Imagine traveling to Mars in just 45 days!"
NASA, in partnership with the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), has revealed plans for a revolutionary nuclear-powered rocket engine
This groundbreaking engine, the first of its kind in fifty years, aims to be fully operational by 2027."
"Unlike traditional chemical propulsion systems, this cutting-edge technology harnesses the power of nuclear fission reactors, using the energy released by splitting atoms.
Boasting an efficiency three times greater than conventional engines, this nuclear-powered engine could reduce the current seven-month Mars journey to just 45 days!

If a craft could be accelerated to that kind of speed, it would need to decelerate to be able to go into orbit around Mars, thus requiring much more fuel. Lots more research has to go into this to make sure it's viable.

Exactly, because it’s all nice and all to have these ideas theories and inventions but reality still tells you “unless you’re able to understand my rules” we’ll remain where we are. All that build up of energy where you sending that as you decelerate because natures way of stopping you is immediate dissipation of energy splat and we dead. I think the main problem of space travel isn’t can you get that fast because we could theoretically in many ways it’s more so after all that build up of mass or energy where do you transfer that as you decelerate whilst keeping account for the many variables that could influence your deceleration because you know reality will keep on moving it won’t stop to let us stop safely
@OYeahan
@OYeahan 3 ай бұрын
You could use Martian atmosphere to either first declerare to orbital speed or just enter atmosphere directly. That would of course make the transfer not-heat-protected part of the ship disposable, and would require another ship e.g. send earlier using conventional trajectory waiting on orbit and/or ground.

Statement on NASA website: "NASA will work with our long-term partner, DARPA, to develop and demonstrate advanced nuclear thermal propulsion technology as soon as 2027" This is very different from being fully operational by 2027. Also the design proposed by NASA is to get to Mars in about 100 days. The 45 days referred to here is in relation to proposed engine design by Ryan Gosse. The 2027 timeline is unlikely to be met due to ambitious timescales.

Didnt elon swear nuclear powered rockets would never ever ever be a thing? Because of the basic laws of conservation of momentum? There is nothing to push against in space, so you must react against yourself. By moving a small mass very fast to move a large mass very slow. Momentum is conserved.

This is an old system that was created in the 1950s, just like the propulsion system that is used in ships and submarines. If you actually look into the nuclear power for a spaceship, you only need a thin lead shield to protect the people from the radiation produced by the nuclear engine as it produces the power to drive the spaceship between the earth and other planets.

They need to meet like two relay racers to exchange a baton. The initial trajectory would be similar to a foot ball receiver at the line of scrimmage. The ball and receiver doing very similar speeds, but the ball is arced high. The target of the space craft isn't landing on the surface directly, any excess speed would need to hit orbit first, then decelerate to fall out of orbit. It would be similar to their landings on earth by then.

@@michaelkruk3415 Thrust that can be kept up for months at a time. The failed Shuttle could go maybe 12 minutes total. You are talking about ion drives we have put on a few planetary probes. I'm talking about GigaWatt ION drives that would have 1000's of lbs of thrust. Not much good for getting off the planet but has much more delta V than chemical rockets for the same mass of propellent. The high ISP allows you to accelerate half way to Mars, turn around, then decelerate until you enter orbit. It would take a few weeks to get there and you wouldn't have to rely on a dangerous, one chance atmospheric entry to slow you down.

To go to mars, you should do like a wagon train. Some rockets arrive before and orbit mars and drop supplies before the manned craft arrives. Some orbiters will have fuel for a return trip and some will drop relaunch supplies from the surface to the return ship. And then regularly send more ships to keep the mars occupants supplied. Don’t send just one rocket, that’s suicide.
