Hungary did not conquer Croatia. There was a succession war and Arpad dynasty managed to prevail with majority of Croatian nobility accepting Coloman as King of Croatia in 1102. The Croatian dyansty died out in male line and this was the reason for the succession. King Demetrius Zvonimir was married to Helen, sister of Bela I...they had two daughters and a son, however their son died before Zvonimir and the title went to Zvonimir's nephew who had been a monk, he also died without male issue obviously and this is where the succession crisis arose...Helen claimed the kingdom as the wife of Zvonimir and passed her rights to her brothers Geza and Ladislaus, however they were unable to impose their claim in the entire kingdom and this is where the succession crisis arose as there was a counter-candidate named Petar Svacic/Snacic who most likely also had some relation to the late Tripimirovic dyansty. The claim eventually passed to Geza's son Coloman who managed to enforce his claim and was thus recognized as king. Had Croatia been conquered it would've been colonized and their land and titles would be given to Hungarian families and tribes like it happend f.e. in Norman conquered England, however this did not happen as Croatian nobility retained their possessions and titles. Regarding this...this is a completely missed opportunity on your map as it should've included Croatian Trpimirovic family tree as well and it would compliment it and explain it perfectly. For this reason alone I must say this is one of poorest videos you made so far... Edit: Zapolja/Zapolya/Szapolyai family was not from Transylvania, John Zapolya was Voivode of Transylvania but his estates were in northern Croatia (Slavonia) and he was a Croatian-Slavonian nobleman. This is the reason why I think the fact you omit Croatia in almost the entire video is what I find really misleading and huge flaw in your video. Croatia and Hungary were in personal union and acted as a separate entities in all matters except the ruling monarch, this is why it would have been appropriate to refer all monarchs in this video as Kings of Hungary AND CROATIA. Croatia and Croatian nobility had huge influence in forming what was the medieval Kingdom of Hungary or rather ''Archiregnum" i.e. Lands of the St. Stephen. For example the reason why Capet-Angevin dynasty even succeeded in obtaining the Hungarian and Croatian throne was due to a fact a Croatian Subic noble family gave them crucial support and foothold in both kingdoms. Croatians f.e. were the ones who sheltered Bela IV from the Mongols, bore the brunt of the Ottoman incursion, etc, etc....

Great chart! However, you missed the fact that Wladyslaw III of Poland was given the crown of Hungary in 1440 to his death in 1444 at the battle of Varna. This was however contested by Ladislaus the Posthumous and his mother in a civil war. After the death of the king of Poland, the Hungarian crown passed to Ladislaus.

Corrections: 1:55 The accent on the é is missing from Grand Prince Géza, as well as on the Á in Álmos (brother of Coloman). 2:19 The grandson of Árpád should be called Taksony instead of Taksong. 1:55 It is debated if King Samuel was Stephen's brother-in-law or nephew, as these have the same name in Latin. However, as his children were too young to fight in the battle after which he died (all under 15 according to records), it is more likely that Samuel is a generation younger than Stephen, thus, his nephew. Otherwise: finally, the family tree I have been waiting for!

One additional omitted connection, which other viewers already pointed out, is that in 1440-44 Hungary was again in personal union with Poland, as King Władysław III was also king of Hungary. His reign and the union cut short by death in battle of Varna. There will be later a certain Hungarian nobleman on the Polish-Lithuanian throne in the period of elective monarchy.

To be fair it was sort of a legal loophole emphasizing that she was crowned a monarch in her own right, therefore Rex rather than Regina. She still was commonly referred to as Queen in Polish. It seems to me that recently people like to stress the fact that she was technically a king because it's a cool piece of historical trivia/gimmick. BTW her name, being (as people already pointed out) the Polish version of Hedwig, is pronounced approximately like "Yadvigah". :)

@wormeaten
@wormeaten 4 жыл бұрын
One tiny correction. Ladislav didn't conquer Croatia. The fact is his sister Helen (Jelena) was married to Croatian King Zvonimir. She was the daughter of King Bela I and the sister of King Geza I too. After King Zvonimir died and how his and Helen's son Radovan died before the Croatian Kingdom was without King. Helen calls her brother Ladislav I to take the Croatian crown. Part of the Croatian nobles didn't agree and that is how a civil war for Croatian crown started. To make a long story short those rebelled Croatian nobles in the end lost and with rowed to Bosnia, part of the Croatian kingdom. Bosnia was a mountain region with bad communication infrastructure perfect to rebellion and hard to establish low and order. So even Bosnia was officially part of Croatian kingdom recognized by Rome, practical power was in Hands of local Croatian nobles who didn't recognize Hungarian crown as Croatian too. It stayed like that till Bosnia was conquered by the Ottoman empire. Point is there is no conquest of Croatia, It was official Hungarian and Croatian personal union under the same crown. Ladislav I was Hungarian and Croatian King. Croatia was stayed separate and recognized the country in that way all the way to 1918.

