Human powered washing machine made with Maytag tub and gears being powered by pedals connected to 16" bike wheel for a pulley. Belt turns 90degrees off axis to mate drum pulley to pedal pulley.

I think things like this are a good idea it's saves on electricity and gives you excercise and probably good for the environment, I hope to see more things like this it seems neat.

Can you please show us how you did this? And how did you get the forward/backward pedalling to transform into a back and forth spin? Thank you.

Hi Neil, Can you please provide an explanation as to how pedaling backwards makes the washing machine agitate, and then forward spin?

Would this work if I attached the pulley mechanism to wind or water power? Trying to remove electricity without losing some of the convenience.

Using belt to switch the angle of rotation - smart! I'm considering a large volume centrifuge (as you can only find ones for labs and very small volume ... and very very expensive), to use as a separator of fluid and pollutant of different densities. Driving it with pedals seems very convenient, it's just that the centrifuge wheel must be horizontal (and far away so that it doesn't hit me in the face or knees, when fully rotating :)). Your machine seems very similar to what I need.

There is a way to pedal forward and still be able to agitate and do the spin cycle all without having to pedal backwards. I can't imagine myself pedaling backwards for a good ten to eighteen minutes for the agitation cycle only to finally pedal forward for five minutes for the spin and drain cycle. Since on a two gear system the second gear spins at the opposite direction to gear #1 therefore to make possible pedaling toward for agitation and also pedaling forward for spin, I would add a third gear to the middle between gear #1 and gear #2 and this new gear would be placed there on demand with some lever mechanisms where the driver can reach the handle and slide it which would by the use of springs with the gear #1 and gear #2 slightly moving apart from each other breaking their direct contact, a new gear #3 is placed in between all of the sudden causing gear #1 and gear #2 to spin in the same direction. The end result is that the driver can now pedal forward for 15 minutes to agitate (much comfortable) and then pull a lever to introduce the new gear in between the first and second gear to spin also while pedaling forward. Also you can increase the RPM of the spin cycle dramatically by adding a speed changer, for example, the crank can just be a 56 tooth while the wheel sprocket can have about 5 speed selection ranging from 40 tooth (slower but more torque and easier) and 11 tooth (faster, less torque, harder) and you can experiment with 56:11 ratio for a much faster spin cycle, just that I would recommend pedaling standing to add extra force and you will need to add some support to be able to pedal standing. Overall, great project! Incorporating fitness exercise while doing laundry.

Jesus Christ dude! just get an old ride on lawn mower and take the forward and reverse from it and use that. LOL. make sure to use an older model. the new ones use a hydraulic type transmission instead of a mechanical type.

Great advice. Can you show the schematics of this new design? I need a materials list and instructions. I really want one of these and my requirements is that the bucket is upright....(don't know the part I need for this) and forward peddling action. Definitely in the more upright position as you suggest. Can you help me?

I've watched this video about 10 times. I love their ideas and have incorporated some for myself. Living in LA or San Diego allows one to grow all year without fear of killing frost. Washington is a different story. Sure would love to buy sonora wheat at a good price and you are very right on about GMO wheat. I like your style. Less is more and there is a great satisfaction in knowing how to do things for yourself, because who knows?

so good sr...why not to use a (gear box) shifter to use the pedals all ways on front side. and change to reverse to do the rest of the cicle.

Maybe you could figure out how to have a forward and reverse setting so you can pedal forward the entire time. Perhaps this could be achieved by flipping the drive gear or belt over to achieve this?

You should do that with a kenmore washer and see how it agitate
@OKflyboy10 жыл бұрын
Very clever! Is it really as intuitive as it seems? For example, on the original washer did the motor spin forward for rinse and backward for agitate? Or was that some clever gearing on your part not visible in the video?

Yes all they did was connect the pedals
@TheSunergizer13 жыл бұрын
Good job. But you're peddling backwards and not getting full strength with your legs. Also, your leg should be pretty much straight when extended. It's like a cylinder only doing a half stroke. Still, love the concept.

@doktorandom Maybe you can add a gear shifter? One that allows you to shift between agitation and spin cycle with forward pedaling both ways. It really is much stronger..

Great concept but just like other people said it wouldn't be a whole lot of fun to pedal backwards basically for the entire wash cycle all the time plus you need a lot more water in there man and why is your water so black when you have whites in there to be washed?
