Never a big fan but one night, it must have been 1985, we went to see them. Right up against the stage and Mark Seymour talking to us (why?) between songs. The band was on fire. Great memory.

This song and video freaked me out as as a kid. Intense. And the bass is from another world.

This song was actually partially banned in the US. This song wound up on a flexi in a magazine distributed in the US, but the label had wiped out “Hunters and Collectors” and the song title and replaced it with “DO NOT PLAY THIS SIDE”. A friend thought it meant it would wreck the turntable stylus if it was played - but eventually gave in and we found an actual (unknown) song. Evidently the ban was due to a dispute with the record company and the magazine/label refused to promote the band, who also never toured the states, and their videos were never played on MTV. They were a banned band… and banned to this day.

Yup, I was a subscriber to Trouser Press magazine and I got the flexi- disc with some stupid comedy routine on the A side and this gem that we "weren't supposed to play". 😂
@timstamps5281 Жыл бұрын
I still want to know why they were banned in the US.
@matsl8654 Жыл бұрын
They did tour the US. In 1990 they opened up for Midnight Oil on their US tour. I saw them at Radio City in NYC, sadly few people in the audience paid much attention to H&C and were just waiting for the Oils. H&C performed When the River runs dry on Dave Lettermans show that same year
@timstamps5281 Жыл бұрын
@@matsl8654 H&C should have been given more airplay. MTV should have at least played a music video often.

It was great that Mtv needed all the video clips so this song had some decent exposure and I was lucky to catch it back then. The whole record is great but this song is haunting and stands out. Good stuff

There was a lot of interesting primal bass line driven music and film clips coming out around this time. Psychic TV & Shreikback were other bands forming this genre. You'd almost brand this stuff 2nd wave "industrial" music.
