In a world of giant insects, a praying mantis works in pest control--controlling humans, that is. With the help of her beleaguered tarantula assistant, of course. A sci-fi cartoon series about big bugs and the world of bizarre biology that they inhabit.

Everyone experiences life differently. You never need to feel bad for the feelings you experience. The only control you have is the actions you take based on those feelings. It is our job as thinking creatures to challenge our actions, not our feelings. Our feelings come to us, and our actions are what we choose to do about it. Keep this in mind so you may never succumb to guilt by what your body presents to you, but instead you may learn and grow and improve in a realistic manner.

I'm a bit late to this, but I came across the idea that manti use their big eyes for just motion tracking and have three color sensors in between their compound eyes. I just noticed Soph has them, which of course she would and it's a nice detail, but it really adds to the feeling that all of this is really well researched.
@HumansBGone
@HumansBGone Жыл бұрын
Mantises have color receptors (blue, green, and ultraviolet) in all their eyes, the three center eyes (ocelli) are used to orient during flight! This is reflected in the ocelli being lost in insects that have lost flight, like worker ants--breeding ants, which do fly, still have them. In American cockroaches, which fly very little, there are only two very reduced ocelli. In fact, Professor Gregorsa's "glasses" are actually his ocelli!

Just found this series for the first time. Aside from the cool bug facts, I'm really intrigued by the connection between our world and the fictional one. The latin for "protocule" is innocuous enough, probably roughly meaning "small ancestor," but "macrovolute" and "demivolute" are both kinda strange. "Volute," from what I can tell, means roughly "to turn." Would that imply these terms translate to "turned big" and "half-turned" respectively? That might explain why two very different phenomena are both referred to as demivolutes at the same time; arthropods that didn't gain intelligence and vertebrates that morphed to look very different would both be changed, just not in the way macrovolutes were. Perhaps there was some event that changed creatures very quickly? Despite this, it doesn't seem Gregosa is somehow speaking to the native humans of his world. He references large differences that these humans are supposedly already aware of, even so far as basic physics being different. Assuming these talks are diagetic, which they seem to be, it implies that there might've been some sort of first contact between worlds? I'd be excited to see whether the story potentially continues far enough for us to see this first contact. There are also a number of oddities surrounding our supposed "humans." I've noticed that they are all female, somewhat like many ant or bee colonies. The stronger human could be a different caste in this system. Perhaps the "demivolute" Gregosa mentions us having already seen is referring to this? Maybe the humans are demivolutes, and not true humans. Gregosa mentions our ancient reliance on fire, implying perhaps that these demivolute humans were once normal humans much like us before whatever mutagenic event happened. These are just some of my theories on what might be going on. Without Gregosa addressing who his audience might be, it'd be pretty impossible for us to know any of this yet. Just wanted to contribute what lore tidbits I noticed, myself. Overall, I hope to see this series continue.
@lonewasp
@lonewasp Жыл бұрын
I honestly thought that this simply doesn't take place on Earth at all, and that the reason we only see militant humans is because humans were never from this world, but rather became a spacefaring species and came to this planet in an attempt to explore/colonize it. It'd also explain the booze line, how they have advanced weapons and armor despite the lack of human infrastructure around, and how there are so many of them even though we've only seen females. Maybe I'm missing something? But this seems like the most logical explanation for humans, to me.
@William_Bryant
@William_Bryant Жыл бұрын
Personally, I see the derivative "-volute" following the same word use as "e-volve" rather than "re-volve". They are "Great evolved" macrovolutes, and "less greatly evolved" demivolutes.
@КрасныйОрёл-л9х
@КрасныйОрёл-л9х Жыл бұрын
I've always assumed Gregosa to breaking 4th wall. Concerning in-universe humans, they don't look to have technology space-faring humans would have. Such as space suits. Tbh, i find it strange that these humans apted to become parasitic, instead of negotiate to have a small corner to live in and not touch macrovolutes homes. If we could negotiate with insects so they sit somwhere not near us and maintained somewhat constant population, we would do that. Then again, formicosa seems to be totalitarian/authoritarian dictatorship, so maybe ant queens just don't want tp negotiate.

