How fabulous was that! When documentaries were made by people who assumed your attention span was longer than a goldfish, you didn't need everything explained to you like a 5 year old, the drama was real and not manufactured and the subjects were genuinely interesting! I was born too late (but thank you KZbin)

What a brilliant film. No hype, no crazy editing, no onslaught of constant voice overs. Just simple and real storytelling.

I spent three years working in a technical role with the RNLI in Ireland. I visited every single lifeboat station in the country. I met hundreds of volunteer crew. I could never understand how these volunteers would get out of their beds in the middle of a winter's night to go out to sea during a storm to rescue complete strangers putting their lives in danger. They are what makes the rnli great and a fantastic organisation.

My step-dad did this after he retired from his position as a ship's pilot. What a brave man, and I miss the hell out of him. These guys are incredible.

How nice this series isn't compared to the modern day crashing and bashing with tense music shots, dramatic camera shots etc.. I love this show

BBC Modern lifeboat series has to be dramatic for modern age, just like the BS Traffic Police, you could drive 200 miles down a motorway and never see a pig anywhere on a weekend

No crying and getting in touch with their emotions either. Just real men doing really tough work with stoic dignity. Great stuff.

I used to watch this with my dad, I remember the bit where they rescue a dinghy with a young man or lad, perhaps someone else and a baby on it.

The Christmas bit reminded me of the Parties I used to go to at my Dad's Fire Station, with his big old Firefighter colleague Alan Pemberton playing the role of Santa. He was great big guy with red cheeks and a booming voice, the perfect fit for the role. Happy Memories.

Thankyou so much for the upload. I told my family about this 1983 series when we were in Easington last Friday. I had initially watched it when it was on TV and my parents with being some of the earliest to get a video recorder, gave me the task of recording it. Being twelve years old at the time meant I was in my prime for being able to set things up; such as videos, new TVs, altering digital watches etc. I recall that even though I was only twelve, I had a big crush on coxswain Brian Bevan with his lovely Yorkshire accent, gorgeous sideburns and his HiViz RNLI coat. He was the real 'hunk of the moment', I smile at it now as I'm 46, but I still think he was quite a looker. Apparently he retired in 2001 having reached the mandatory retirement age of just 55, and he moved to a bungalow in Easington. After a short while, he went back to sea, taking the pilots out to bring the ships into the Humber avoiding the shifting sands. Pilots do that where I live, bringing ships into The Wash, bound for Port Sutton Bridge. In 2008 two of my sons and I were lucky enough to be invited by the pilot for a trip in his boat out to The Wash. It was the most memorable hour or two ever. We were even allowed to drive. My sons were 11 and 14 and they had a drive too. It's a memory they will cherish forever. It started snowing on our trip whilst we were in The Wash and we had a total whitenout which was a little unnerving. Brian Bevan said that although the sea was calling him back, he will always think of himself as a lifeboatman, and so he should as he was so well decorated with his medals from the RNLI and I think he many have received one from QE too.

Thank you so much for uploading this series. It is everything the previous comments say: real, factual, intrinsically exciting and unadorned by unnecessary music. What an amazingly committed crew. Thank you on behalf of all the many lives you had a part in making longer, and all the sons and daughters who were born and family lines that were prolonged as a result.

I've pretty much handled all that in labs late 80's early 90's, its not extremly toxic unless ingested and not treated....this was then, imagine now, 130,000 Police on the beach.

Did anyone notice the WB400 receiver carrier at 1:45:49? This would tell them of an incoming nuclear attack. I never knew the coastguard was hooked up to it, but I suppose it makes sense.

I'm going to see if I can get these from KZbin to put on my computer. I recorded it onto vhs each week which my mother still has, but I no longer have a video player which is a shame. Will try a tube catcher, many thanks for the upload, how did you transfer from a video to a digital file? I have a great video on the building of the cable cars at Matlock bath in Derbyshire which I'd love to see again and to upload. Will buy what I need if I actually know what is what. Thanks in advance

Great series. Episode 4 a bit monotonous devoting the whole program to HM Coastguard control identifying 6 cans of unknown chemical washed up on beach. Essential but not so relevant to the RNLI role. #boredshitless

You probably found it boring because it was covered properly unlike modern fly on the wall series' with their added drama, scripted parts, dramatic music, swearing, and boatmen playing up to the camera- think Deadliest Catch. Try to see series 1 of that before a modern day show and you'll see the same show has got so much worse. Even shows like Thomas the tank engine used to be lovely shows with a story, for children who loved the simplicity. The ones written by rev w awdry and narrated by Ringo or Michael Angelis were great but in later years became all crashing and bashing with a disaster every programme rather than someone missing their train to the hot air balloon show. Everything nowadays is ANGRY or deigned to SHOCK, children's programmes to adults. But shows in the early eighties were great. This got really high ratings for a Sunday tea time. I actually enjoyed the show on the coastguards. It's not all sinking ships like it would be if it were made now.

Know I'm a bit late to this party but (even as someone who grew up pre-Internet) it's fascinating to see how hard it was to track down information which literally took me 30 seconds now. I'm still ambivalent on the overall benefit to sociity of the web, but certainly that incident in the 2020's would be a whole lot easier to deal with. Edited to add - it's sad that a professional bunch like HM Coastguard are but a shell of that service nowadays due to the constant need to 'be more efficient' - if my taxes went to running a coastguard like that I'd be a happy man, instead they go to paying for a PA to some C U Next Tuesday parasite like Rees-Mogg.
