I did this same repair on an 05 Mazda 3. At first I sent in the module to a repair company in Candada called Xemodex which rebuild the electrical side of things. They said the hydraulic side was broken and sent it back. I just ended up buying a used unit from Ebay. The reprogramming process was simple enough. I downloaded the free software Forscan and saved the profile from the old ABS module. When I installed the junkyard module I inserted the profile from the old one. Then I bled the brakes. The hardest part for me was by far reconnecting all of the brake lines. It was pretty annoying getting them threaded correctly and because of how close together they were placed it made it pretty difficult to tighten them all properly. Overall a pretty straightfoward job. The only difficult thing is the reprogramming process. Seems much more difficult for this model since it has traction control and other features while the Mazda just had ABS.

Absolutely more 2.5L 5cyl VW videos. Love those engines, my middle kid still has a Golf Highline 2.5L with 145k on it running strong. We as a family have had 6 different VWs with the 2.5L and knock on wood no major issues at all. Oldest kids 2.5L Jetta had windshield wiper motor fail (common part failure issue on mk6 Jettas) at 70k miles, I replaced it with the updated part myself $75, at 190,000 miles the N95 valve failed (stuck open so, after filling at gas station car ran absolutely terrible trying to burn the vapor and fuel at idle) $25 part, took me 15 minutes to replace. We bought that Jetta for my kid when it had 3X,xxx miles on it. She drove it until 210,000 miles before we sold it and it still ran and drove like a 50k mile car. All maintenance completed on time and per VW recommendations, with the only failures being the wiper motor and N95 valve. I sold the car with 210k miles for more than I paid for it when I bought it off of a friend at 3X,xxx miles. Our other 2.5s were all also trouble free, except the wiper motor failure on 2 other MK6 Jettas. We as a family droves those cars from as low as, 5 miles as new car purchase and other 5 as used purchased with a maximum of 48,000 driving them all well past 100k and even the one to 210k with cars still running strong, reliable.

I've seen a lot of failures of ABS modules on Honda/Acura vehicles. They can fail electrically like this, or hydraulically as well (low pedal that never gets better). Pro tip, you don't have to bleed every wheel, especially when you're just R&R the same module. Before starting the repair use a brake pedal depressor to hold the pedal down. This will prevent the lines from bleeding out when you R&R the module. The just bleed the modulator at each line and you're done. I can swap one of these on most Honda & Acura cars, including bleeding in a half hour (plus they don't need to be coded). We install used ones and the usually work pretty well, especially since factory ones are often on backorder.

The fault in this case is probably the same case as this. But the desoldering don’t resoldering again. VAG have a pretty stinking one (actually a Bosch unit). The ABS unit on many models have/had a failure hitting the ground soldering joint at the controller board. It’s should handle 40A. The problem that is very hard to replicate is when you break at some cases the soldering joint desoldering and the ground “disconnect” making the ABS unit not getting power to the break assist and valve control. So it’s a gamble if you get breaks or not. And it’s also which state the ABS unit is in. So you can get breaks front wheel or only rear, or on only one side of the car or other scenarios. But this is not something that happens regularly but can happen at the right moment or in this case wrong moment. And the problem is when the driver say go down hill and use the break for some time and you get unlucky the soldering joint desoldering, you can loose all break pressure. Because the ABS unit have valves that open end closing for the ABS breaking it can be locked in state “open” that meaning no break. And when you crash or something else you stop the car or turn off the power/key. The soldering joint get cold and solder again. And on a crash that can say they didn’t find any reason or technical problems with the break. You can find this by some hard googling in VAG documents but nothing that they talk about, specially the VAG dealers. But this is one of the biggest reasons VAG sell half kit fix, it’s just the controller board and the case it’s sits in. I believe it’s many crashes and serious human damage or death because of this problem. And probably they say it’s drivers fault not hitting the beak or used the accelerator instead. I also find out that Kia and Hyundai uses now this Bosch ABS unit.