@@КрасныйОрёл-л9х I mean, can the humans even communicate with the Macrovolutes? They communicate primarily through smell, while we use sound. Plus, since our kind of technology is difficult to make and doesn't last long there, we wouldn't be able to reliably make any sort of translation device through means we are familiar with.

Love the series so far and where it is going. If I may be so bold, it could be cool to see a Sophodra tips or a new little series like Sophodra's examinations about humans. It would be interesting what to see what she gets right while also seeing what theories are wrong but still humorous. Especially finding a human settlement at rest. Finding things like an amphitheater or wearing different colored clothing or even finding work shops developing's weapons and tools or some form of farms would be fascinating to her i'm sure. Could be a simple little side series in-between the main series.

One thing to add to that idea that I think you would find humorous. Perhaps in one of her attempts to examine or get closer to humans either via removal or research, she knows that they can't see ved so she covers herself in a ved paint or something to try and get closer and not disturb them. However even though she's wearing a color we can't see, she blocks out light since she's still an giant object so it just comes off as a big black shadow of doom which is even more terrifying looking.

Fun fact: Human music is hypothesized to be related to how we walk as bipedal creatures, and to our ancient hypothesized hunting strategy. Rhythm emerges from synchronizing our footsteps and breathing when on the move allowing our brains to scan our soundscape for things that dont belong (such as a snapping twig) during the instnaces when we arent creating noise with our gait. From this rhythm emerges the phenomenon we understand to be music. So it would make sense that weevils music focuses on emphasizing a different behavior as weevils arent social creatures as I understand them? Their music would come from a different origin from ours. Not to mention that it cant actually hear, so their music is probably more like an opera recording?

Also, after looking up that weevil monument, I find it very funny that the weevil wasn't there until 30 years later when a guy went "hey shouldn't our weevil monument *have* a weevil on it" and made one and put it on there. And I return here once more with a new found appreciation of the series, a stronger grasp on the setting and themes and a desire to hope it goes well and continues to improve as this new semester starts :) Edit: 17 points. Edit 2: I've only recently become aware that episode 6 technically counts semester 2, so: 26 for that.

I’d like to think I’m personally responsible for at least amplifying some nonpiece of the broader algorithmic boost your channel has if-only specifically across the last 3-4 days when I stumbled into your show by chance. I’m always something of an obsessive when it comes to hunting small channels in general. I introduced your series to 4chan’s cartoons board some days back with a small thread, didn’t especily last long but I thing they/we generally came out of it feeling broadly receptive to what had been made so far with a good appetite/curiosity for the knowing more of the setting you’ve laid out. Congratulations on the breaking of ground by the way it must be a giddy feeling to see your long-languishing channel blow up to near double(?)size practically overnight. I mean that reactor-guy from 4 weeks back mentioned this place had some 5000 subs if I’m remembering right at the time of his uploading.

And while I’m here I might as well make a go at a lore question and well, being bold actually make something of an OOC loreside suggestion if the answer does amount to ‘yes’ on what I’m about to ask or at least ‘yes’ insofar as it applying to microbes: So there’s evidently Macrovolute versions of the plant and fungal life to but what if anything is there that is different about microbriel life? Are there square-cube upsized bacteria swimming around in Macrovolute biomass? Are cell matter structures upscaled in the same ways? Obviously Macrovolutes are not literally ‘only’ a magnified bug since they’re thinking complex thoughts but how far down does their conquest of cube law go? ‘If’ physics defying free roaming microbial life were a thing in their world after a cube-law upscaling I suspect that blind microbre flailing would be liable to tear it’s ways through a great deal of non-square cube blessed material like a chainsaw through wood. That would lend a touch more credence to your established rule about technology degrading so rapidly. Now obviously this line of questioning around what is what with cube-law has to have it’s buck stop somewhere and god forbid you and your team have to bullshit up a whole damn fantasy physics table of interactions about the minutia of interactions around say magnified protons rubbing into normal electrons and gravity values and blah-de-blah, that’s obviously not where this show is headed. If this stuff will never come up in the show then it is a can of worms that doesn’t deserve to be opened after all.

