Hunter even said it himself in an interview of why you shouldn't idolize him! Just type in "Hunter Thompson interview", the interviewer says "I come to you knowing only from your writing..", Hunter breaks in, "Well that's a very profoundly personal commentary on your perception, if I were you I'd flee after saying something like that". Meaning, how can you idolize me when you only know me from my writing? Idolize their writing, not the person. Straight from HST's mouth.
@guidadiehl91766 жыл бұрын
People don't idolise the writing and theydl don't even idolise Hunter, they idolise the cartoon character they saw in Fear and Loathing and project that onto everything else. "Haha he's so CRAAAAZY man, Fear and Loathing was like a DOCUMENTARY. HAHAHA he just mentioned acid again!!! It's awesome when he talks about DRUGS!! I bet he was tripping in this bit!!! Hunter's the best!! LOL i wonder what kind of BONG he uses!!!" Hunter talks about it in this interview- how that persona was consuming him, the caricature was eclipsing his actual writing (particularly his journalism) and he couldn't live up to it. There's a reason why he became reclusive from his idiot fans. It affected his writing, too- from the mid '70s when he started begging Rolling Stone for coke because he "needed it to write". His writing deteriorated steadily; Songs of the Doomed, Better Than Sex, and Hey Rube are all pretty unimpressive, by that point he was disillusioned & fucked up & phoning it in. And people still worship it - the overly-drug-indulgent caricature which stunted his writing. They lap it up. They'd rather read (if they read at all...) 'Fear & Loathing in Elko' than 'The Temptations of Jean-Claude Killey', despite the latter being one of the best pieces of sports journalism ever written. "But he doesn't gobble opium & drive around screeching in a wild car in the Killey piece, so who cares!!! Haha!! I'm going to watch the bit where Hunter is totally incoherent on Letterman again!!! It's AWESOME seeing a talented writer act like a gibbering trainwreck on national television!!!! Drugs!!!!!!"

living up to that image was his own demise... r.i.p. brother
@subsamadhi10 жыл бұрын
No it wasn't. He was 67 when he died. He chose to end his life because he was tired of it. He lived up to the image but he couldn't do it anymore. So it didn't kill him. He outlived it.
@bigdaddyfrost42010 жыл бұрын
thnx 4 the imput, i'll just agree to disagree. :-)
@subsamadhi10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, whatever. If his "image" killed him, he would have gone out in some wild manner. He decided to end his life due to his age and infirmities, which come to anyone in old age. He always maintained that he wanted to commit suicide, that had nothing to do with his image, and everything to do with his personal beliefs.
@ericmcclain186910 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply, but his image that he tried to live up to didn't kill him. Hunter killed himself because he was convinced the fun was over. His suicide note mentioned that basically the fun was over and that he had became nothing more than a grumpy old man. Something that he was totally against. He was a very intelligent and down to earth man to just let his vices get the best of him like that. In my opinion, I would say that Hunter thought the next step in his life was a nursing home. Robin Williams took his life a few weeks ago and he was just a few years younger than Hunter was when he killed himself. I would say Robin Williams demise was due to his vices, but not Hunters.
@subsamadhi9 жыл бұрын
Eric Robin Williams didn't have as many vices as Hunter S. Thomspon. I've read that Robin WIliams didn't want to get old either, so that's the reason he did himslf in. I totally identify with this. Getitng old sucks. I am not a fan.
