It’s so interesting how such a small country can yield so many different recipes. My grand relatives came to the US from Hungary in 1958 but they make Kiffles “Slavic” style. 2 sticks butter 1 brick of cream cheese 2 egg yolks 2 cups flour and a pinch of salt that’s it! No yeast no Crisco (did they even have that in the old country) the key is to refrigerate your rolled and filled kiffles prior to baking so they stay flakey. Made with real ingredients…I don’t even want to begin to think what is inside a block of crisco lol.

Yes I agree! So many awesome recipes with different variations. I will have to try your recipe. My mom’s original recipe called for Spry (Crisco-like) but it isn’t produced anymore so Crisco it is! Probably not the healthiest for you but it is great for baking. Thank you for watching and your comment! 😄

FINALLY!!!! Someone pronounces kifli correctly. Thank you. We must remember that a lot of kifli recipes were modified due to the availability of ingredients in the "old country".Most of the recipes were handed down verbally with not very accurate measuring instruments at the time. Thanks for taking the time to do this video.

So glad I found this video! My grandma used to make these for Christmas every year. She passed away in 2021, and we found her recipe but I was never able to learn how to make them with her since she always had them made before we got there. I think I will try to make them for Christmas this year!

Just comparing my family’s Kiffles with yours. So very close, same ingredients just a little different portion. My recipe is from my Romanian Grandmother’s ( Baba). I make them every year along with her poppyseed strudel ! Nice to see someone Else carry on family traditions! All the best . Lindy Ps we roll the dough out in sugar instead of flour, and into a full sheet and then use a Kifflle cutter (that was my grandmother’s). Cut into squares and roll corner to corner. And we use a nut filling. That’s Made with ground nuts cinnamon sugar and a bit of milk or lemon juice ..whatever you have in the house to make a paste My mouth is watering 😂

@@lindybloom5 Lindy, your Kifli cookies does sound very similar to our Hungarian ones. So delicious! We love carrying on family traditions! We make a nut filled cookie as well. Thank you for your comment! I did find that Kifli has many variations, as I mentioned in the video, and they all look good! Maybe it depends on the origin of the family. Possibly different villages/towns in Hungary make dishes their own certain way. Thank you for watching! 😊

And if you roll the whole thing out and cut it up squares, you don't have to do it all day long ...😊 By the way, my Hungarian Mom do that like that who is actually living in Hungary. Thanks for the video! Good kifli-k!

Also I take a small melon baller sized “ice cream” scoop and portion out the big dough ball into smaller than golf ball sized pieces. Refrigerate as little as 2 hrs and then roll out a half dozen balls at a time in powdered sugar. Fill them with my home made walnut filling or fruit fillings from the Ukrainian bakery by me, and then I also dredge them once baked and cooled in powdered sugar before serving. A batch of mine yields about 50 kiffles.

Great recipe and very different than the one I’ve been making, so I’m going to give yours a try for Easter! One question I’d like to ask, what is the purpose of the yeast if it doesn’t get a chance to rise? Does the dough look like it proofed overnight when you take it out the next day? I’m just scratching my head on this one because I make so much bread and I use yeast so much in different recipes and I always have to let it proof first so I’m just wondering how it works with these cookies. Thanks so much for the video and I’ll let you know how the cookies turn out!
@MidwestMoodandFood2 жыл бұрын
Good question! I wish I had the answer. This is the way I've been taught and the family members who taught me are sadly gone so I can't ask them. You're right the dough doesn't really get a chance to rise so I'm not sure the reasoning for adding it to the sour cream. Maybe to help in the mixture process as a way to activate the yeast. Refrigerating the dough also hardens the dough and doesn't let it rise that much. I do know Hungarians use sour cream in many of their recipes! Would love to see how your cookies turn out for Easter because regardless of the method they are so yummy!! 😋 I appreciate your comments/questions and I thank you so much for watching! 😃

Our recipe is similar to yours except we don't use yeast and we either use imperial margarine butter whatever you want to call it or real butter and we separate our dough into four balls when we refrigerate overnight and we just roll out the whole sheet at the exact same time and then cut them up like an assembly line. And you are correct solo is the best I like the pineapple myself and the apricot and the Cherry.
@MidwestMoodandFood2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like another good way to make them. We've never done it like that but will have to try it! Do you use a cookie cutter to cut the shapes? How many Kifli does it make when you make it that way? Thanks for watching! :)
@mimisboys65742 жыл бұрын
@@MidwestMoodandFood we cut them into shape. And I've never actually counted them. But it makes a lot. We use 2 to 2 1/2 cans of solo each time. Depends on who's filling the cookies 😂

How much sugar?
@MidwestMoodandFood Жыл бұрын
Hello! I use 3 Tablespoons in the recipe and I keep a bowl full of sugar ready so when the cookies come out of the oven I sprinkle them with sugar. Let them cool for a few minutes first because they are really hot out of the oven. Thanks so much for watching! 😊
