Always inspect the gears and guides. I did this on an R32 that was having an odd noise at start up, but timing was still OK. It had 120k-ish (I think) so we recommended timing chains just for the mileage, but also guessing a tensioner was failing. As we were disassembling we kept finding things that were just fine until we got the upper timing guides and chain off. The guides were wrecked and the intermediate gear was actually missing teeth and the ones remaining had been ground down. It was genuinely baffling that the car hadn't jumped timing. We pulled the pan and oil pump and found the missing teeth in the oil pump pickup tube.

Hi Charles, great video quality and camera work. The colored marks you put on the engine and components really helped drive home where things are and the correct alignments. Perfect! Couple of questions - 1.) Audi doesn't mention when the timing chains should replaced in any of their Maintenance Intervals. For those of us with older vehicles (Audi TT Mk2) what is a reasonable mileage point when 3.2 VR6 owners should start seriously thinking about this; 100k, 150k, 200k miles?. 2.) When should the N205 and N318 Cam Adjustment Valves be replaced? Is there a mileage point or do you just wait for a fault code to show up? Would you recommend these be done as part of everything else you've replaced for this job? Thanks in advance and Cheers from Switzerland! :-)

It's time to do the Eurovan again. 50k miles on Iwis chains with Febi guides and new intermediate gears. I didn't to the cam gears but they certainly have signs of wear, along with a couple of cam lobes. Currently looking for a low mileage Touareg 3.2l head to rob cams and actuators from. 225k miles on the bottom end, no blow by, cylinders micd good at 177k miles when I had the head off. I was going to do it with the motor in the van and just removing the trans but it is so easy to do with the motor out and by the time you get to that point, it is only 2 more nuts.

Hi is possible to do the timing chain without taking the sprocket from the cams?
@RedondoBeach23 жыл бұрын
Charles, when replacing all of the parts involved with this job, would you also include the harmonic balancer? My understanding is that the internal composition of the harmonic balancer can degrade over time. An argument can be made that it's a lifetime part, but that same argument can be made about the timing chain. We all know that the guides and tensioners are the reason people end up replacing the chains, guides, tensioners, etc. So, when performing a timing chain replacement, is it also a smart idea or bad idea to replace the harmonic balancer? If you can please give your rationale for either decision, it would help. Another great video. Thank you.

I know chances of a response are low but the manual says the follong for the exhaust cam adjuster: The camshaft adjuster (exhaust side) is locked when it is in the rest position, so the sender wheel cannot be turned out of position when adjusting the valve timing. If the camshaft adjuster is not locked in the rest position, turn adjuster by hand in both directions until it locks. If this is not possible, renew camshaft adjuster. Can you please explain what this means?

I measured chain stretch with OBDeleven, it's at -5.82 degrees which is way beyond what it should ever be. Now I'm a little nervous about even driving it to a shop. At what point is it so stretched that it's at risk for jumping time? Not to mention the tensioner time bomb

I timed a vr6 of mine a couple months ago, using all the correct timing tools and pretty much this exact method. Replaced all hardware but I found that the oil pump sprocket would sit 2mm past the actual timing mark on the block and it infuriated me, to the point I probably re timed the engine several times. Everything would line up again and the cam locking tool would fall in but the crank pulley would then sit a couple mm from its original mark but not enough for it to be a tooth out. I get an intermittent fault on vcds saying bank b variator implausible reading, but it goes away and comes back 50 miles later, I keep thinking back that the timings out but I very much doubt it is and I've probably got a variator or actuator fault. Have you had this fault appear after timing at all?
@TankerTV3 жыл бұрын
Same thing for me! I wasted nearly 5 hours just because the line was a few mm off. Then after I checked everything again I was sure that I couldn't be a tooth off and took everything together. I got the errorcode 17748 now (Cam/crankshaft sensor bank 1 implausible reading lower limit exceeded) which is permanent but the CEL isn't always on. Sometimes I also get the code 16725 but I can delete that and hasn't come back by now. The car drives and Idles fine but I don't know if I need to take the engine out again.
@waynerob113 жыл бұрын
@@TankerTV i took it apart again and its chain, its not correct, the timing marks do not line up, ive timed it up again 1 tooth out on the crank and its miles better. its probably something to do with the frankenstein engine ive made out of an audi a3 and golf r32

I ran into a little problem after rebuilding my engine it ran fine for about 500miles and I had some issue that seemed to be with my timing DTC P0014 based on the number on blocks 90,91,208 and 209 my timing seemed to be off. After opening up the engine at TDC the plate will not slide in. if I move the cam to have the plate fit it cause a slack on the chain and I simply can’t get it back on time after two rotations.
