The fact that Chimera Ants arrived at a country like NGL, which has no technology or army, making it the perfect place for ants to evolve, was way too convenient. What Parker says there is a logical conclusion, it’s what most writers would be aiming for by introducing that family, as well as a cheap way to emotionally manipulate the audience without having to take time to truly build up characters, emotions and tension. …..but Togashi is superior to most writers and that’s why YuYu Hakusho and Hunter x Hunter are top tier stories. The main point of all of that was not actually to make us not like the ants or show us how dangerous they are as Parker stated. Those points are also achieved and that does matter (though not in the way Parker meant it) but his true goal was to build a backstory for a character who we get to witness develop throughout the course of the arc (as well as another point but it’s too spoilery so I won’t mention it) and it also has ripple affects throughout the entire arc leading all the way to the decisions that both human and ant characters make all the way at the end of the arc. It’s absolutely fantastic writing and the way Togashi takes his time with it all and sticks closely to his central themes from start to finish is a thing of beauty. I love all of the arcs but I feel this is where he really flexed his creative might.

Yorknew is still my favourite anime arc (Chimera Ant can get a little slow paced) but yeah this arc is brutal. Poor kids. This arc is long and chaotic and in unfamiliar territory. For me, it's pretty much like being trapped in a nightmare. HxH has been dark all along, but this is very much 'in your face'.

What you have to remember about the ants is that they're still animals who do the things they do for primitive and instinctive reasons. Most people watch this arc assuming the ants are just the bad guys who are evil. But its actually way more complex

People are too one sided and biased with perceptions of good and evil. All about the shallow shit too that they use to define either side. There is NO good in the universe if wild animals are evil for eating to survive. It's not until humans are eaten that they do it to cause suffering for fun.

They're one of the earliest to show humanity and the lives they had as humans before they were reincarnated. You really brought this to me like the koala was a wild and normal koala. He isn't. That being said, the vast majority of the ants were just mindless killing machines as problem by the chain of command. That's why he didn't care at all that killua is one of the most prolific killers in the entire series and neither do YOU. you just think he's a cool cute kid that's a badass sometimes but he literally killed his whole life for money. Money that almost no one In their world or ours would say is enough to equal the value of a human life. Yet he did it all the time. Without remorse and without hesitation. He even says as much in the show how most of the people that he's killed for pennies on the dollar were completely innocent and didn't deserve it. People born in war zones or during times of war have a completely different view of good and evil than some shmuck who never has to worry about killing a woman or a child with a loaded gun pointed at them so that they can live. Would you call them evil? You'd call them good or evil based on which side you support. How about real life and how MILLIONS of innocent CIVILIANS were SLAUGHTER ED by Americans just by the association of being the same race or living in the same country or fitting the look of what Americans think are terrorists. They had a 9/11 happen every single day for them for YEARS. Gons perception of good and evil is based entirely in selfishness. If he likes them because they did something for him then he let's them go and THANKS them in the most polite way possible even if they're mass murderers and cannibals. You remember our scissors friend. The best argument you could probably make for evil is people or animals that torture for fun or revenge but that AGAIN is based in whether you like the person committing the torture and that's without ANY consideration of what the person that they're doing it to did. Your definition of good and evil is weak and always changing. Not reliable and not consistent. It's all biased and selfish.

"How much time has passed?" oh what a question for this arc :D The one thing that's really intresting about Togashi's writing is the horror he's bringing forward. But when you really break it down, are the ants doing anything malicious? Are we impacted by this natural selection viewed through the lens of a humans being eaten? The writing is mastercrafted to make you feel and twist your feelings around!
