Really nice review, sold me on the hatchet. Not too concerned with the handle mount issue.. With Hultafors it's al in the blade, with care it should last 150 years, in that time I'd expect to get through a dozen handles! Really sussinct and you've helped me decide on the classic size rather than the larger one.

The head is not a Hudson Bay pattern but typically Scandinavian head, a HB head has no low cheeks or ears. The grain not straight is only important with softer woods, not so critically on hickory or ash. The grain is pretty good for hickory actually. The wedge issue is more or less just esthetics (do not know if this is technically the correct word). It has indeed a better wood-splitting action then the SFA from GB. But splitting is about 80% of the work of the ax.

I agree that the grain orientation is no big deal, but since I am used to picking out and shaping my own handles, I generally prefer perfectly vertical grains for handle longevity reasons. And yes so far, I like this tool very much.

I just got one myself and have the same issue with major imperfections on the top of the axe where the wedge is. Not sure if I should return it because the little round piece that holds in the wedge is way off Center and the side of it is exposed.

Thanks for watching! I have been using this hatchet for 5 weeks now and so far the head seems to be securely attached to the handle even with the wedge being off center. I think Trailtraveler is correct in saying that this is a matter of aesthetics. Still though, for $82 dollars, they should have gotten this little detail right in my opinion.

You can work with a wet handle in an emergency but I wouldn't want to keep it in a damp state for long because 1. it damages the handle over time 2. You risk the chance of slipping.

@@ninjarules2280 Boiled linseed oil seems to be the standard treatment for axe handles. I would apply every day for a week and then wrap the handles with some type of anti slip tape if you desired. I'm not an expert. This is just what I would do with what I know.

hey just thought id drop in to say that ive had this hatchet and the classic felling axe well over a year and having put them trough tasks you should never put an axe trough i have absolutley nothing bad to say exept on the small hatchet i found the shoulder to be quite aggressive when useing the axe for fine woodworking (i dont like wearing gloves so maby that has spmething to do with it) but 5 mins with a swiss atmy knife and some sandpaper and it quickly became one of my prized tools, love this axe and can only reccomend it (i know i sound like a fanboy but as much as i hate to admit it i kinda am)

Who own Hultafors/Hults bruks. all theforges worked together but GB wanted people to buy just their versions because they could charge more because of all the hype and marketing, ie: ray mears. KZbin. Hultafors were not that dear in uUKbut people started to buy them because GB became so expensive, so then they put those prices up,especially in US. But they make axes for other firms like Husqvarna. But do not finish the same. Husqvarna axes are identical to Hultafors and Hults bruks. Hultafors forest axe in UK around£90 to £125. Husqvarna £40-£44. And also have better handles and are fit really well.

Say Heah, I could understand why you like your H B Classic. Last B-Day, even though I didn't nerd to buy my H B 17" Agdor Hatchet, But since it eas on sale on a closeout and my B-Day I bought it. I didn't need it because I have a G B Small Forest Axe, But my 17" Agdor became myFav. Bush Craft Hatchet, because of the weight and it's compact . I now carry it in my Axe Hokster I bought from Eugene. It really goes great with my Rodent 5 which I carry in a leather dangler sheath that matches the leather work on my Agdor and axe holster and my Wicked Tough Saw, It's my Go To Trio.
