Hungarian explained - such long words, such an isolated language

Why is Hungarian so isolated in Europe, surrounded by unrelated languages that don't share its long words? An animated linguistic take on the history and grammar behind Hungarian's uniqueness.

~ Spoiler Alert! ~
I couldn't ignore the many commenters who've pleaded with me to give Hungarian a shot. After gathering up some grammars and purchasing Lendvai's history, The Hungarians, I see why! I just had to share this linguistic tale.
This video tells two stories that intertwine. First, how Hungarian got to be such a lonely language island among Indo-European languages. Second, how Hungarian uses a long-word-building strategy that's "foreign" in a European context: agglutination with vowel harmony. At the end, the two come together as linguists trace its words back to a common ancestor called Uralic. The Uralic family explains Hungarian's uniqueness, but also its distant relations to Finnish and Estonian within Europe and its closer shared prehistory with Uralic languages in Russia that suggest a long, long, LONG migration from Siberia!
I cut an observation from the video that I wish to add here. "Agglutination" is abnormal in Europe, but that could have more to do with a quirk of Indo-European than Uralic. "Agglutinative" languages aren't rare around the world, and even other families like Turkic have vowel harmony. Compare that European-style "fusional" types.
I am not Hungarian - check and correct. That said, I poured into this every last ounce of the time I spent practicing the language.

I was born in Hungary but I’ve been living in the US since I was like 6 months old. Anyways, I didn’t speak Hungarian until I was like 7, and I’m not kidding when I say that the grammar is just too different. The way the sentences are structured and how you connect comparative phrases... whew if you would learn Hungarian as an adult, I’d buckle up cause it’s a very difficult language... Viszont azt szeretem a legjobban a magyarba hogy tényleg nem lehet úgy káromkodni angolul mint magyarul. Meg furcsa volt látni sok magyart a kommentekbe mert nem nagyon szoktam nézni magyar videókat (a komédián kívül) Üdvözlök mindenkit :)

Nyilas Karod oh for sure. It’s a very Complex language and it has so many different variables of sentence structures. You can say the same sentence in so many ways. You can switch around the words and add different endings to them and it’ll still be the same sentence. It’s almost like having infinite possibilities. Knowing the Hungarian language also opens up doors for us to be able to speak and learn other languages quicker than average.

The other thing is that you can dare to pronounce vowels with an open mouth. We usually talk slower to sound out vowels in a more understandable way. Spanish has it, although we don’t really think of it as a separate phoneme. The letter "y" is usually a palatal approximant like the Hungarian "j", but when it comes after an "n", it’s strengthened to your "gy" sound. There’s also a palatal lateral sound, spelled "ll", that almost nobody preserves anymore. In the same way that Hungarian "ly" merged into "j", Spanish "ll" merged into "y". Some example words containing the voiced palatal stop are "enyesar" (to plaster), "inyección" (injection), "conllevar" (to entail) and "cónyuge" (spouse).

When I was on an Erasmus exchange in Finland, one of my professors told us why Hungarian and Finnish were similar. There once was a group of nomads that travelled through Europe. Basque is oddly similar to Hungarian, even though all they supposedly share is that they are both non-Indoeuropean. It is also an agglutinative language, with 17 cases and quite a few compounded others. They are both surrounded by completely different languages... the similarities are more than they appear, from having multiple words for “brother” and “sister” to making plural forms adding different vowels and a -k. Let’s take the word wonderful “nagyszerü” (forgive me for not finding the correct u on the keyboard) In Basque we say “zoragarria” literally: which drives one crazy Zoro: crazy Garri: with the quality of making you (whatever comer before) -a: definite article Zorragarri: wonderful Zoragarria: wonderful thing (definite) Zoragarriak: wonderful things Zoragarriok close wonderful things, our wonderful things These 3 above can all be declined differently, I am not going to do that because we would never end. Some examples that appeared in the video but with Basque: Zoragarriri: to a wonderful one Zoragarriari: to the wonderful one Zoragarriei: to the wonderful ones Zoragarrioi: to these wonderful ones Zorragarrirako: for the wonderful one (when it’s inanimate) Zoragarriarentzat: for the wonderful one (animate) Zoragarriarentzako: (same as the one above but emphasised) Zoragarriago: more wonderful (indefinite) Zoragarrien: most wonderful (indefinite) Zoragarrienetarikoa: one of the most wonderful This list could go on forever. As I said before, Basque is also an agglutination language, but verbs do not tend to be just as long because the true issue here are the auxiliary verbs, which carry all the information. An example: jakin (to know, known) - there are no true infinitives in Basque Jakin: to know, known Dakit: I know something Dakizkit: I know more than mine thing Jakinarazi: to make others know, to report Jakinarazi dizut: I have informed you (formal, singular) DI: one object [Acc] ZU: to you [Dat] T: I [Nom] Now with a longer example: Jakinarazi zeniezazkidaketen: you (plural) could have informed me about those things Little by little: ZEN: you in the past [Nom] I: shows there is [Dat] EZA: [Acc] object (something) ZKI: makes the object plural DA: [Dat] to me KE: Shows potential mood, to be able to TE: Makes you plural, just ZEN would be singular N: Past tense for the whole sentence I am sure there are longer verbs, but I believe this one makes it easy to see that Basque adds both to the verb itself and to the auxiliary, especially to the latter, leading to mostly shorter words than Hungarian. Again, thank you so so much for these videos. You show you really are informed and inform us in an incredibly entertaining way. I hope this information about the Basque language (euskara) is useful to someone. On the whole, it just makes me happy to see that even though it is a language isolate, we are not alone, for there are relatively similar languages out there, maybe not so much grammatically but emotionally, since due to their well-known difficulty not many people study them. Well guys it’s not difficulty, it’s just called difference. In the Basque Country, it is not being born here what makes you Basque, but speaking the language, no matter where you live. This is probably why it has survived, and could most possibly be why Hungarian is alone surrounded by totally different languages. Basque, or, Euskaldun(a) literally means “the one who owns the Basque language” Again, thank you so so much (Eskerrik asko bihotz-bihotzez)

@brianhammer5107
@brianhammer5107 4 жыл бұрын
There is no relationship whatsoever with Basque. Basque is a language isolate, with no known link to any other language (although in ancient times their neighbors in northwestern Hispania probably spoke a related language, now long-dead and forgotten; at the time of the Roman colonization of Hispania, it was already realized that the Basques spoke a language like no other.) When you hear these "similarities" between the Magyar language and the Basque language, it's just coincidence. In linguistics, this is found many, many times between unrelated languages. Languages are found to be related by appying a technique known as "comparative linguistics," which is done by professionals. Amateur attempts at guessing relations between languages - while often hilariously amusing - are just so much fluff.

Well, yes, but certainly when I was a child I never heard it. No one in my family swore like that. But in Toronto, in a doctor's waiting office, I head people speaking Hungarian and one of them referred to that part of a horse's anatomy which is also used as swearing. I was so surprised that I asked "who said that?"It turned out to be the doctor I was waiting to see, and I heard him chuckle to another man --both in white lab coats--and say "This is how it is when a Hungarian is in the office. I found the an uncombed, not wanting to listen, looking as though he stole the lab coat, and he had an empty face. That was first and last visit, and not because of the swearing. It was his whole attitude.