You can access the module without removing the pump, BUT... the module and the pump cannot be separated. I replaced the assembly about 1 year 3 months ago and 1 month ago the new (used) unit failed. Used to work at a Jaguar dealership where the same thing happened - and module took a crap, repair was extremely expensive. We had one tech that would go and talk to the customers and about 75% of the time he’d end up buying the car off them. He’d owners jags and been a jag tech since like the 80’s. He’d had the problems so many times, he took one apart himself and figured out how to fix it. Our dealership would charge a certain amount and advisors let the customers know it’s not covered under any warranty but it was like 1/3 the price. So whatever tech would take out the module, take it to him. He’d cut it open and resolder what needed, and whatever else was a known issue to him(based on his experience doing them for like 10yrs) and the other guy would put it back in. Car fixed, money made, job done. He kept the process secret tho, he wouldn’t teach anybody else or even let us watch him. Generally the car would stay overnight or a few days(depending what else may be wrong w it) and he’d do the work after hours in his corner.

I’m getting flashbacks of my 97 Mk3 GTI VR6. Had to replace the electronics on its ABS module. It was like the Passat mentioned in that it could be done in the car (barely). Don’t recall having to do any coding, but remember using VAG-COM (in those days) to run output tests to definitively diagnose the issue.

I would love to see some content on the 1.4 tsi engines for us plebs that drive slow boring cars. A detailed video on the fuel injectors like you did for the 1.8 and 2.0 would be amazing. Love your videos 👍🏻

ECS just did a great 2.5 video for auto cross. Seems to be the flavor of the month.

Great job Charles. Always there for the customer. Anyone, anyone at all. I know Charles is a busy guy. Is it possible to adapt ABS to a car that never came equipped it? Think pre computerized vehicles. In other words restomod. Thank you.

Not all abs module faults can be repaired, but in the UK THE COST OF Repair IS £300 from a specialist.

This is also a semi common failure for Honda/ Acura cars. It cost about the same to repair but (and this a quote from multiple dealer parts counters) they don't make replacement parts, because they never thought they would fail. It's been a year or so since I looked but at the time there was one module in North America. And I mean the literal description of North America. As in Mexico, USA, Canada.

(Pro-tip)use a brake pedal holder and push the pedal down about 5cm before you open the brake lines, it makes the job less messy. TDI, 5cyl, VR, W8 and W12 videos please🙏

Would you be able to talk about the diagnostic steps that pointed towards a module? I've got a MK7 TDI with ABS/ESP/TPMS/Airbag lights on, codes pointed to a wheel speed sensor (that was the only code directly related to the ABS) but replacing it didn't fix the problem. When graphing wheel speed on VCDS you can see that wheel mostly following the other three but dropping out sporadically.

I have a 2010 Mazda3 BL series, and this is common on them too….but mine failed after 207K miles…it still cost about $1000 to get a remanufactured one, then labor & brake fluid. I thought it was on,y a common problem on them! Glad I don’t have a VW Golf, then. Other than that,it’s just been regular maitenance items. Still on its original Starter, Alternator & 02 sensors..

I love the 2.5. I’ve owned 3(2 jettas and a rabbit) all 3 pedals. Currently looking for another VW tho. Looking for a gti, unless I can find a good not too many miles sportwagen with the 2.5 and 3 pedals. I’ve heard and had the misfortune to experience once(luckily it was when I test drove it so I didn’t pay for it), that the transmissions are somewhat weak even for stock power - at least in the mk5. Specifically the final drive and the differential.

The uk market has brought out a recall for the abs modules now 🤣 you have to replace the module and code but they are such a pain to code! And it even says on the repair to add bags of ice on top to stop it overheating when coding 🤣🤣

One of my customer took their fire escape to dealer for recall. They had a left front abs wire broken. The dealer tech went to aba module and cut right front wire and wires left front wire to right front input. Quotes customer 3500 to replace module.

I had to do mine. (12 GTI) I sent it out to get repaired and their repair broke in a week. They warrantied the part and it also broke. Bought identical part # on eBay and I've been good for 2 years

For BMWs with the MK60 ABS, the part was failing enough to make them sell the electronics separately as a "repair kit". I don't think it has anything to do with warranty or reliability, I guess the manufacturer just want to avoid the cost of stocking 2 different items. The manufacturer doesn't have to pay for the part, so always selling the more expensive one is beneficial for them (unless there are too many warranty claims)

Love to see more 2.5 vids. Also not sure if my abs is on its way out as well on my mk6 tsi car or it's a wheel sensor. But when I get on an off ramp with a wide turn and a few bumps those lights from the video go on then. Once I park the car and turn it off and on they go away. You think it's my module or a sensor? If you have time to give me a general response I would appreciate it. Thanks Charles and I love the content!
