There just aren't enough studies and organizations pursuing the effects of ketones.. ketones via diet and fasting.. but many of us don't wait for the studies.. Anecdotal evidence (a family member) suffering from dementia exacerbated from hearing loss and also traumatic brain injury (same family member) has won me over.. We wouldn't have known about it if it weren't for both Dr. Bret Scher and Dr. Mary Newport. Keep doing what you do.

How did your relative reacted to consuming ketones? Were they not exogenous ? Can you elaborate on that? I’m trying with my mother who also has hearing problems and beginnings of dementia
@AzaleaBee
@AzaleaBee 23 күн бұрын
@@luiggidecaro1621 I was referring to endogenous ketones. We encouraged our loved one to change his diet .. change in what, how much, how often, and when he ate.. as well as activity which can effect ketones and other things.. but we were careful to support changes gradually.. targeting what was needed but making it easier for the changes to be made by this person so the changes were more organic.. not pushed from us. It required patience and almost an evolution of change. Introducing coconut oil was really helpful and quite easy. But MCT (C8) was a game changer! I do most of the cooking so it's easy for me to add some coconut oil to a salad dressing or smoothie. MCT because of its potency(?) and cost is different. We keep a small vial visible and easily accessible so our loved one knows to take it on his own EVERYDAY and can easily do so without measuring or pouring. We refill the vial regularly, because if it ever went empty, our loved one wouldn't take the initiative to take it otherwise. Initially the dosage needs to be small and VERY gradually increased. Otherwise it would be too easy for the loved one to simply refuse it. A battle easily lost. I really didn't understand how much hearing loss in an adult could affect/exacerbate dementia. But I suspected its effects as we witnessed change in our own house. On top of that, the traumatic brain injury was like a cruel joke. Thank goodness it seemed to be back to "normal" a year later. It is so important to make changes WITH the person. I mean changes made together that the whole family follows as well as changes that specific loved one makes for him/herself.. even if the change was from outside, it needs to seem as if the person did it with complete authority/autonomy. So how is your mother doing? How receptive is she to change and accepting your advice?

@luiggidecaro1621 I replied to your comment weeks ago, but sadly I my reply doesn't appear. The ketones I refer to are not erogenous.. simply produced by the body from a whole foods ketogenic diet.. the what being consumed as important as the length of time nothing is consumed (daily intermittent fasting). We do use coconut oil and also a daily supplement of high quality C8 MCT oil.. both make a huge difference.

Just wanted to thank both of you (Dr Sher and Dr Newport). The work you two have been doing was pivotal in helping me build a foundation to care for my mother throughout her 12 year journey through Alzheimer's. She passed in October of last year. Unlike so many Alzheimer's patients, she had such an easier time, with less problems, better mood, longer cognitive plateaus, and much smaller cognitive drops through the course of the disease. Again, thank you both for all of the information, and rabbit holes you sent me down... I couldn't have done it with out your work!

Elephant in the room - especially in western society, what about the consumption of simple carbs , sugars and alcohol? As a Pacific Islander I feel it's worth noting the effects of the aforementioned "foods" has caused an obesity and type 2 diabetes epidemic in the South Pacific (as well as other indigenous cultures). Ghee / butter (mammalian fats) contain MCT as well which are geographically nearer to the American west regarding their production. Though I don't think mammalian fats contain lauric acid... On both a macro and preventative level , we should all extremely limit or cut out alcohol consumption , simple carbs and sugars (obviously). Rather than reactively dose ourselves with a product that's grown on the other side of the planet when we begin to see evidence of mental decline in ourselves or those around us. Copra (coconut) farming is not helping the environments of those places where it's farmed. Does it benefit their local economies? Sure , but this is never sustainable. I have seen those forests of diverse foods for local communties plowed down as well as mangrove habitats to make room for the western appetite for copra. We need to figure out how to obtain the same benefits from the foods nearest to us. This has always been a convo around a needed cultural shift around western dietary habits. Health and wellness is a bajillion dollar industry as we all should know - clearly not a real dollar value , but I hope my point is made.