Jadwiga was meant to be queen of Hungary and Mary to be queen of Poland, but polish nobles didn't want Mary on throne because she was married to Sigismund and if she would became queen Brandenburg and Poland will came into personal union (Sigismund was ruler of Brandenburg before he became king of Bohemia and Hungary)

Great video, thanks! We always say that the Árpád dynasty was extent in 1301. And this is true on the male line. But one can see from your video that the blood-line comes back thanks to different Hungarian princesses married to different foreign kings. Also, you mention that all Spanish kings has Árpád's blood in their veines. And if you check it, even the Habsburgs are partly descendants of Árpád! So, it would be quite interesting to follow the flow. To see a tree where the "green line" goes by the weddings to the different royal houses of Europe.

Matthias Rex from the house Corvinus is a popular monarch only because he lives in the Hungarian folklore as the Just King who punished the bad nobles and rewarded the "good" commoners, legend has it he often dressed as a commoner so he could sneak out and see how his people lived... And also he was kind of a tyrant, who over taxed the country waged wars against the western neighbours, occupied Wien and the better half of the Czech Kingdom with his infamous mercenary army the black army... Which army later after his death sacked half the country, his father John was a great military leader who protected the country from the Ottomans and died after his great victory in Nanforfehervar, now Belgrád

An interesting addition to the family tree could be Clementia (or Clémence) of Hungary (1293-1328), the sister of Charles I, as she was both the wife and the mother of French kings. She was queen consort of France and Navarre (1315-1316) as the second wife of king Louis X, who died in June 1316 while she was pregnant. Five months later she gave birth to a boy, king John I of France and Navarre, who lived only 5 days.

Tip for Polish Monarchy chart. Bolesław I was also duke of Bohemia trough his mother, that being Dobrava, daughter of Duke Bolesław the Cruel. I don't know how detailed will be your chart but there were many marriages between polish kings or dukes and hungarian or bohemian princesses: Duke Bolesław I wed some unknown hungarian princess, duke Mieszko III the Old wed Elisabeth of Hungary (no one is sure whose daughter she was), Kazimierz II the Just married bohemian princess Helena, Henry II the Pious married Anne of Bohemia, Bolesław the Pious wed Jolenta Helena of Hungary, Bolesław the Chaste married saint Kinga of Hungary, Leszek the Black wed princess Agrippina (technically Rurikovich but she was more hungarian than kievian princess, she was sister of queen of Bohemia Kunigunda - wife of Ottokar II), Bolesław II of Masovia married daughter of Ottokar II - Kunigunda, Bolesław III the Generous wed bohemian princess Margaret (or Małgorzata), Henry I of Jawor married her half-sister Agnes, Fiderick I of Liegnitz wed princess Ludmilla of Podebrady, and Sigismund the Old married Barbara Zapolya. I might have missed some. The rest are marriages with Habsburg princesses (Elisabeth, Catherine, Elisabeth, Cecilia Renata, Eleonora and Maria Josepha).

I'm a bit disappointed to see not the proper names. Emeric should be Imre, Stephen is István, Lasislaus is László, Jadwiga is Hedvi, Solomon is Salamon... Hungarians are not Slavs, our King's names weren't spelled that way. But I'm happy that there is a channel discussing the history of the "minorities of the modern world politics". In their times, these countries were the dominating ones, just history led things on certain ways.. Keep up the fantastic work! :)

While we call them their name in Magyar form, it doesn't mean they used same like us. Don't forget, they used Latin instead of Hungarian.

@@GregoryKun Thats an interesting point, but its hard to be sure actually as it was not well recorded. I really wonder how for example the transition of Vajk happened to István (Stephen). Do people started calling him on his new name? DId other people who followed him also did this? I guess it must have been a wave of babtism, so many followers got their new names... Interesting times! :)

2 things about the polish part: Bolesław I ( Chrobry) was duke of Poland from 992 to 1025 when he became the king for around 3 months and he was also duke of bohemia from 1002 to 1003, next Queen Jadwiga had the title of king of Poland, not the queen that's because of our nobles decision, it's a pretty complicated topic but in short she was king even if she was a woman, normally in china or western Europe she would be Queen but not in Poland so please change it. I'm waiting for polish royal family tree episode & I hope u will get this mess right even if it's hard to understand. Oh, I missed one thing too, King Wladyslaw III (Warneńczyk) was king of Hungry from 1440 to his death near Varna while fighting Ottomans.

I think 1440-1444 it should be Vladislaus I contested by Ladislaus the Posthumous. Vladislaus II is called the second because of his uncle and both of his parents had the connection to previous kings of Hungary - his father was the brother of a king and his mother was the daughter and sister of kings.

It is central if you divide the country in 5 or more (N, S, W, E, C and double combinations of first 4) but if you divide it to two, it has to be in the west or east (or north and south but that division isn't as popular as west and east but if you were to divide Europe south and north, Hungary would be in southern Europe even though if doesn't seem like it and it actually is a good example of what i am trying to say, nice) and among those two it is definitely east
