I made a pumpkin clay mask from another you tuber. I was so excited and gave it away. Without testing it. When I used it. It burnt my face. I didn’t even use much fragrance I panicked and told everyone not to use it. And then eventually I bought your recommended ph tester. Making stuff is fun but could definitely be serious. Thanks for sharing. Love your videos

This is priceless information! I scream inside when I see people on social media using essential oils irresponsibly. Another very important consideration is our pets! Those who have pets etc. Do your research! Our fur family has sensitivities too for example, what you’re putting in your aromatherapy diffusers… Lavender is not ok for kitties. Don’t buy scented litter especially not lavender. Some incense can even be irritating or harmful. Anyway Thank You for this video ☮️💟🐝

For any newbies, I’d like to recommend scenting with fragrant carrier oils if you are nervous about the math and measurement aspects of formulating. Although you really need to nail down these basics if you want to create your own products, safely. I believe Marie did a video recently about her fav naturally scented ingredients. Mine are dragon fruit seed oil and blueberry seed oil. Note that carrier oil scents/colours/consistencies can differ from company to company, batch to batch - for example, Marie always sources what sounds like a decadently-scented plum kernel oil but mine smells like nothing. But ask around and research and you’ll find good carrier oils. My highly-scented fruit seed carrier oils in Canada (where the scent pushes through the final formulated products) were from Soap & More FYI (no affiliation I’ve just been impressed with their product line, carrier oils in particular!).

I love blueberry seed oil! 5-10% makes my face cream slightly green and just slightly fragrant. My plum oil smells nice but my cranberry seed oil is completely odorless.

I often use essential oils but agree if not used wisely they can be dangerous. For example, my friend showed me a video that suggested using Oregano essential oil directly on the skin. But I explained to her if it is put directly on the skin it can cause a severe burning rash. Even if you use a carrier oil with it there is still a need to take care.

I am regularly horrified by the casual way people sling essential oils around, not to mention certain mlm’s that recommend that their “consultants” advise users to use neat essential oils on the skin, and to take essential oils internally!!!! NEVER apply neat essential oils to the skin and DEF NEVER ingest them!! These are strong chemical compounds, treat them with care and respect. And just to make this comment a little relevant, light scents are far more appealing than too much so if in doubt, look up your usage rates, and err on the light side.

Generally yes. But there are a handful that you can use neat, and can ingest a very few too. A few drops of new directions Ess Peppermint Oil in water can be wonderfully cooling. But you do have to be careful though, I have messed up, best proceed with utmost caution!

Glad I found you. I made your conditioning beard balm. It was there my Eyes were opened to how Complex it can be to Formulate a good product verses just make it. Lots of folks want to Make a video, make a product and not learn or research what they put in it. Most folks want a ingredient not tested on animals..lol Rats but don't realize that if you don't follow some rules or Technical Guied lines, you are going to make some thing that can harm you Human Rats. I had made a section in my note book rules and technical things before I found you. It's getting fuller. Thanks for great videos.

The thing about Dr. Pappas is that he signs off on these gc/ms reports for EO companies that claim their product is 100% pure, but the report clearly has unidentified or unknown constituents. That's pretty scary.... and when I asked the EO company about it, they said there are some things that are not yet known to science and could therefore not say what they are.....like WHAT? 😳

Absolute legend you are Marie. Thankyou SO MUCH! This is the information I've been searching for. I'll be reading all the partner blog posts particularly the one for this video. I think safe usage for all fragrances, eo's & natural fragrances too, is one of THE most crucial safety responsibilities for a skincare formulator and even soapmakers. Often I see people being way to cavalier about it all and that's actually pretty frightening..

I do love essential oils but I find it hard to formulate an elegant smelling product... I have created a few winners but I mainly find it hard due to the preservative smell. Naticide does tend to work well with floral scents. I have come to prefer using a couple of my favourite carrier oils to scent instead and I love the subtle scent.

I have a question that’s semi-related, just something I’ve had in the back of my mind for quite a while. There are many young people these days who have started their own “slime stores” where they sell slime (basic slime: pva glue, borax and water), or what I had known as Nickelodeon’s Gak, when I was a kid. These slime makers/sellers will almost always add in fragrances (popular ones being those made by Nature’s Garden). They will haphazardly pour unmeasured “glugs” of the scent liquids into their batches of slime. Based on my understanding of the need to be very cautious with fragrances in product formulating, does this lack of awareness or concern for usage amounts seem like a potentially dangerous situation? Kids (and adults) buy slimes to touch and play with, resulting in a significant about of time where slime is in direct contact with skin, most often in the hands of young kids. What are you thoughts about this? I’m not a slime maker and this isn’t imperative in any way to me, it’s just something that’s been hanging around in my head, always popping up and wanting me to learn more about the issue. Thanks!

Damn I wish I was innovative. First they would need to use skin safe fragrance oils. Regardless of amounts little kids like to rub their eyes and nose ectera before washing. Then add on more fragrances then possibly the manufacturers recommendations is even more of a terrible idea. Even skin safe fragrances can lead to a reaction of some kind on some people. Especially kids not know what they are sensitive to yet or can develop. It is a terrible idea to buy these things. In my layman opinion.
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mandy! In short, yes, this could definitely be problematic, and I'd steer clear of purchasing such products. Some fragrances do have really high safe usage rates, but some (especially ones made for candles rather than skincare products) have low-to-no usage rates for things people will be touching. And, as Tracy notes, kids love to get up close and personal with things in ways that can definitely increase exposure and risk. From a business point of view... the fragrance is likely to be the most expensive ingredient. Why use far more than required and create a potential safety risk at the same time? 😕

Thanks again for another great video! I find very difficult to mix a couple or a few different essential oils for an unique desirable scent. It’s very hard to know what it will smell like with how much or how little of essential oils to be added at the end of the formula (within its proper usage rate) even if the lotion is scentless to begin with. Is there a way to test out the blended scent ahead of time and without wasting too much product?

hello, I'm trying to soften shea butter to make it easier to apply. I tried to remove the stearic fatty acid from the shea butter through dry fraction, which theoretically should make it softer, but this turns out to be difficult to do. so now I thought to buy oleic fatty acid and add that to the shea butter. do you think this would work?

so when using say like brambleberrys cashmere fragrance if the max is 2% thats saying 2% of say like 159 oz ( 4535.92) which would be my batch size of my body product? Trying to make sure i understand clearly. And from what it tells me i can safely use 3.20oz (90.72g) of fragrance for this batch (for a strong scent).

Hi! If you were making a 100oz batch, you could use up to 2oz of fragrance if the maximum usage level for the type of product you're making is 2% :) 2% of 159 = 159 x 0.002 = 3.18 oz Happy making!
