I had just bought a Hultafors OK4, a few hours before I watched your video. It's my first fixed blade knife. (I haven't looked beyond my Opinel No9 until now.) I particularly like the way you compared dimensions and weight and blade thickness of the knives. It bought those aspects of the OK4 to life as you handled it and talked about it. Thanks for a great video.

@@nseight It was a 3 year old comment, that I got really fast, on judging the Bushcraft Black. After giving it more months of use, it changed my thoughts on it, and I have to say, It's a really good knife!! One of the best out there ,fire making knife!!

@@greekveteran2715 Thank you for your time to reply :-) I have small hands & I am a beginner , so wondering , would you still recommend the Hultafors OK4 knife ? Sending well wishes from Scotland*

@@nseight For smaller hands, definitely the Hultafors OK4 is a better fit and a great knife. No matter if you are a beginner or more experienced, Hultafors and Mora knives (Morakniv) both are great companies. Just keep in mind, that they come with scandi edges, which means, that they are perfect for wood wittling but they are not good for slicing cut. For excample, you can't peel an apple with a scandi edge. If you are going to carve wood, then the Hultafors OK4 is the best knife for you, if you want a knife, that can also slice and cut, other stuff too, then let me know and I'll tell you, which one is the best. Greetings from Crete Island of Greece!

Great review. I've just ordered an OK4. I have a Mora Companion and a Basic 511. I also have the Hultafors Craftsman knife, all very good. I was looking at the Black but couldn't justify the price. The OK4 makes a lot more sense.
@Zanzubaa7 жыл бұрын
A comparison between Hult OK4 and Mora black a bit unfair. As stated they come in at different price points. I think a comparison against a Mora Companion Heavy Duty would be more fitting. At this time they both come in at about 15 GBP.

Good review, thanks. I was trying to decide between these two knives for a cheapish secondary knife option and have gone with the Hultafors based on your info in this video. They seem to be pretty similar knives so the price point and fire steel loop won me over ;)

Hi Stuart, Could not agree more, Hultafors make good tools but most people have not heard of them... yet! I hope their brand continues to grow. They also make some good affordable axes. ATB Calum

Affordable? Perhaps on your side of the pond. In Canada Hultafors are extremely expensive. I have a Hultafors OK4 & it cost me $45. It's not bad, pretty much just like a basic Mora but a little small my hand. The markings on the blade are gimmicky but overall a fairly decent little whittling knife & another ferro rod is always a bonus. The Bushcraft Black I have is a far superior knife all around. It cost $90 for the basic knife without the ferro rod. Mora companions are about $30 & Companion HD are about $40. Of course sometimes you can find them on sale for &20 & $30 respectively. I also have a Hultafors Classic Hunter axe that cost me $160. The other Hultafors axes I have are not from their classic collection but all cost $80-$110. Maybe these prices are affordable to some people but to me it was a fair amount of hard earned money. They are good quality, I'll give you that. *Note: All above prices were before tax. Shipping & import tariffs extra if ordered out of Canada. Thanks for making the effort to upload this review of these two competitor's knives. Cheers.

I've just ordered an OK4 from your site as my first proper knife. I figured if it's too small in my hand it was only £23 and I get a ferrocerium rod I can use with a bushcraft black and keep the OK as back-up.

The price point of Hultafors is simply amazing. That being said, i like the mora for several reasons. 1. Length of blade, 2. The handle is nice for my larger hand size, 3. The bevel can be polished off using my japanese water stones and leather strop.

The OK4 is the best budget knife by far. My Mora Black was unbelievably dull, and the ergos were abysmal.

Great review ! the hultafors knives are fantastic and imo as good as the mora equivalents, that hurts me to say so as im a huge mora fan and like you use the black as my go to knife.... I feel the price point will be hulfafors ultimate victory over mora unless mora realigns its prices with out compromising quality! Great review again! Best wishes

Owned and used many Mora's but they totally lost me with this 'bushcraft' line of knives. Switched to Hultafors in 2011 and never looked back. I still use my first Hultafors GK and it's still in very good shape.

