It makes sense that they're brown, considering that they don't live in an environment with grass and dirt. It also makes sense that emperor penguin chicks are white, black, and gray, since they live in an icy environment.

I don't remember for sure, but it seems to me they did not give him any. I'm guessing they had not been out feeding at sea for several hours and didn't have any food in their stomachs to give.

The chicks can't swim in the ocean until after they lose their downy feathers. Those fluffy feathers get water-logged and they will get too cold. They rely on their parents to bring them food for almost a year until they get their adult feathers.

Good question. From what I've seen, it seems that on occasion another parent might feed a chick, but that is not common. The parents will typically want to save their hard-earned food for their own chicks.

Is there physical appearance strictly Environmental? Where they live should not affect them that significantly. I'm confused as to why they don't look like parents. Baby looks like he has several fish swimming around in his belly

Wow, what a great question! I can't answer why they look so dramatically different, but you've certainly gotten me wondering. It's not really a survival strategy, since they have very few predators on land at this age. These brown downy feathers are meant to keep the chicks warm during the winter months, but why are they brown? I'm going to research that question. One thing about their size, though, is that during the winter the chicks may only get fed 5 or 6 times during that entire period. They have to have plenty of fat reserves to make it through that long, cold winter. This is the same across their entire range, by the way -- in regards to their plumage and their life cycle.
