Excellent presentation for a challenging fly to tie. Really appreciate the detailed demos of subtle but key steps making your Humpy a perfect proportioned tie. Kaizen (Bob)

Thanks so much for this video. I’ve struggled for ages getting proportions right, following your instructions I reckon 1 in 10 of mine are acceptable now! Tying them down to size 20 for some pocket water fishing in the Czech Republic next week...! Simon

Just a beginner at fly tying but after watching a couple different videos, this one was by far the best. Yes, the humpy is such a great fly, I need to learn how to tie it!

Charlie has obviously gleaned all the tricks from great tiers. Love the comment at the end about this fly somewhat falling out of favor. This fly was the "go to" fly in the West before the stimulator and you are missing the boat if you don't try it. I like moose mane for the tail.

I’ve watched this probably 6-7 times. Having trouble figuring out a way to manipulate the hair properly using one hand (lost a hand in the military). I’m descent at deer hair streamers but dry flies are very tough for me. Videos like this help me figure out how to adapt for my own needs. Thanks Charlie.

Thanks Charlie, this is one of my favorite flies to fish. It was one of the first I used and it was the most productive for many years, it has also been one of the most difficult for me to tie correctly, I fish mine but hide them from my fishing buddies! Your description of the process shows me how to correct all my flaws. The wing the body were the bane of my tying this fly, but I hope your information will change that!

Great video quality, stopped tying humpies a couple of years ago because like you I had so many . Now that I live in Montana they are the go to fly in the summer and are killer on the Madison and any other rivers around here that have Stoneflies and Caddis . Charlie if you get out to Ennis give me a shout and we can do some fishing :-) Happy Trails

I fish the arkansas and the humpy in yellow and gray or green is the ultimate search fly once the shadows are on the canon I also use moose on the tail sometimes to give it a dark black tail gives it that trailing shuck effect great tie great flies unsinkable

This is also one of my favorite flies to tie. I actually won a tying competition in New Jersey many moons ago back when Jack Dennis was part of the judge panel. I haven’t tied one since but if I recall correctly, I tied the wing differently such that I wouldn’t have the step from tying off the body hair behind them. This of course makes it harder to judge the wing height than with your method. Nice rendition, Charlie.

I really like the way you explain the procedures as this will help fly tyers, beginning or someone that needs that final touch. I've tied a few thousand of these over the years and sometimes have even split the wings, but I grew up tying the Goofus Bug, (the original Humpy) which I feel is as effective without splitting the wings. Maybe you've noticed the difference between fishing them? Love to hear your thoughts. Either way, they both are fish catchers and should be in everyone's fly box. Thanks for your fantastic videos!!! One last thought- I've been adding a small dab of clear UV on the hump which does improve the overall durability.

The streams I fish must be full of some of the dumbest fish in the world. My flies only kind of resemble Charlie's but they seem to do OK. Wish I had the patience to tie something like this. Beautiful!

I love your flies. I use many of them. I'll give this humpy a go. One thing though...do you have a video on why one would use one tying thread brand over another for various flies? I notice you use Vevus for this one, Uni for others, and UTC for yet others. I use UTC a lot because it's just what I have. Would I be handicapped tying this humpy with my UTC?

Charlie, I love the videos ! why are the humpy and elk hair caddis tied with elk hair rather than deer? And conversely why are other flies tied with deer and not elk? Thanks, Patrick :-)

The elk hock used here is much more variegated than the elk hock I got which is just dark almost plain black. Is it just luck of the patch?
@CharliesFlyBox
@CharliesFlyBox 4 жыл бұрын
ibookje did you get elk or moose? Both can be variegated and it depends on which side of the leg it came from. The front is darker abs the inside/outsides are lighter and more variegated.

@@CharliesFlyBox Great details and tips! The hock is the hind leg not the foreleg.
@CharliesFlyBox

@@RVRRUN00 no, it indeed comes from the front leg but I was referring to the front side of the leg (shin) versus the sides.

Been having a great time learning how to twist up this fly! Question - the elk hair on the hump seems delicate and may break apart in a fishe's mouth. Would it be a good idea to appoxy? Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. They have been a huge resource for me 🙏
@CharliesFlyBox
@CharliesFlyBox 3 жыл бұрын
Epoxy or resin adds weight, so, no. It’ll break up as you catch a bunch but flies are meant to be used. Use ‘em up.
