A few thoughts on getting the measurements for a loose journal or book cover.
I totally forgot to mention this:
I always cut my leather with at least half inch around the project and leave a plain margin around the tooling. Then, when I am done tooling, color and finish/condition, only then do I cut the cover to size.

Thank you Johan for this video. It takes a lot of the guess work out of making these covers. I made my first one recently and more or less folded the large piece of leather around the book which was bulky to handle. Using the strap would have been much easier. I had a bit of shrinkage after I wet the leather to tool it and then dye it. This made the cover a bit tight. Next time I will allow a bit more for that. I enjoy all of your videos and look forward to more.

I get not only instruction but incentive from you videos and replay them for ideas. This one is especially helpful as I am working some journal covers right now. One question, could you share anything on the stitching, it is beautiful and unique. Thank you for taking the time and effort to share your knowledge and experience.

Thank you for another great video. What do you use to finish and protect your projects. In the states they use things like Neatsfoot oil and Acrylic resolene etc. Do you use local products?

Timothy Dare I live in the USA myself. But when I visit South Africa, I always bring a container or two of Dale's Dubbin back with me. You buy it at any local supermarket. (Sorry, I should have asked: are you in South Africa?)

Used to make book covers out of paper grocery bags as a kid for school....same principle....Neat: Why all the blue tape on all your stamps?
@leatherworker
@leatherworker 4 жыл бұрын
The blue on the stamps is enamel paint I mark them with in case I take some of them too guild meetings or other occasions where they might get mistaken for tools belonging to someone else......
