The London musician and producer, Gabriel Prokofiev, who once did a bit of research in Tanzanian music wrote that Hukwe Zawose represents what can be called classical Tanzanian music. He was right. There was none who carried and epitomised that line like this genius. Wagogo people of central Tanzania are the most musical and melodic. And here is a microcosm. The family still carries the light. You want a taste of African melody? Before you try out the African American blues and all that? Start here...

I met Hukwe's son, Msafiri, while traveling in Tanzania. He's a wonderful person and an amazing musician, and I had the honor to play with him. I guess it's him you mean with "the family still carries the light"?

I watched a documentary on him once. It's truly sad how he and most of his family passed away. Since this tribe in Tanzania believes in the polygamous six wives rule, they were susceptible to AIDS and had little knowledge of the dangers of sexual intercourse through multiple partners. Hukwe's music didn't live on either, for shortly after his and his nephew's death, the younger generations got more influence with the sounds of urban music. But despite this, he lived a very fulfilling life, performing in many parts of Europe, America, and even Japan right down to his and his tribes country...
