And also, wouldn't it have made better sense to use fire arrows on the roof instead of burning the windmill in the first place?

There was a lot of Disney movies we saw when I was a kid. One thing I remember about them, I used to mishear a lot of dialogue lines from them, the most estimated from Sleeping Beauty & The Sword In The Stone, but The Hunchback Of Notre Dame is another one of them films which I used to be like "Did Frollo just call Phoebus a 'bernutt'" as opposed to what I thought was profanity Frollo gave to him (the way he said it to him), which of course he said "burn it". Then there was the line "Get him and don't kick my horse" lol My favourite Disney film in general is Pinocchio, but if there is one from the 90s onwards, I give The Hunchback Of Notre Dame that spot. I also think Gary Trousdale & Kirk Wise are the best film directors to have worked with Disney since the 90s began.

This is definitely one of the most, if not the most INTENSE scene in any Disney film! If this film was made nowadays, it would've received a PG rating for this scene alone. However, this is necessary to show Frollo's cruelty. His death is so poetically just.