@Ryan Boswood The stainless version of the HVK is the RFR. The HVK is carbon steel with an orange handle and the RFR is exactly the same but stainless steel with a blue handle. Great knives. It makes perfect sense to pair it with the GK so you have a stainless for your food prep and the GK for the rougher wood work. It's what I do! Both the stainless and the carbon steels Hultafors uses are easy to sharpen in the field, and of course the stainless is more carefree. The handles of the HVK and RFR are the same very strong material as the GK just a bit thinner but to me very comfortable in the hand and that material is very easy to clean. The blades on the HVK and RFR are a bit thinner than the GK but still thicker than the Mora Companion. Also if you want to throw in in different bags, the glove compartment, etc you'll want the stainless one because they are carefree. So yes. I've been using the RFR since 2011 also and totally satisfied with it. There's a big difference between all you need and all you want. All you need for a small camp knife is Hultafors and most of all the GK, HVK and RFR. All you want is an endless list. I founded the Dutch Bushcraft Association in 2011 as a non profit school to teach bushcraft to people with little money so I was looking for that quality budget 'all you need' knife and that's how I came to Hultafors. It's 10 years (and 7 more Bushcraft Associations in different countries) later now and used them (and sold them to students and never did I get any complaint), so I still say it's the all you need knife for a small camp knife. One tip I do. I keep the RFR scandi with just a very slight convex by stropping and that keeps it very sharp for the food prep. The GK I keep scandi but with a bit more stropping so just a slightly more convex that keeps it very sharp but a bit stronger for the batoning part.

@Ryan Boswood We all have had cuts or rubbed our knuckles on stuff ;) First of all good luck with your medical condition and for sure bush walking is a great way to help you cure. Not only your physical condition but most of all your mental one. Just take it slow and listen yo your body. There's no shame in tapping out but there is on needing search and rescue all the time. Of course it's good to have a full medical kit if you know how to use it, but they are expensive. Usually it's disinfect, cover up to keep it clean and get the hell home to get medical intention if needed. I'm not at all saying having an expensive medical kit is no good but don't let it prevent you to get out there if you can't afford it right now. I don't know where you live but I like the machete. The Silky is a pull saw. Very effective but also likely to break if you make a mistake. The Lapplander is a pull and push saw and way more forgiven to mistakes. You already have a hatchet. Depending on where you live why not give a machete a chance? I have many of both but the machete I use is a not even $20usd dollar Tramontina 12" blade with wooden handle including the Ontario canvas sheath. My 'all you need' setup when it comes to cutting tools is a SAK 'Farmer', the Hultafors GK (or RFR) and that Tramontina machete and that's some $60usd combined. The rest I have is what I want. For food prep I prefer stainless so you can even replace the GK for the RFR. As a one tool option I would prefer the GK. I do like a lot of other knives, hatchets, machetes, etc. but they are sure not what I need but what I want. I get them on sale so I know I can sell them again for the same amount. You already have a great setup going there. You even have the Terava puukko! Great knife. I never let my purchases get in the way of my travel money. Because in the end it's the experience you remember and not the tool. Enjoy life out there!

Great review! I've just done a similar video! And my thoughts were in agreement with your findings! Both great knives, the Hultafors to my mind wasn't as sharp out of the box as the Mora, but definitely wins on price point and the sheath! Just subscribed to you mate! Great job! Best wishes friend

I have both and like them very much, I could not pick one against the other, one has this and the other that, but both are superb. The only difference is price, and if you are on a lower budget you can easily buy de OK4 plus the Hultafors GK (HD) for about the same money as a Bushcraft Black. Actually I recently bought a GK only for batoning... so I have 2 options for bushcrafting and general use, the GK for batoning and rough stuff, and the classic Opinel (inox) for food prep... (and besides I always carry 1 or 2 swiss army knives as back-up)

Hultafors is what Mora used to be. Nowdays you pay for Dave Canterbury and thier entire global marketing machine if you step outside the "craftsline" type of knives. They quadrupled prices and added little but some color to thier knives. They completely lost the product focus which made them great once and decided to focus on profiting of the social media hype instead.
@christianolani16107 жыл бұрын
Well, the moras are made in Sweden with European steel and the hultafors doesn't say where they make their knifes witch probably means China. That makes a difference in price point as well... Just saying:-)
@TheKimjoh5607 жыл бұрын
Hultafors knives are made from Japanese steel in china which keeps prices down , Moras are made from swedish steel (produced in Sandviken, not far from Mora) which keeps the prices down. Here in sweden Moras (craftline) are often cheaper than Hultafors. But globally I imagine Moras are more expensive because of the logistics involved. But when you step outside of the "craftline" of knives you begin to realize that Moras arent that much bang for your buck anymore. This changed when Mora decided to cash in on thier reputuation and focused more on marketing than the actual product. Just compare an older Erik Frost or Andersson Moraknife to what is available today.

Im glad you didn't call it a flat grind because an actual flat grind has a micro bevel as the cutting edge, while the scandi does not.
