José Mujica, nicknamed Pepe Mujica, was President of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015. A former Tupamaros freedom fighter in the 60s and the 70s, he was detained, like a hostage by the dictatorship between 1973 and 1985. He advocates a philosophy of life focused on sobriety: learn to live with what is necessary and fairest.

WOMAN, Yann Arthus-Bertrand's next movie
Following in the footsteps of his previous film, HUMAN, Yann Arthus-Bertrand is now dedicating his next full-length feature film, WOMAN, to women. This documentary featuring thousands of voices and unique life stories narrated by women, gives us an insight into their lives, and reveals the progress made towards emancipation but also demonstrates how much remains to be done. With this new film, Yann Arthus-Bertrand seeks to speak out against the injustices suffered by women across the world. But above all, in this world devised, built and dominated by men where the future is uncertain, the goal of WOMAN is to offer an alternative view. That of women.
HUMAN exhibition !
Come and discover an exclusive 8 hours film exhibition at the GoodPlanet Foundation - Domaine de Longchamp, Paris.
Unprecedented installations offering unique testimonies of love, happiness, but also hatred and violence, which confront us with the Other and bring us back to our own lives.

"When I buy something, when you buy something, you're not paying money for it. You're paying with the hours of life you had to spend earning that money. The difference is that life is one thing money can't buy. Life only gets shorter. And it's pitiful to waste one's life and freedom that way." ~José Mujica

Meanwhile, he goes around the world giving speeches while the people pays his salary as Senator earning in one day two months pay of a regular tax payer worker....and he dares teach about life wasting? On buildings, he said $ 4,401,000 (US $ 194,760). He said he has all his farm Rincon del Cerro valued at $ 3,861,000 and also owns 50% two marital patterns totaling $ 540,000. In said two cars vehicles totaling $ 107,500. And he said "other assets", three tractors and other farm implements the figure totaling $ 429,000. Do you think it was not richer?

Did you have strong corrupted criminal opposition? Why his ideas didn't work? Why people hadn't kept him in power? Did large corporations overthrow him? Did other capitalist countries sabotage him? I am sorry that your country had to be kind of experiment, but That's very important for the future, at least one president broke the ice. I am certain that this slavery corporate system will be ended soon, like feudalism, or any other social period in history... or the mother nature will defend itself and blast us all.. But Mujica is fenomen, and we have to support that kind of leaders, so I am very interested, for I am living in Serbia...I have lived in 4 countries as my homeland was falling apart by bloody war, we overthrow one dictatorship just to foll in another, chaotic fascistic unscrupulous political terror in every sense, economical, human rights vise...corrupted media vise.. we are not in better position than you are.

He gets a 1000 USD pension a month for having been a president. An average Uruguayan makes 500 having to pay 350-400 for rent. @Turboman-kx7cc
@Turboman-kx7cc 5 жыл бұрын
SMUG well doesn’t wisdom come from knowledge though? 🤨 I get it also comes from experience and good judgment but all knowledge still applies to wisdom. But nevertheless the wisest men are those who can acknowledge that they don’t know everything, it’s impossible to know everything and not everything has been considered yet when it comes to new ideas by the ppl in charge. Forgive me but I’m going to get off topic and add something in this comment, they know that we can have a better governmental system but they keep it like this bcuz it suits the ppl in charge of everything for now. I refuse to believe that they don’t have any other better system that we do now. I don’t know everything but we won’t be able to find better answers for how we can live better lives, if no one asks any questions and suggests any new ideas that can work better then the government we have now, nothing will ever change. It just seems like everyone is ignorant and doesn’t care wether there is a solution or not. So in this sense not everyone is wise but those who are wise care little, if they can or cannot make a difference in this world. Perhaps they know something that none of the average ppl are aware of. I’m trying to figure out what that might be but in the mean time I’m here in this world. Nothing is ever going to progress if ppl don’t care. 🤷🏻‍♂️ there isn’t a government out there that is perfect. Truth is the ppl will never have the power, it’s why there lives have always been ran by certain powerful figures in this world. All I can think of is that the ppl don’t want it bcuz the responsibility is too much to bare on their shoulders. Ppl who are wise can at least understand that the ppl will never have the power, only the mere illusion of it. In conclusion, no amount of wisdom can make a difference in this world. When everyone is oblivious to the situation they are in right now. Only thing wisdom can do for the ppl is just make them more aware of how there lives are being run by corrupt politicians that overstep in using their powers and keep the ppl stupid. They even tampered with school systems that’s kind of rigged to keep ppl poor. It can teach you a few things but only things that they allow you to learn. You can learn about other stuff on your spare time but not everyone ever does, only a few ppl. It’s true, school committee’s can also be corrupt. Why do you think ppl are dealing with sjw’s and crazy feminazis in public or internet. They weren’t taught properly and the gov’t is up to no good for the ppl at least. Wisdom can only help with a few things in this world that we live in but having a wise president won’t make much of a difference. We simply just don’t know, at least not yet or perhaps never. Only time will tell. I just fear I won’t be around to witness it, if that day truly comes where the world is a better place for everyone.

