I have been married to my wife for nearly 20 years. We have six children. Quite frankly, we were never able to "afford it" by the definitions westerners use to justify having children. But we did. I live with constant anxiety about the future. I have absolutely no faith in any governments, institutions or churches here or around the world. They are all complicit in this malaise. More and more, I feel like we are on our own. Like so many of us, my ancestors were homesteaders. They knew how to survive with much less (and still have children). We now live as the human equivalent of declawed housecats. That is what this era has done to us. We have maintained little to none of the knowledge needed to survive outside of this house of cards. I resent this modern life while being grateful for the things it has provided me. I am dependant on it. I also do not think there was anything glamorous about how earlier generations lived. They were simply surviving. I do not feel prepared for the future. I am not confident that we are ready for what's coming next.

I have friends who have 1-2 kids and would decide to have more but they simply cannot afford it. One income family is almost impossible now, women have to work as well and they cannot afford to buy bigger place to live (families live in small apartamentach and pay the interest of morgage for 25-30 years), not to mention daycare or being able to afford decent, healthy food. This is being done under a political party that built its reputation on being for the common, working class mind you, and they can't throw those people under the bus quick enough. People who have nothing but contempt for human life and innocence are working in law enforcement, healthcare and the judiciaries. The rich are getting richer. This small sample of the lyrics is so prophetic and sums up where we are now. "What is going to happen when the cities we built turn to sand. I will try to undertand that some of us still love this land. But is the game played out? Did the bubble burst? And if the race is won, who got there first? I can't live in this crazy place, no no. It's crazy to me how people accept being taxed to death when it used to cause revolutions. Inflation is another hidden tax to destroy wealth people accumulate, make people debt slaves and easy to control. I think they could increase tax to 90% and people would just go with it. Humanity is on its last leg because they refuse to do anything about it, that's the sad reality.

I have 4 children myself. The society as a whole must be more accepting and helpful for people with small children. I have friends that have one child and barely keeps it together. In my family my parents are very individualistic and doesn’t help me and my wife. They say that having children is my choice and my responsibility. They want to continue their lives free. Sad that they don’t understand that they will need help when they grow old. I am not motivated to help them since they let me and my wife handle our situation alone. When I become a grandparent I will support my children with their families.

Agree.....sadly.....got married later in life....had 2 miscarriages and a full term stillbirth. Worked and went to school most of my life....self-supporting since age 20, with rare exception, until i married at age 36. Major wage earner first 17 years of our marriage.....wirked a lot of exhausting night shifts, a lot of overtime....could not afford the thousands of dollars to adopt.....so no children. Was researching the percentage of adults to children here in America recently - 230+ million adults/18 and older.....leaving about 100 million Americans under age 18..... Adults are 2/3 of our population.....that is staggering to consider..... Yet we still have children being abused, homeless, kidnapped, murdered, trafficked....treated poorly, taken for granted.....how can this be? Lord come quickly!!!!

This a symptom of a failed society. Our ancestors traversed the globe in the hopes of building a future for them and their kids, with real freedom to do so and look how we flourished. Fast forward few hundred years and we're essentially living in an open air human zoo/prison. We punish anyone who's truly different, we shut down any who thinks outside of the box, we demonise creativity and passion. The kids born through the tech generation are the most overwhelmed, confused and dismayed humans in existence and I honestly don't think the damage can be un-done.
@JimJam-x6tКүн бұрын
Pile that on-top of failing economic status of the "west", everything points towards disaster. You can't even hope for a better future anymore because there isn't going to be one, just more of the same, but worse. We're living through the end of the modern "Roman" empire.

As a 25-year old, I can safely say everything that the government is doing is very disheartening to start/create a family; between the increased economy, low wages, and property increase; it is making it difficult to increase the population. The government is trying to mask their plans with increased benefits such as children allowance, free child care etc. (at least in my country) however it is not enough unless you are really family driven....

I agree with you. I've been noticing the absence of babies and young children for several years now. It's scarry. What will come of us? And its not just the lack of having babies, the young people now often can't find a spouse or even friends in real life.
@hh03945-y3 күн бұрын
I'd have another child if: 1. we didn't need both of us working to financially have our home. 2. everyone is getting cancer and autoimmune diseases, so at the time I am having babies, instead of having my parents and parents-in-law help us, we are instead struggling with baby and taking parents to cancer appointments, organizing their funerals and grieving, and going back to work. Where amongst that can I have another baby? 2 parents have died, another given months to live, the other also very ill, I have no time, working and so many medical appointments and grief.

Ecologically speaking, when a species experiences a population explosion, as we have since the industrial revolution, but especially in the last 100 years (2billion in 1920 and to now over 8billion), it then experiences some degree of population crash followed by a rebound and a new equilibirun. The world is changing soo fast, its hard to know what will happen. You say there are unknown problems ahead, but there are also unknown solutions. I also think partly people are having children less because the future is portrayed as gloomy, so emphasing the gloominess because of low birth rates may not necessarily raise them. Personally, I don't want to have continually rising populations, especially if we also want to lift as many people as possible up to Western standards of living, because we are not yet at a point where we can live gently on the Earth.

I'm not losing any sleep thinking about declining birth rates. The population to be concerned about is those in power that cause these endless wars. Those who manipulate money for their own gain. The deep entrenched corruption of private companies that own governments. There are 8 billion people on this planet. A constant increase during my lifetime. Are things better overall today vs. 25 years ago??
@SootyPhoenix3 күн бұрын
Low birth rates are not a problem because we need the world population to increase. They are a problem because the average age of the population is increasing. An old population is an economically/productively unsustainable one. To say the unsayable, people today live too long, on average.

Everyday around 60.000 perople are born in India, humanity is like a pest over the planet, we are far from dissapearing. Now people in rich countries is another story but with the people born by accident in the 3rd world is more than enough.
@brien6563 күн бұрын
In my opion It's the greed of the ones in contol that has done this to western culture,.When people are taught to directly or indirectly to want more than just an average life. When working takes up all the time that earlier was devoted to the Family. When greed takes the place of everything else, this is what you get. They had made having or even wanting to start a Family undesirable because you then can't afford everything that you just need to live and support a family. When did this start? In the 1900s with the industrial revolution. At one time the poor had bigger families. Now the poor/ the lower income people don't. Where do you find it that both parents have to work to have enough and, they because of the costs envolved only have 1 child. some 2 but others none and the relationship usually ends in no more than 5 years.Again, it's the fault of those in power,.they caused this to happen.
