Before Humble Pie, Steve Marriott was with The Small Faces and after he formed Packet of Three. Robert Plant gophered for The Small Faces and was heavily influenced by Marriott. Every genre of music that Steve sang he nailed it.

Steve Marriott lived in Essex near to me and I saw him play two gigs in a local pub The Oliver Twist, Colchester… at one I was invited to dance (wiggle) on stage (a very small stage) with a friend… The packet of three was the trio, a blues master class and the most memorable gigs of my life. 60 mins of pure class not long before Steve sadly died…

The Old Grey Whistle Test was a fantastic BBC institution that introduced many of us to music and artists we’d never have access to at the time. Steve Marriott was well established by this time but the chemistry and love between him and his co-singers (not background, no way) is something quite profound and only captured on TV in a small studio. Extraordinary.

Thank you for reacting to this. When I saw Humble Pie live I was blown away by this song and the entire show. In fact, my first Humble Pie show was almost as great as my first Led Zeppelin show ( 3:54 although Zeppelin is why I am a drummer). Anyway, we enjoyed your reaction greatly, especially Debbie as she is terminally ill and as I take care of her I try to find ways to make her smile and take her mind off of things for a while so thank you so much for making her heart smile today which happens to be the youngest of our 13 grand children, Zelda's, 4th birthday. Steve Marriott was a very influential singer of the '60s and '70s with the Small Faces, Humble Pie, and solo. You might give a listen to Small Faces' "All Or Nothing" or "Tin Soldier" as well as Humble Pie's "30 Days in the Hole." Some bio: Marriott as a kid was one of the first actors to sing the Artful Dodger part in the London stage musical "Oliver."

Vanetta Fields ( lady in the middle) was backup singer for John Farnham from 1986-1995. She lives in Australia and is a vocal coach. Fields was a backing vocalist for touring American and British rock and pop acts of the 1960s and 1970s, as well as working as a session recording vocalist, she worked with artists including Ike & Tina Turner, Pink Floyd, Humble Pie, Barbra Streisand, Elkie Brooks, Neil Diamond, Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, Bob Seger and the Rolling Stones. After emigrating to Australia in 1982, she took up citizenship. She recorded or toured as a backing singer for Australian artists Richard Clapton, Australian Crawl, Cold Chisel, Jimmy Barnes, James Morrison and John Farnham..

I'm a massive fan of Humble Pie. Black Coffee is amazing. It's done with such a great sense of humour and Steve Marriott is one of the best soul singer ever. We are too sensitive today. The Blackberries are solid and I love their sound. Beautiful ladies with beautiful voices. I didn't even register colour back then. I registered talent. They all have it in spades (no pun intended). Ever see KC & the Sunshine Band? Interracial bands were so common no one batted an eye. We love talent and if they had soul. That's all I really cared about.

Steve was a real Cockney Sparrer (sparrow). We were both from Manor Park, London E12. His father Bill and mine were good friends down at the Manor Park Constitutional Club. One of my best weekends ever was when one Saturday we watched West Ham Utd play at home and win in the afternoon and then had tickets for Humble Pie's hometown evening gig at the Bingo Hall in Barking Road just a couple of hundred yards from the stadium. Next day my old man insisted I join him early down at his club, which I did. He knew that Bill Marriot would be bringing Steve to the club for a drink. Home win, fantastic concert and then meet your hero next day. Good memory. He left us too soon sadly, but I will never forget him. Manor Park and the area spawned a number of musical successes. Most notably The Ruskin (Arms) in Manor Park High Road.........nowadays remembered as the pub where Iron Maiden were practically the house band and started their career.

I was in a rock band back in the 70’s. The lead guitar player for our band brought a copy of Humble Pie (Rockin the Fillmore). We all went nuts the minute we heard this band. We immediately learned “Stone Cold Fever” and “I don’t Need No Doctor”, and added them to our play list…..they were big hit’s every time we played them. In our area Humble Pie was unheard of at that time. 👍😎🎸🇨🇦

The Old Grey Whistle Test was a late night music TV show which specialised in musicians who, while popular, never appeared in the Popular record charts or on popular music TV shows shown earlier because they didn't release "popy" singles. Groups like Humble Pie and artists like Meatloaf appeared. The gentleman at the end was the presenter known as "Whispering" Bob Harris because of his calm, downbeat presentation.

Old grey whistle test was one of the premier BBC2 music programs. Fronted by Whispering Bob Harris...for 20plus years everyone went including Bob marley and the Wailers and the sound and performances were always something special. Dont forget Tin soldier with PP Arnold .. a love of his life. Steve Mariot was a singing genius but started out as a child actor ...he played the Artful Dodger in the early movie of Charles Dickens's David Copperfield. Mariot often leaned into the title of the Artful Dodger on stage. How do you like your coffee? ...Strong and💃🏿Black 😎... Just saying and the sisters are singing the same ... Some only look in one direction , others look out wider for whoever catches their eyes 👁️🧠👁️...😉

From Wikipedia…… The Old Grey Whistle Test (sometimes abbreviated to Whistle Test or OGWT) is a British television music show. According to presenter Bob Harris, the programme derived its name from a Tin Pan Alley phrase from years before. When they got the first pressing of a record they would play it to people they called the old greys - doormen in grey suits. Any song the doormen could remember and whistle, having heard it just once or twice, had passed the old grey whistle test. Whistle Test launched on UK’s BBC2 in 1971 - the show focused on albums, rather than chart hits. The series' opening titles theme was an animation of a male figure made up of stars (known as the 'Star Kicker') dancing. The programme's title music, with its harmonica theme, was a track called Stone Fox Chase by a Nashville band, Area Code 615.

