“Gay Couples are Abnormal!” - Our Response to the W Hotel Singapore Incident

W Singapore recently shared our photo on their social media platforms and it went viral, gathering unexpected amount of discussions.
Actually, we are just a normal couple.
This video includes our response to the incident. We hope when more people know and learn about the LGBTQ community, one day, the LGBTQ topic will no longer be the issue that people discuss on the table. One day, slowly but surely.

I'm a Singaporean. It's a well-known fact that generally, we are a first-world country with a third-world mindset when it comes to issues like this and especially with regards to LGBTQ+. We still have a long way to go.

Please don’t take most of the comments you see online to heart! To be frank, there are still a majority of the Singaporeans, especially the younger generation, who are supportive of the LGBTQ+ community around the world. However, in general we don’t have as much exposure to the community as compared to Taiwan, and thus there will definitely be a difference in how both countries react to this situation. Overall, most of us in SG are really proud for W Singapore to make this move in our country. Who knows, maybe SG will be equally open to LGBTQ+ as Taiwan one day. Hope you guys continue to stay happy!

I just wanna point out that your picture is so beautiful and cute... How could anyone hate on it?? I was surprised that somebody would openly stand there and called you names just based on your sexuality. i wish some people could educates themselves and kept their inappropriate behaviors and opinion for themselves before they said something stupid and hurt other people. The W hotel really did a good job choosing this lovely picture! 2:23 We need more places like this so Normal families and normal couple and normal people could stay and enjoy their visit in a healthy environment! Just to reassure you guys that you have allies in Singapore. Not all Singaporeans are homophobic. While in general we may not be as accepting as Taiwan when it comes to LGBTs, the situation is already better as compared to perhaps 20 years ago. We WILL get there one day.

新加坡确实比较保守。 应该是在2018年有一个影片关于 Elder Singaporeans speak up about acceptance of the LGBTQ community，现在也找不到了，应该是被下了！当时也引起很大的争议。你不谈论它，并不代表他不存在。 其实我身边一半的男性朋友都是gay,我哥也是gay。 他们也和我们一样，追求同等的爱，他们也有权利爱人和被爱。 个人觉得每个人的接受度并不一样，如果我哥不是gay, 我也不知道我是否会接受LGBT。我接触过他们了之后，我确实可以接受。 我老公也见过我的同性恋的朋友，也可以接受他们。 我也曾经和他讨论过如果我们的孩子以后选择这样的人生，我们会尊重他们的选择，我们也会接受他们的不一样。Love is Love

I don't think it is fair to throw in the line that Singapore likes to think it is world class. In many Western countries where LGBTQ is legal and officially accepted, there are many instances of hate behaviour towards LGBTQ people, to the extent that they are physically assaulted. I say this because I live in a country which has supposedly the best LGBTQ rights in the world. At least in Singapore, the LGBTQ people are not physically assaulted.

Im Singaporean, i have LGBTQ friends and i supports freedom of love between 2 willing adults. It is not fair to say we think we are world class just because there are ppl who are against it. This is a young Country with multi racial and multi religion, and a lot of them are staunch believers. It is gonna take time for ppl to accept. We will reach there one day. What makes one person be right-handed and another left-handed? Maybe not the best analogy but close. Anyway, it's a part of our natural development, some will be heterosexual and some will be homosexual. But not to forget the ones that don't necessarily fit either category. 异性恋和同性恋是二个不同的范畴，如果这一点很多同志都不能认同的话，那很难聊下去！ 异性恋是天生的，那同性恋也是天生的，现在全球同志问题并不是同性恋本身引起的，而是把同志当成一种选票，当成一种获得利益的手段：） 那是可耻的！ 我非常不认同很多同志说每个人都有争取爱的权力。二个人没有性的吸引，能称为“恋” 吗？ 而大陆更多的同志会说“ 我刚好爱上的是一个男性” 这完全是借口。 二个异男之间没有性的吸引，可是他们的友情可以是一辈子，为什么？那同志是不是也可以向着这个目标走，那哪里来落单的同志呢？ 因为同志之间很大成份是性。因为性有吸引力，也因为性产生排斥性，大家想过这个问题吗。 最后我再说一句，很多同志说主流社会岐视，一定会有，但很多时候是同志强烈的自卑感引起的。就像现在美国闹得“黑人命贵“ 就是自卑，有些黑人这么有钱，还说别人岐视他们，谁敢呀，再说，谁会有这么空岐视他们呢？ 也许我的话很冲，希望不会冒范各位：）

I feel like this is the world we live in. Not everyone will accept LGBT and it's rather impossible for some people to accept. I think it's really a 50/50. I'm not against but I support (FYI). I'm straight but I still see BL, etc. videos on KZbin sometimes. I learn alot from different couple, straight to gay, etc. tbh. Everyone is not born the same. The first thing parents got to do is to get kids out of the internet and not bring them in at age 1...

That's very true that haters exist even in gay friendly countries. Just recently, in a neighbouring town to where I live in Ontario, Canada, a rainbow crosswalk to celebrate acceptance of LGBTQ was vandalized twice, shortly after it was 'opened'.

@@kelt5914 congratulations! Whereabouts in Canada did you tie the knot? Yes, Canada is very cold in winter, particularly more so in Alberta and the prairies provinces. Yes, Canada has beautiful natural scenery, but again it depends on where you are. You wouldn't want to come to Canada now...its COVID19 numbers are skyrocketing uncontrolled. And there is no political will to contain it. So, Canada is not so beautiful in that sense.

Really love to see how adorable the 2 of you are. It is really stupid of that woman to say how's she going to explain to her children about 2 guys as a couple.....because it is so simple, just tell them there are male-male, female-female couples in addition to male-female couples and everybody is entitled to love who they want. Lol. It is about love, not procreation. Love does not need to lead to procreation. I think a small part of the 'problematic' misconception many people have about gays is due to the proliferation of images of 'undesirable' gay behaviours like promiscuity, wild and indiscriminate sex orgies, public sex etc. Behaviours which actually also apply to some heterosexual. people. I have a gay friend who is every parents' dream son, except that he is gay. He is responsible, filial, conscientious and diligent in his work and very respectful. He had a successful career and is very financially stable. He would also be what every Singaporean girl supposedly wants as a hubby...with all the 5 C's checked. Despite his challenging career, he unwaveringly took care of his parents in their last years, both of whom suffered from rare neurological diseases which completely debilitated them. Every weekday after work he would visit them after work at the long term care home to assist with their care and keep an eye on the staff to make sure his parents are properly looked after. He stayed there till 12 midnight each time. On weekends, he would be there for them all day as well. The long term care home became his 2nd home. Staff there were amazed by his unwavering commitment to his parents despite his highly challenging career. I'm telling this true story because people need to know that there are gay people around like my friend. It is absolutely ignorant to label gays as disgusting. Wishing both of you a happy life together in eternity.

加油！新加坡和马来西亚在同性恋课题上都比较保守甚至排斥。在学校，这甚至是禁忌课题，根本不太能提起。不像泰国和台湾，包容性很强。同性恋不是病，爱情是不分性别的。

A couple’s love since beginning of time is always a man and a woman and this practice has been carried out through generations. Agreed that there are many husband and wife are without children for various reasons - bad childhood experiences, cannot give birth, financial reasons or even do not like kids. Yet there are still many many couples will want to have their offsprings and start a normal family. Even for us, you and me included, if our parents did not love and marry each other, we will not be here today. Human being are not like plant where we can procreate within the same sex. If everyone think that LGBT relationship is normal, then we will be endangered species very soon!
