What a great thing to collect, besides looking good hanging on the wall you can use it on a daily basis. We all have to eat, affordable and practical. I’ve gathered a lot, some from family, some bargain finds. Never thought of my cookware as a collection, I feel differently now, I Iike to think about all the family meals cooked in them.

Great info in your video. Correction on the Coors funnel- it was not used to strain hops. The Coors funnels and other porcelain type equipment were manufactured for laboratory use due to its resistance to chemicals and heat resistance. That funnel would have been used in a vacuum filtration technique, among other uses. Just FYI. Cheers,

I just got my first BS&R skillet. It's a #10 probably a century series. On the bottom at the 6 o'clock position it has a 10 with 12 7/16 in. above the 10. It sits perfectly flat and you can see all of the machining work or milling marks on the inside cooking surface. It's gonna steal some cooking time away from my go to #10's.

Not really sure but the gate mark implies from 1880-1910. Most bottom gate marked skillets are from the 1880s. The larger pieces may run up into the early 1900s.

Hi ive been watching a lot of your videos. We ended up with a bunch of cast iron pans the past few years. Ive been able to figure out what most of them are. There are a few that have funky handles. They're, for lack of a better word, hollow back handles. Most pans have solid nice fit in your hand handles. One in particular says wagner on the back barely readable from all the pitting. It also has the number 1057 no other letters after it. The bottom doesnt have a heat ring but the bottome is inset? Or from the inside it looks like theres a groove around the edge like a grease catcher? It does say made in usa as well. I have not been able to find another pan like it or any with handles like this one. So im curious if you may know anything about it. The pan is no good because its cracked but im very curious about it and some others we have. There are over 20 pans we've been derusting and trying to restore to get rid of them. If you can help id greatly appreciate any info. Thanks love your videos.

Have you ever sanded a spinner down to make it flat?
@castIroncookware5 жыл бұрын
I think that most of the time the pain will have to be fairly thick in order to be able to take away that much material to make it flat again. I have a few spinners in my collection and they are still usable, just a little touchy when using them. Especially on my glass top. Most of the time those get used inside the oven. I am just not a big fan of modifying pieces. I like to give them this close to Vintage as possible even with issues.

Could you comment on a first-generation ASW Sportsman grill? I have a complete one and I've been told it's in excellent condition. Thank you.
@castIroncookware5 жыл бұрын
I think that the Atlanta Stove Works was probably the first one. Birmingham Stove and Range apparently use the same design. Of course I think they were owned by the same people. There were quite a few generations of them. I think the early Generations had four legs and later they changed it to 3. I'm curious if yours has four or three legs. Lodge still makes them today. The Sportsman's Grill is not really one of my strongest knowledge pieces but they are awesome. I plan to learn more information about them.
@jean60615 жыл бұрын
Thank you for such a prompt reply. My old grill has four legs and no door to regulate the air coming into the firebox. I thought that may have been missing but I was told that no, it never had one. Later models had that sliding door. Mine has the fire grate and the cooking grate (which can be turned upside down if you want to cook closer to the coals) and a door with the name of the company that allows you to add more wood or charcoal. Oh - the early grills came with a fish fryer, an oval shaped shallow pan. It fits perfectly on top of the grate and the fryer's handles are large enough to allow the bale handle to slip through them. I don't have that fish fryer but I am definitely keeping my eyes open! I really appreciate your videos about cast iron. I have two small Wager Ware skillet, a Blacklock chicken fryer, and a square breakfast skillet. That Wager Ware skillets are my favorites. Love using them! Now, I'm looking for an older Dutch Oven. I am eager to do some Dutch Oven cooking. Take care!

@@jean6061 that is awesome. I have part of an old Atlanta Stove Works Sportsman's Grill. It is in bad shape with some broken pieces but I'm hoping to put it back together again and get it working. The one that I have has three legs so it's not quite as old as yours. Thank you for sharing.

Sure thing! I love the history behind it. I was advised to get a Lodge if I really want to use a Sportsman grill, that this one is too valuable! Here I was, thinking I had a combination grill and fire pit - and it was $15. Keep looking - there are definitely nice pieces to be had! Take care!

What years was the gate mark pieces made?
@castIroncookware5 жыл бұрын
Pre 1900. Most of them will be before 1890 but you will still see some of the larger pieces like ham boilers and cauldrons with gatemarks on up into the early part of the 1900's. There are still however gatemarks on all cast iron but they are on the side or edge. They are ground away in the finishing process. I suppose the best term to use for gate marked pieces would be bottom gate marked.

@@kimnguyen4958 the first ones were originally made what's the purpose of a sad iron heater for a laundry oven. Later on the laundry oven was modified to make the first Sportsman's Grill. That is when the griddles got deeper and became fish fryers.
