No animal reflects human social changes as much as the dog. For millennia, Dogs have served as mankind’s hunting buddies, vital companions in our struggle for survival. In today’s increasingly civilized world, modern dogs have had to Abandon their first instincts, finding new employment as family members, helping the disabled, diagnosing cancer, or sniffing for drugs. We have forgotten what it actually means to be a dog, a hunter. "Hunting Buddies" looks back at this part of our cultural history and discovers where dog skills come from, finding out what we have given up and gained as our relationship with dogs has changed. Different hunting dogs are followed in real-life situations seen from dog and human perspective. Each breed emerged from a specific period in hunting history, when each was supremely adapted to the tasks and skills required. "Hunting Buddies" takes a closer look at dog and man, nature and culture - a cinematic cross-over appealing not just to hunters and dog-lovers but to anyone fascinated by the history and development of humankind.

Bonding with dogs not only changed them, but us too. Both dogs and humans evolved increased oxytocin through this process. I often wonder if they were our advantage over other human species.

Dogs were used in war , some even wore armor. Irish wolfhound’s hunted and killed wolves, they ( wolves) were Eating lambs, sheep, cattle so we bred big dogs to kill them or make them move on . The Romans brought over Rottweilers. Asians ( don’t judge me ) brought little dogs like Pugs and Pekingese . But I digress…. we bred dogs to help us in wars and as home security long before keeping them as pets so yes they will have signs of being hurt. I might add that if they have signs of being hurt and then heeled they had to have gotten some kind care.

The only reason dogs and wolves are genetically different species is because dogs became close to humans and developed the ability to digest starches like us. This means that the reasons dogs exist is because of their partnership with humans.

As long as dog breeders/showers keep breeding them for exaggerated physical traits instead of for the skills they were initially bred for we will get further and further from the what the breeds of dogs were initially. Many breeders think they are somehow preserving the breeds of dogs. They are distorting them and will eventually turn them into something else entirely, thereby destroying them :(

It was not just about hunting as this otherwise interesting documentary suggests. Yes, it was also about hunting, but there were many other factors too. Dogs are intelligent and also social animals that are devoted to and protective of their group. Once attached to humans, as some wolves did become early in this evolutionary process, they served as valuable guards against any intruders, human or otherwise. They also have an instinctive organizational ability, so they became herders, both protecting and keeping in order herds of value to humans, from sheep to cows. And of course, their devotion and communication with those they view as their masters made for good leisure company for humans. It's a multi-varied story, the relationship between humans and dogs. But I suspect the first point of contact between wolves and humans that led to this relationship was the personal one, the devotion that humans found in these wolves, and the instinctual guarding they provided. And only after that the hunting.
@alicecuriosityoftenleadsto6288
@alicecuriosityoftenleadsto6288 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Their protective behavior towards others in their pack and ability to warn us of dangers like predators and enemies was probably noticed as soon as we brought home the first cub and bonded with it. Only after that would we have discovered all the other things they could do.

...And now I understand my historical romance novels better than ever! I did not have any clue how grand a French hunting lodge could be. I actually figured it would be something rustic, of logs, although as richly appointed inside according to the wealth of the characters who were nobles or royalty. Your little video has let me in on a few details that have given me a world of understanding of even though authors that I read - some of whom are history buffs who've read the diaries available from Queen Elizabeth l.

Why does everybody get the fox breeding story wrong? They bred two groups - one for friendliness to man, tameness: and one group for hostility and abersion. When the research lost it's funding, the researchers could not bear to put down the "domesticated" foxes, and so they were comserved, at great effort, by the researchers. Note that the hostile foxes were just put down - big shock.

The original Turkish koban kopegi- mainly karabash ("black-masked" in translation), known as kangal has a wolf-like head and sometimes IS crossed with a wolf by the shepherds. Modern German shepherd dog has nothing to do with its original type- that slopped back hinders working all day long, everyday. Puppies open their eyes NOT when they are a month old, but around 10-14 days of life, and their ears open at the same time. In a month they are walking without difficulty. Taste buds develop... I don't know- aren't they already developed??? Either way, it is not the taste buds that are important- the emerging of the teeth is... They do depend the most on smell, BUT not the sighthounds. Those dogs have sight as their most developed sense. Bloodhounds are used in searching for missing people. Not "labradors and retrievers", but: labrador retrievers and golden retrievers. Edit: There are a few more types or breeds (because it can be also a mixed dog- Labradoodle) of retrievers- flat coated retrievers, Curly coated retrievers and Chesapeake Bay retrievers to name a few, but only the 2 above (that are the most popular) were shown in this video, so I didn't mention there are others, at first.

Where can I find that stat? I'm not disagreeing, I've lived in two places my entire life, Cascade & Selkirk Mountains of WA State. Areas rich in large & small game species & have done some hunting myself. I've been tremendously unsuccessful in my outdoor adventures but I know many hunters & have heard the occasional story of one not being able to retrieve the animal. This however is quite rare, I would even say

I've hunted since I was eight or nine years old, and it is more like one percent of animals, which are wounded and not found. The hunting is rather different to the techniques used in this video, but in no case is it half of the quarry animals being wounded and escaping.

@kurzhaarsilva
@kurzhaarsilva Жыл бұрын
That's a good one. I saw a miniarure blue heeler maybe a year ago that looked like a Chihuahua with a blue heeler coat. Probably an artificial insemination with the smallest specimens but still freaky. I think breeding and and cross breeding was fun for our ancestors just like it's fun for some today. I can totally see it how you get from wolf to beagle or a corgi breeding genetic abnormalities. Still happening today with some breeds. As to to your original question there was a bit more happening when it comes to wolves, probably some other species and the wolves as we know them are the only ones that maintained original form and the others are dogs in our days. Europe is kinda funny that way with genetic deformaties when it was cool to do it to even people.

Not sure of the validity of your related to domestication of wolves but most researchers feel 30-35,000 years of domestication are behind us, not 15,000. DNA reversal sequencing suggests it might be as long as 50,000 years. Cats are at 7-8,000 years from wild stock and it's recentness shows.

@@cadeanderson422 I agree - pretty much every type of trapping in the U.S. at least is more humane than factory farms, which produces most meat that people eat. At least these animals got to live in their natural habitat before being killed. Trapping and hunting permits are also largely based on reducing overpopulation and invasive species. This results in a more sustainable future for the native animals in a region.
