Hunter speaks on changes to Michigan’s deer hunting season

As hunting season draws closer, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wants hunters to be aware of new regulations impacting the fall 2024 season.

The real problem in Michigan is deer are few on state land. But private land is over populated and deer have adopted to living in the subdivision. Farmers complain about crop damage but don't look for hunters to hunt there land. Many have insurance on crops also.

Most farmers don't own the land they are farming. We have a 40 acre farm that is planted every year. The farmer isn't getting block permits for my property as I won't allow it. And I'm certainly not letting strangers on my land as it's my home. But we manage our herd the best we can. We cannot control the neighbors.

@knuckledragger2412 sounds like you manage your land. Do you have a crop damage problem? If you are the food source the deer will come bait ban does not help you either. Your neighbors should not be strangers letting them help with over population is a win win situation.

I hunt, my wife, my daughter, my son, my two grandsons, my son in law. We really do have it covered. Proper management does not include killing every slightly mature doe. We let bucks walk to get bigger. We are about 3 to 1 ratio. But we can't control the neighbors who have bigger parcels.

As sportsman? How about as sportsman you teach your new hunters to harvest a doe instead of walking out and dropping the biggest buck in a bachelor group. How about making it antlerless for the youth hunts...teach them to harvest for the right reasons

Hey, I have an idea how about a one buck rule for three years. That will do 2 things more does will be shot plus if mich had better quality bucks it would bring other hunters from other states here to mich. But the state of mich will never do that they can't give up the coin. I really think it is all about the dollar not the deer problem.

At the same time.. in my area if there 40 people hunting the same 1000 acres I'm hunting .. and we all kill just even 5 deer each bucks or does .. the deer population will be gone in no time.. this is the issue with regulations created by a group of people that the citizens of the state didn't vote for .. the natural resources commission should be banned from making permitted decisions on our resources in the state of Michigan. The natural resources commission is not the Department of Natural Resources

They work for us, the liberals democrats running the dnr, no science. Rule out they butt's, why does the governor get too pick person head of the dnr every time elected,?? That's how burcrates do as they want! The baiting & feeding is no difference then food plot? If you spread put clover bails your 30 yard × 30 yards. No science behide the dnr, it's about trying too control & righting fines too the ones that pay you , feed you, that's why the hunters numbers down& no way there is 1.7 million deer in mich! If the DNR wants hunters back. More than tripling the price has helped that immensely. Also the new "smart phone requirement" is also a massive kick starter for increased hunter numbers I am sure. Then again I suppose the massive doe slaughter they ran in the name of "TB control" combined with bait bans instead of common sense limitations helped tons more. just a few of the totally intelligent decisions the MDNR has done in recent memory. That we need far much more of to continue to bolster those hunter numbers. Hey maybe next they can institute a safer friendlier hunt by banning all guns and bows. Then they could reinstitute the caveman hunt style of only using spears and clubs for those "traditionalist hunters". Just a few thoughts :).

It would help if that used science and not car insurance numbers. There are hundreds of deer on utility companies large tracks of land and the adjoining farmers are being eaten out of house and home.

Can't eat antler dude. The reason zone 2 and 3 have population explosions is because people will let 10+ does walk a season and on average they drop 2-3 fawns. Car accidents numbers have gone up and whitetail deer are still responsible for more deaths than any animal in the US. Learn proper management

DNR Agents have become revenuers instead of friends to the hunter. They should be encouraging the people that pay their salaries instead of trying to bust people on technicalities- like leaving the woods in the dark with a loaded gun. It is safer to unload at your vehicle than trying to do it with a flashlight in the woods.

The biggest bucke I've ever seen was on state land . I now own 40 acres ,lucky to see an 8 point in both gun and bow season. Neighbors live by the old saying " if it's brown it's down " so sad ! Even fawns . The DNR don't know what there doing . Not to mention charge for the successful hunters patch. I would rather give my hard earned money to someone selling it at a fle market than to the DNR.

