HxH start is slow but once it heats up it gets really good really fast. The action and fights are top tier too but thats not its main focus.

if u compare it to other shounen in terms of "fights" scenes - then yes it's "slow" per se. but the first few arcs are not about fights. togashi wanted us to see that there are other ways to tell a shounen story even more satisfying than fights. it showcase alot of ingenuity creativity and heart for each character that we've now grown to love deeply in the last arcs. :)

It's more of the other Togashi manga. Kishi credits Togashi's other work Yuyu saying the sharingan stemmed from seeing Hiei's Jagan. The massacre/coup plot is basically the same as Ogata Shuma Hiroyuki coup. His name is based on Sasuke Sarutobi(both in show and out of show) who traveled with a female companion named sakura. "where the main character Jiraiya actually has the Sharingan. Kishimoto decided to take the concept of the Sharingan from this story and create the Uchiha clan to give the Sharingan to." So its a mix of inspirations, some which were explicitly stated, and some others that may be true but aren't necessarily. The Hunter Exams Forrest to the Forest of death would be the thing I'd guess as the most likely inspiration from Hxh specifically.

It's based off Ogata Shuma Hiroyuki who had special eyes called, shockingly, the sharingan who were slaughtered in a coup d'etat. He then sought vengeance and learned ninjutsu. Kishi does reference Oda's work (Hiei's Jagan) as an inspiration for dojutsu in particular, but kurapika really isn't related to sasuke much at all.

The beginning seems slow but think of it as the learning stage or an introduction to the world of HxH which is based in it's own world. I have a lot of favs in HxH but Killua is #1. You'll see why later. This anime has storyline, character development, epic fights, and more. It's one you won't mind re-watching again later. I've lost track of how many times I've re-watched it. One thing I will say is if there's something you don't understand or makes you say "what the hell was that" or "how the hell..." it will get explained later.