+Gabriel Zang In On one hand he does not say he was in prision for nothing. He wanted to change the society by a revolution, as a lot of people in that moment. Now he accepts he was wrong and he plays the democratic game as everyone. On the other hand, you just lie if you say he is rich because he has a "brand new Mitshubishi Lancer" (maybe you dont know that is a normal car in the rest of the world). He is not "poor", he is a middle class farmer; if you listen, he does not say to live without nothing; just to have what is usefull and not innecesary things. Finally, in respect of the meat, if you export as Uruguay does, the Uruguayan customer will pay international prices, because beef is expensive everywhere (if you do not like that, you have to do like Argentina, where is almost imposible to export meat, but the producers are not very happy when they recive just half of the international price). It is shameful your criticism for the only worldwide well known uruguayan that really deserve respect.

I'm sure that this man has a lot more to share than just what he said in these 10 minutes. The part of this I remember most is when he talked about money and life, and the fact that money is just the hours that we spent working, and time will never come back, no matter how much money we make. That was one of the most thought-provoking things I have ever heard. We can all learn something from him. Thank you, Mr. Mujica.

+Hamish Ferguson People, don't fool yourselves! As a Uruguayan I can tell you first hand that this man is nothing but talk, he sunk us in the worst debt our country has ever had in history (speaking about wanting more and spending more), buying a quality portion of meat in a meat producing country as we are is a luxury just a few can afford, we struggle to survive in such a way that the Syrian refugees who reached our country are FLEEING because of the prices and insecurity. This man was in prison for kidnapping, cold blood murder, bank robbing, mugging and many other things which had NOTHING TO DO with his political struggle. This man is a criminal. And if you think that he drives that old light blue VW Beetle, I'm sorry to tell you I've seen him and his wife drive past my overpriced 93' Geo Metro sized Suzuki in a brand new and shiny Mitsubishi Lancer EX. This man is a DISGRACE to our country, a traitor to his beliefs, and now, a WORLDWIDE LIAR.

Such traditional virtues dismissed in favour of consumerism but urgently needed if we are to avoid self-destruction and to thrive.

=========================================================== That old crazy man, I still remember when once no more than 15 years ago I began to see wall painted showing: "Pepe" and wondered "Who the fuck is pepe" seemed a joke that a politician was called "Pepe", studied law but in my student days that historical "bump" of the 70 newly beginning to lighten, so do not know much about modern history of our country. Well, that "Pepe" become "El Pepe" a man of flesh and blood, with flaws and virtues with hopes and dreams, without fear of speaking his mind and boy,he had time to think about how to be a better man and as our society could be better. without being miltant on any active political faction, I declare myself as humanist, defender of truth and human progress. This interview is not wasted tme, in a few minutes, the word of a coherent person, costumesless and so direct that any one can understand. For this man and his message of hope. Proud to be Uruguayan! Beyond the funny character, he is a consistent and fearless person that speak his mind, and boy, he had time to think, without being an active militant of any politcian side, i advocate x humanity and understanding. The system deceives us seducing us with items that become desire, but obviously, to acquire them, we pay with money, I wonder if a luxury car or a brand clothing make happiness? I think not. Pepe, chears!

+Nico A "i have a good lvl of english" - Ummm no, actually your English is very poor. If you had a "good level", you would know that English or Spanish (languages, nationalities, etc.) are capitalized. You would also know that the personal pronoun I is always capitalized. You would also know that "its" is a possessive adjective and that "It is" is written "It's" when contracted. You would also know that "is a shit" makes no sense since "shit" is uncountable...you should have said "is shit". Así que no te hagas el crack y basurees la traducción y/o al traductor, porque seguramente hicieron un trabajo mucho mejor que lo que podes llegar a hacer vos. El espíritu de lo que dice Pepe quedo claramente plasmado en la traducción.

As an on and off student of the Spanish language, I can see how the language itself forms the expressions of the speaker. It is a more poetic language than English, thus the finer points cannot be appreciated. In this case, forgive me, I find Mujica's Spanish very, very difficult to understand due to his dialect, so I appreciate the "to the point" English translation. Nevertheless, his body language makes up for what the translation lacks.

Dimitri: I transcripted the first 2:09 of the interview (and went to sleep). It takes some time, but if you are still interested I can continue when I have some time. I also made some comments about his pronuntiation, Soy José Mujica.
