Curious about converting your boat to electric propulsion? Many wonder which power boat is best suited for such a transformation. The answer lies in understanding the nuances between semi-displacement and semi-planing hull designs. While both are considered for electric conversion, one might prove more efficient, placing less strain on the electric motor and conserving battery power. In this video, I touch on the main differences between the two and their impact on electric propulsion.

Weather in Ireland is also cold, (so much for the promised global warming) as for gas prices, diesel is 2.10 euro a liter and petrol is 2.20 . If memory serves me right there is about 5 ltrs to a gallon. I have a lobster style boat running on a Perkins 4107 diesel. I would love to convert. Mostly for the quiet but the savings in fuel would also be very welcome. Love the updates. Thanks.

I love the lobster style boats. Possibly my next mad money project 🤪 Btw, 3.785 liters to a US gallon. Currently sitting at $8.70 Cdn / €6.35 per US gallon. :(

$8.98 for dockside unleaded in San Diego. I’m glad I trailer mine & get it for $5.90. But still, fuel is part of the expense, but not all of it.

Ouch! Yeah that is pricey. That's about what we're paying up here. The worst part is that we produce more oil than we domestically need and yet somehow we have to import almost 50% of other nations oil?! After 20 years I have yet to find a reasonable answer as to why this is.

I have been watching many of your videos. I have been driving an EV since 2012. I am now pondering the process of converting our 1989 Doral cabin cruiser to electric. I am presently attempting to determine how much power (kW) I will need to obtain a cruising speed of 5.4 knots (10 kph). My present plan would be to leave the stern drives as they are, remove the ICE and connect the electric motors to the stern drives. Maybe I have not watched enough videos, yet, to see where you discussed the determination of gear ratio between your electric motor and the propellers.

When I did the conversion I wanted to keep the original prop and stay as close to the original gear ratio as possible to see how the boat would behave. It's easier and cheaper to swap out pulleys and belts than it is to swap propellers. What you could do first is find out the gear ratio of your current ICE set up then find out what engine RPM it takes to maintain 5.4 knots. For example if it's a 2:1 gear ratio and it takes 3000 RPM to maintain that then you know that your prospeed is 1500 (2:1). Now you have to find a high torque motor that can deliver 3000 RPM comfortably without drawing too much power. From there you can swap pulleys and/or props. The bigger the pulley the more torque delivered at the prop but you lose RPM. And if you lose RPM you will lose overaĺl speed. But if you go with a smaller pulley you are putting more load on the motor which is going to require more power from the batteries. Ultimately you'll probably just have to play around a little bit but I would start by finding out your current gear ratio, engine speed and prop speed at the desired cruising speed. A lot of people will tell you to put a larger flatter prop on the boat which does make sense but for eTolly we didn't have the clearance to go with a larger diameter. So we stayed with the original props.

@@ElectricCruiser Thank you very much. I am presently attempting to track down the data for the gear ratio between the engine and the propeller.

Is the Tollycraft 26 Sedan a semi planning hull?

I just googled the boat and checked out a few pics with the boat on a lift. From what I can tell it looks like its modified V hull type. Some specs say 255HP with a top speed of 24kts, so I'd say it's a semi-planning.