I think it opens them up to litigation over discrimination. It also will reduce hunter recruitment. There was no need for a change. We had more hunters than last year but harvested less deer. That's telling me we have less deer than the DNR estimates. With hunter attrition happening in the Midwest it doesn't make sense to reduce hunter recruitment by changing regulations on the liberty hunt that appears extremely discriminate to youths and more importantly those with disabilities. Also with a late antlerless January hunt many bucks who have dropped their antlers and button bucks will be harvested by mistake. Even if you shot a doe, most likely you couldn't stomach looking and realizing you shot several deer by the fetus or fetus's they are carrying. Breeding starts in September so figure it out.

Problem is fathers are not taking their boys out hunting fishing and camping any more they are tree hugers staying on their cell phones or computers on their video games the old school Hunter is becoming distinct. Deer population is increasing which in return is more diseases car accidents and other things

They need to revert the Liberty and Independence hunts back to harvest either a doe or buck. These are hunters with disabilities and most of us cant pack our gear like a non-disabled hunter can. I feel like the MI DNR doesn’t care about us and its sad that they think by changing these 2 special hunts that itll help as these 2 hunts only accounted for about 2% of all bucks harvested in 2023. Maybe if they say during rifle season you can only harvest a doe only lets see what the masses would say then. This is the only time a lot of these hunters get a chance to harvest a buck is during these 2 special hunts and I feel a lot of these disabled hunters might not want to hunt anymore. It’s sad that the MI DNR is doing this to disabled hunters it’s not right.

Doe only during youth...that will get them out there...😮my daughter has been on the youth hunt for 4 years know and been successful...she helps with does also. But common got almost 4 months to help with that ... terrible choice

Great choice. Have too many people that "go out with their kids" but they're actually solo adults. Also teaches kids management over trophy's. Can't eat antler. Also curious if you feel the same about muzzleloader season being opened to all legal firearms? The doe only youth is actually one of their better decisions. Should work on public access and lowering tag prices. Doe tags going to $5 would help a lot as well.

I'm originally from the sotheast hunted for the last 50 years in north florida south Georgia and alabama. I now have a summer cabin in the UP and return to Florida after the modern rifle season in Michigan Although their are some farmers who need crop deprivation permits in the southeastern states I've not been aware that that is such a big problem in the south as it is in lower michigan. The modern rifle season in the states i hunt in the south is around 6 to 8 weeks long the bow season is about the same lenght muzzle loader is about 2 weeks long. Realistically the most efficient and humane way to take a deer is rifle or for those who are afraid of rifles is shotgun slug. I'd be glad to hear other peoples opinions on lenghtening seasons and/or effective methods of taking your deer

Logic and reason have no place in government! DNR says they want more deer taken, and want to bring in new hunters...yet... 1. Raise tag prices 2. Make you buy a small game lic. before you can buy deer tags 3. Ban baiting 4. Add another step, by requiring you to report any deer harvested. 5. Take away from youth/disabled vets. The only really effective thing they've done to meet their goal, is allowing the use of crossbows (for anyone) during bow season. Basically a short range rifle! I will give at least some credit. At least the rules aren't a "one size fits all" for the WHOLE state. Ya can't really break it down on a per-parcel basis. On my 10 acres, I might see a few deer the last week of Oct-1st week of Nov. I can't afford to waste my time on it, since the bait ban. The property at the other end of the road(1.5 acres, 1/2 mile away) is seeing 5-20 deer every evening.

Sadly last season was my very last it too expensive to buy tags equipment too not get on one deer! And time during the fall is valuable. for being on public lands ive got tierd of people stealing my tree stands cameras and people being in my stands with out asking when my name number is on my shit or even getting in to verbal altercations ive spent lots of time and money past summers for it all to be ruined. people buring out my spots burning em out list goes on ive loved the sport and still do but i am tired

It's funny that alot of people really haven't seem to have caught on yet. The point in the rule and tag changes over the past 10 years or so is because they are trying to kill the deer population off. While some areas might still be decent, this over abundance of doe tags and hunting has the deer population down to less than a 1/3 of what it was 20-30 years ago. Kill a buck, you just kill 1 deer, kill a doe you kill every baby she's every going to have. So you want better hunting, it's simple unless you really need the meat, quit shooting 2-3 does every season! Teach your kids to do the same cause it's part of being a hunter, teaching the next generation how to conserve and hunt properly. Then in a few years things will start to recover! Cause DNR isn't going to fix anything for you.....
