His body language during this number is also incredible. He perfectly conveys how nervous Charles is while trying to remember the words. I love the parts of this show that seem to be added just so that Steve Martin can be the hilarious and original comedian he is. In the first season where he's in the wheelchair drugged out of his mind and imagines he gets up and makes a long meaningful speech to Jan, only to realize he's mumbling gibberish and everyone's looking at him like he's crazy. Then the white room incidents. President McKinley the fish. And this song.

I don't think this OMITB episode gets enough credit - it's one of the most well-crafted episodes you're ever likely to see. Here, you have a Broadway-worthy song, delivered in a perfectly-acted performance by Steve Martin (where he nails the number but still manages to convey the awkwardness of someone deeply unsure of his ability to pull it off). Later, you have Meryl Streep's increasingly impassioned performance on stage serving double duty in conveying both her nanny character's feelings as well as Loretta's own personal pain, with the music precisely synced to what's happening off-stage. The talent on this show - both on-camera and behind the scenes - is pretty much unmatched on any other series currently in production.

This show is so good cuz they just let the talent cook. So many shows try to do too much, this show really puts it in the hands of the actors
