For the first time ever. Human-sheep hybrids have been created by scientists.
Why- to enable continued research into growing human organs in farmyard animals and to help progress towards a cure for diabetes.
A team from Stanford University managed to successfully grow embryos inside a surrogate mother for three weeks which had both sheep and human cells.
This is unbelievable.
This could lead to an unlimited supply of human organs for transplants as in no more waiting lists ever and curing type 1 diabetes.
Now the next stage is to implant human stem cells into sheep embryos which have been genetically modified so that they can't grow a pancreas and the hope is that the human DNA will provide the missing information so that a human pancreas is produced in the sheep instead.
The team had to stop the experiment after 3 weeks due to limits on how long hybrid species embryos can be allowed to survive for.
They are applying for permission from the regulators to extend the experiment to 70 days to see if the human cells in the sheep embryo can actually create an organ.
Dr Hiro Nakuachi who is leading the research said that organs grown in animals will be available for transplant in the next 5 - 10 years.
They have already created a mouse pancreas in a rat then transplanted it to a diabetic mouse and cured it with almost no immunosuppressants
Human-sheep however is more difficult to crack.
This is more efficient that the attempts at the human-pig hybrids where 40-50 eggs into pig surrogates only produces about 14 piglets using sheep. 3-4 sheep embryos leads to the development of up to 3 foetuses.
Also sheep organs are similar in size to human organs
This is a big step forward and and exciting prospect in the world or organ transplants.
