It is fascinating to see birds that are traveling hundreds of miles if not more... I always think of how migration is repeated year after year for birds for thousands, millions of years. Makes us kinda small in the scheme of things but no less vital. Lovely to hear the cranes calling and to see so many. They must be hungry and tired but still have that push to travel, some to a place they will see for the first time. It is a wonder dear Judith. Bird migration is a fascinating subject and you really cannot talk about it too much.Migratory birds use a magnetic compass in their eye for navigation. And birds, migratory or not, are probably the most mobile species. The birds that arrive in the Hula Valley are fed by the Israeli government in order to keep them out of neighbouring farmers' fields. The Hula Valley is near the Lebanese border and with the ongoing war, I've noticed that migrating birds that hung around for weeks in the past now seem to make it an overnight stop. They arrive in the afternoon and depart early in the morning. There also seems to be more jackals hanging around the water, perhaps hungrier than they would normally be. Out of the 2 billion migrating birds over the Middle East, almost 3 million migrating storks are killed anually for sport over Lebanon and those that survive are treated like royalty when they arrive in the Hula Valley.