Thank you for the 4chan boost, I'm sure that did help! Yeah, it's been amazing watching the channel take off lately!!! There's no team usually, apart from music (this coming episode is an exception--I've actually hired some concept and modeling help!), just me. There are giant demivolute versions of some microbes, yes (only insects and arachnids are thinking macrovolutes!). Mostly these are still animals, but there are some other eukaryotes, and even some bacteria! They get huge, and many can move through air as though through water. The properties of the Unknown Nature affect different beings differently, and the particulars of its mechanics are still unknown even to macrovolutes (thus the name). Molecules themselves cannot be upscaled, but their function is supplemented or mimicked, either by more molecules, a property of the Unknown Nature that creates an amplification of molecular forces, or a third thing that I can't spoil just yet! (It is safe to say that a single-celled organism is very different in internal mechanics as a demivolute vs. its protocule form, however!) Very few of these demivolute microbes live inside macrovolutes, however. It would be a disaster if they did, especially since some get bigger than macrovolutes! No, macrovolute microbiomes consist of protocule microbes, just a whole lot of them.

@@HumansBGone This is much more of a serious answer then I’d ever expected to hear, coving such an obscure bases as that alone is something of a feat in foresight. if that is all to be said on the matter mI’m completly satisfied, to know you’ve actually actually had some of this in mind. You’ve any standouts ideas rattling in your head around what some Macrovolute engineers have been able to make for themselves by leveraging some particularly fun features of ahem, *demivolute* bacteria. (Gotta keep my terminology in better track) From how you’ve decisively laid out that there are not giant cells inside everyone’s bodies and that everyone has Protocule bacteria I venture to assume Protocute microbes amusingly would also be dwelling inside their Demi upscaled cousins to yes? Or at least just the ones you allude to as being equal or larger in scale to the Macrovolutes themselves.
@HumansBGone
@HumansBGone Жыл бұрын
@@joshuamitchell5018 Sadly, macrovolute engineers have not yet had success trying to transfer the Unknown Nature's properties to other things. Beyond that, flight isn't really an issue, since most insects can fly. There are probably other engineering uses for giant microbes, of course, but I haven't yet put that much thought into them! Primarily, aeroplankton are just significant as food, and sometimes pets. And yes, demivolute microbes certainly get infested with protocule microbes!

So basically, the story (so far) from my understanding is that Earth was devastated in some kind of catastrophic event t that led to the creation of the huge plant that the Macrovolutes live in. Due to some unknown force, most likely space radiation or something more (probably also what deformed that cow and why the humans have to wear suits despite there being oxygen), they evolved rapidly to be larger and smarter, developing a common “language” and figuring out how to use tools, agriculture, program complex systems, etc. There is a class system in place, but was previously said to be made quite recently, thanks to the ants. Speaking of whom, the only surviving species of ant we are told about is the -Yellow- -crazy- ants, perhaps they had some massive civil war that exterminated or drove away the other ants, leading to these ants being in charge of the rest of the population. As for the humans, they seemed to have recovered from whatever disaster probably eradicated a lot of us, and are now trying to either “take the world back” or “scavenge what they can find” now. My theory as to why all the females seem to be in charge is maybe something like Women being seen as sacred like in ancient times predating civilization, since they are able to bear children, which would be seen as helpful after the apocalypse. Only time will tell, either way I like both sides of the story here, the humans in their own Lord of the Flies (there’s a joke there) society while the Macrovolutes in a kind of 1984 situation with the Ants acting as Big Brother and making all of the decisions while using the Flies to survey the land they have control over as the Lords of the Flies (told you so) I’m excited to see where this goes, I had pretty mixed expectations going into this but now I’m pretty confident about the impeccable quality presented here.

While I haven't read the book (nor do I have the time to), this reminds me of the speculative evolution book, Children of Time (which is actually part of a trilogy). In that book, it takes place in the future that shows both the downfall of humanity and the unexpected rise of of spiders where due to circumstances involving a scientific experiment among other things, they ended up on another planet and evolved into an intelligent race. It describes the spiders' society and how they evolved in great detail and made them as realistic to actual spiders as possible, even if things have changed for them. What's really cool is that when they gained sentience and intelligence, they didn't become similar to humans like in other stories, they still acted like spiders, they're just smarter and more sentient, so they're still pretty alien to us and the humans in the story. I also like that by the end of the first book, after the two species met for the first time and inevitably fought each other, they made peace and lived together.
