Another tip also in making the release humane is to try and move them in mild weather not freezing cold weather. When you release them leave them some energy food like nuts. They will need it. Ideally release them in a forest or field.

Totally humane solution that works to deter mice and rats from entering... peppermint & cinnamon oil but has to be the right variety. This one works great and available on Amazon. Lazy Cat Rodent Repellent

I bought this and no instructions came with it. I cannot figure out how to get it set. The doors seem to be stuck open.

Hmmm that's weird. It should be a one-way door. They can walk in, but can't walk out again. Did you buy the same one that I used in the video?

If you release them near your house they will come back, they should be two miles away. She probably caught the same mice over again. They can find food if in the right environment for them.
