The 130,000-acre Moose Wildfire near Salmon, Idaho, was caused by a careless camper who left a campfire unattended next to the Salmon River. Sparks from the campfire ignited the Moose Wildfire on July 17, 2022, and it spread into the Moose Creek drainage in the Salmon-Challis National Forest. It burned for 4.5 months, costing taxpayers $100 million to suppress.
Ranchers Jay and Chyenne Smith tell their story about how the Moose Wildfire affected their summer range operations. The fire became so big, so fast it was impossible for them to remove their Angus cattle quickly. Instead, half of their cattle herd got trapped inside the fire zone for 4.5 months, causing a great deal of stress and leaving them feeling "helpless."