Animal fat contains tiny amounts of MCTs; milk fat from humans, goats, cows, and other mammals also contain lauric acid and the other MCTs. Sugar is a huge problem and I talk about that in other podcasts and in my books. Coconut trees live for many decades, and each can produce up to 70-90 coconuts per year. The farmers don't get paid enough but some governments agencies are helping them figure out how to raise animals or other crops between the trees to make the most of their land. The coconut tree can also be used as wood for housing and furniture, and the stuff around the coconut meat and water can be used to make a great mulch that holds water very well. Coconut is known as the tree of life in the tropics because there is water inside the coconut, the meat provides food, and the rest of the tree (fronds and trunk) can provide shelter.

@@t.corazon6350 Yes and for each island / nation the story varies, on a whole one could easily posit that the arrival of western culture shifted diet. Rice which was also not consumed prior to Japanese occupation on most islands. This massively modified their standard diets. The truth is WW2 changed our S.A.D. (standard American diet) to what we have today. Not our fault BUT we need to remember this and learn. Food shortages led to creating spam , cheerios etc. Helped us survive! I know that's a huge tangent/digression from this vid but I think the context is valuable. What is truly crucial now is modifying food culture proactively (teach your grandkids...) because the truth is , they have more life ahead of them to live healthy.

Why is Axona no longer marketed as a medical food in the United States? In 2013, FDA determined that Axona is misbranded under section 403(a)(1) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act [21 U.S.C. § 343(a)(1)] because the labeling is false and misleading in that the product is labeled and marketed as a medical food but does not meet the statutory definition of a medical food.

How much coconut oil and MCT oil did they add? I've been taking a tablespoon of C8 (called Brain Octane by Bulletproof) blended into my bulletproof coffee for several years, and I love it. And I notice that I feel better when I drink milk and eat butter, also sources of MCFAs. So I'm curious how much is needed to get the effects in this video. Also, one reason why people might be reluctant to try coconut oil is that saturated fat has been demonized for over 50 years. The idea that any kind of saturated fat could be actively healthy just doesn't compute, even though the early studies showing a link were done when coconut oil was hydrogenated, not the natural virgin coconut oil we can get today. I imagine that a lot of people want proof that they're not going to give themselves or their loved ones heart disease. There's so much black and white thinking: this or that category of food is either good or bad.
@sportysbusiness
@sportysbusiness 18 күн бұрын
LOL, if someone is in cognitive decline, worrying about saturated fat (which is actually healthy btw) is silly. There are no definitive amounts of MCT oil to take, and you need to build up as carb dependent people will get diarrhoea until they become fat adapted. Watch Mary's earlier videos, I believe 2 tbsps per meal made a big difference for her husband but she did research into what the studies had used.

Thats a great question that we don't really know the answer to. It makes sense that it may help somewhat, although likely is going to be variable. In Mary's experience, her husband probably wasn't eating a keto diet at first, but was relatively low carb, and still saw significant benefits. But that's very different than eating the SAD with 300g carbs.
@marynewportmd3214
@marynewportmd3214 24 күн бұрын
@@metabolicmind I agree. If you just take a ketone ester but still eat a lot of carbs, the ketone level could fluctuate up and down quite a bit. It would be best to at least reduce carbs to help control blood sugar levels and help keep the ketone level more sustained - high levels of glucose can be inflammatory to nearly all tissues including the brain. A relatively easy way to do this is to start by cutting your portions in half of foods like bread, rice, pasta, cereals, and get rid of sugary beverages. After you are used to that try cutting the portions in half again. In the meantime, you could gradually increase the fats in the diet.

I would like to ask you if it is possible that Omega 3 fatty acid supplements have negative effects on our brain? I take one 1000mg capsule a day and feel that the omega 3 supplement is having a rather negative effect on my brain. Thank you

DHA has traditionally been thought to benefit brain health. But each individual may have their own experience, so it's important for each person to listen to their body.

If you like fish, that may be a better way for you to get omega-3 DHA.

I have heard that if you take Omega 3 capsules or even cod liver oil supplements, the Omega 3 may well be oxidized and cause more harm than good. As Dr Newport said, eat fish. I eat a can of salmon every 2 or 3 days to get my Omega 3. Sardines are better but, I don't like sardines. Choose fish packed in water or olive oil.

Try taking 1 teaspoon at a time and work your way up. If you start too high, you could spend too much time in the bathroom. You can try to go up to 2 or 3 Tb per day. Find your own "sweet spot" Take it first thing in the morning 2 hours away from eating. It will also produce ketones to start your day. The MCT C8 is great for dementia too.

There isn't necessarily one protocol to follow. You can start with Dr. Newport's website where she has many more details. coconutketones.com
