When we lived in California there was a nearby cattle and goat ranch. The owner hunted everything with a Marlin .22 bolt action rifle with a 2x7 scope. He even killed cattle and goats with it. But he was accurate with that rifle and knew the .22 LR's trajectory perfectly to be able to put bullets where they needed to be.

22 large, 17 heavy? LMAO! Good hunt boys. We just went out shooting hogs with PCP air rifles. My .35 cal FX impact drops them in their tracks. You need to try hog hunting with PCP air rifles it's so much fun. They don't get as spooked so you can take out 3 or 4 at a time with a silencer on the air gun. It sounds like a squirrel fart, lol.

Some people say a 22lr is not big enough I say shoot them a inch above the eyes and you can drop them in there tracks I've used a 177 cal air gun and still drop that 120lb boar

.22 knocks them down easily so does my .22 air rifle. All head shots. You must have bad luck. They are not hard to penetrate if shot in the head right in front of the ear. A .22 long has excellent penetration because of the small diameter. You only need 35 to 40 ft-lbs to enter the brain.

first one was in its neck or lower head and it dropped. then it sat up like a dog and i hit it square in the face and one in the neck area. it started crawling and i hit it in the top of the head and it kept going. finally i put one last round through the side of its head and it stopped moving. I've had a Savage 93R17 GV for about 2 months. I've killed 10 pigs up to about 80 pounds live weight with it at distances out to 50 yards stone cold-dead during that time, using just ten cartridges to do it. I hunt pigs on a particular 15,550 acre Game Management Area open to public hunting. Pig hunting is legal there. Carrying anything but a shotgun with loose-shot ammo of size #4 or smaller, or a RIMFIRE rifle or handgun is not. Not my rules. I just follow them. I'm not hunting pigs in order to save the world from some existential threat. I'm in it for the meat. I like pork. Here, the phrase "serve yourself and save" applies. By the pound, it is cheaper for me to spend $25.00 on gas and $0.30 per .17 HMR shot for "organic, free range" pork than its for me to buy the same weight of pork in the supermarket. And walking in the woods is a lot more fun than bumping carts with "heifers" at Walmart is. As I am very selfishly shooting for my own table, I prefer to shoot pigs of 80 pounds or less on the hoof. I'm not too proud to squeeze the trigger on the little guys no bigger than a 45 pound average Arizona javelina is. That's the size I prefer to shoot. I use CCI FMJ 20 grain ammo. Since I don't shoot big pigs, I don't just head-shoot them. If they're average javelina-size, I'll heart/lung them on a broadside shot as an alternative. Contrary to popular opinion, the FMJ doesn't drill a .172" hole but after about 6" to 8" of penetration, it exhibits "terminal yaw" just like 55 grain FMJ from a 5.56 NATO does, and with a shockingly similar effect of turning lungs into liquid goo. It doesn't make holes for much a blood trail, but since it drops 'em near enough on the spot, that's largely irrelevant. I say "head shots are preferred" but when I say that, I'm not saying I'm aiming for the head. I'm aiming for a specific SPOT on the head. I used to hunt suburban cottontail rabbits a lot with a .177 spring piston air rifle and while I would say "head shots are preferred," I'd actually be shooting at a specific spot behind the eye and below the rabbit's ear. Pig hunting with a .17 HMR is just a slightly super-sized version of that. A .177 pellet hitting with 6 foot pounds of force will shoot completely through a fully grown blacktail jackrabbit's head on that "behind the eye and below the ear" shot. With the right aerodyanic pellets, my sub 12 foot pound muzzle energy would hit harder than that at 50 yards. I need my .20 grain .17 HMR bullet to hit with 65 ft lbs of force to shoot through a pig's skull. It can deliver that "power" at distances I wouldn't even try to shoot a pig at. If you had to shoot a pig in the head 5 times in order to kill it with a .308, you weren't hitting it in the right spot or you'r bullets were too frangible at the impact velocity you hit them with. It happens. When I was a licensed guide in California, I had a client shoot a pig three times in the head at 75 yards with a .25-'06 without killing it. The problem there was a combination of just aiming for the head generally and using 87 grain bullets at basically exploded on impact, leaving very gory surface wounds with virtually no penetration at all. That's not an issue I have shooting pipsqueak 20 grain .172" FMJ bullets out of a 26,000 PSI .17 HMR case.