In my opinion “I Wonder” off the “Smokin’” album is the best song that they ever recorded. Clem Clemson played his heart out on this song. It didn’t get radio time but it is my all time favorite blues song. Marriott sang his heart out on it. Steve was killed when his house caught fire. Some people believe his manager, Sharon Osborne’s dad, had it done so that he would not have to pay Steve the money he owed him. He was a father of many children and a husband of no one. His beautiful voice was snuffed out when he was just 42 years old. Please please PLEASE play “I Wonder”. It’s best on the “Smokin’” album! I love it so much! I can’t wait for you to hear it!

Vicariously, you need to hear the 'Live' version of, 'I Don't Need No Doctor'. It's from the 'Live' Humble Pie Rockin' The Fillmore East double album from 1971? Stevie Marriott is one of the great rock vocalists ever. Though he was small of stature, he was a giant musically. He was plagued with Bi-Polar I think and had trouble with bandmates and management alike. (I think it was Steve that was troubled, but I can handle being wrong). In it's original configuration this was one of my favorite Rock bands all-time. Frampton was just a baby when he helped form this band. Thanks for this reaction.

A quote from Peter Frampton's memoir- "I wish he hadn't been crazy, but then maybe he wouldn't have been so hugely talented - you can't change one part of someone without losing the other.Everyone put up with it because of the talent". Peter maintained great respect for Steve until he died. Steve did have some demons sadly.

The young Peter Frampton has a (you'll appreciate this) Black Les Paul Custom that a friend loaned to him, as he didn't have a great guitar to play on this U.S. tour. Had a distinctive extra third gold humbucker mounted on it. You'll certainly notice the guitar and it's sound (one of the things that I love about you) The gig was so awesome, the guy just let him keep it. Just Imagine that!

This was filmed after Peter Frampton left to go solo. Peter wanted to be the front man and there just wasn't a chance for him as long as Steve was there. Steve was a natural front man with his history in acting. He had a Broadway type acting career as a teen, playing Oliver Twist. He came home one day, said he quit his acting job because he wanted to be a rock star instead. Anything with Steve Marriott is a must see. Humble Pie was featured on Midnight Special and they had The Blackberries with them. Their other major hit was I Don't Need No Doctor. Here's 30 Days from that special. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqeyaZtnoL9_h9U&pp=ygUlMzAgZGF5cyBpbiB0aGUgaG9sZSB3aXRoIGJsYWNrYmVycmllcw%3D%3D

Black Coffee was a minor hit in Honolulu in about 1973. Before the band played locally I had gotten a copy and digested it. I went to the concert and they were very good, with Marriot singing all the intros to the songs and any intervening language between. That seemed quite unusual to me. Quite notably, when the Rolling Stones came through town about six months later and did a set of concerts, Mick Jagger did the same thing, again very unusual! Humble Pie, was considered a hot group - their previous hit 30 Days in the Hole, had put them on the FM radio play lists of the time. But they didn't seem to last much longer! I think something happened to Marriot about then.

The lead singer sort of reminds me a bit of Rod Stewart. He has that grit in his voice. I was more familiar with Humble Pie in the San Francisco bay area with Peter Frampton before he went on to his solo career. Great reaction. Take care.....

"This track is a blues rock interpretation of Peggy Lee's classic..." 8:47 uuuhhh What?? I think you need to stop referring to whatever site you were reading there. The Peggy Lee song Black Coffee is completely different song just of the same name. THIS Black Coffee was written by Ike and Tina Turner in 1972 the year before Humble Pie sang it and Steve Marriott is singing in the same style and vocal emphasis as Tina. It's a flat-out cover of the song.

Scanning the comments it's weird no one mentions the original Tina Turner song. Credit where credit is due.

I thought this was their original but it was written and recorded by Ike and Tina Turner .. "30 Days in the Hole" is a banger and his older band Small Faces were great with sounds like Itchycoo Park Tin Soldier "Afterglow"

Music people know about Marriott. He never made it really big in the states....Peter Frampton, who was also in Humble Pie became HUGE with Frampton Comes Alive in the mid 70s. Steve Marriott was a brilliant blues voice....too many toxic substances got in the way and he died in a fire. I believe there was some question as to whether he may have set that fire on purpose. RIP

When Jimmy Page was forming The New Yardbirds (which was renamed Led Zeppelin) he invited Steve Marriott to join, but he declined. Bonham recommended his friend Robert Plant, and the rest is history.

OK this is the music of my generation, but it was through KZbin and Spotify I first heard much of the music I didn't could afford to buy in my youth! Like this one. What I remember is Marriott when in Small Faces singing "Tin soldier". To have seen the Tin soldier video with P.P. Arnold chorusing is a part of general education! You don't need to make a video, but you should have heard it! (and a few 100 other songs). Since its close to Halloween, todays offer is "Zomby Woof" with Frank Zappa (audio) or Zappa plays Zappa ft. Steve Vai & Napoleon Murphy Brock.
