Thanks for your comments about 'back-stop' a crucial element to any safe stalk! However, as Baldrick Cocklin has already kindly pointed out, sadly we can not always get the cameraman in the same spot as the shooter and therefore a perfectly safe shot is not always portrayed by our camera angle.

I really hope that hunting with open sights will become the new trend, it is really a joy and a challenge. It is SO demanding and rewarding! :)

I actually plan on using open sights! I feel like my scoped .270 is just too fragile, the lightest bump sets the scope off.

I'm 76 years old so being "old school" is a given....that's why I can safely say the 7x57 is one of the world's greatest cartridges ever made. I just recently gave my Interarms Mark X (ten) in 7x57 to my grandson. Fantastic cartridge for deer and hog and most everything else here in the US. Fine a rifle as a man will ever hunt with. Thanks for sharing.

That is real hunting, 600m with a scope is just sniping with no bush craft required.

I’m so used to seeing larger deer here in America, with Whitetail bucks getting pretty big. It’s weird how big of a difference in size there are in different species of the same animal sometimes

Great video. After much practice at the range getting comfortable shooting offhand iron sights. I’ve recently taken my first fallow deer at 50 meters. I did this with my model 92 rossi puma. 20 inch barrel 44 magnum. The confidence I now have had inspired many shooters I know young and experienced. Pays to be competent with basic gear and fundamental marksmanship.

When I was a teenager, most people still hunted with irons. Irons put the responsibility of "hunting" on the hunter, anyone can shoot a deer from 200yds or greater with virtually any modern rifle and scope combination but having the skills to get within a 100yds or better... well, that what separates the gun owners from the hunters. Great video! PS - Watching you guys maneuver through the snow while carrying that gorgeous Rigby, arghhh! Beautiful piece of workmanship but I'd have found an inexpensive matte/synthetic to crawl along with, not a handcrafted $10K rifle. I understand that's what the rifle was made for but still... That hurt my soul. LOL!

I have a variation on my ticket to allow me to hunt with my muzzle loader, as you would imagine it's equipped with open sights. I have been out a few times with it but must say the sight picture is not as good as I would like and you are 100% right about time of day Great video

Iron sights can be highly effective even out to 300 yards. I zero my 30-06 about 3in high at 50 yards. With that zero I can hold the lower 1/3 of a deers vital area and be within the vital area out to about 300 yards.

Brilliant stuff, really interesting to see you going back to basics!, along a similar vein, with the scopes of today and their massive zoom ranges and horrendous price, can you go far wrong with a small fixed 6 power of European manufacture? I think not....

I thought this was more common and maybe I don't give myself enough credit, but I use iron sights all the time. Use buck shot or slug and have dropped deer up to 80 yards out. It's not hard, to be honest in some scenarios it's more practical than using scope

I noticed there were some buildings behind the animal when you shot it. I understand that it may have been the camera angle. Is that the case?
@peterjones4442
@peterjones4442 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment Ross - Sure is, as I have said before, the position of the cameraman is different to that of the shooter, added to which the buildings where in the region of half a kilometer away, with the shooter actually being presented with a very nice downward shot into plenty of clear soft earth. When stalking in populated areas like the south east of England backstop is always one of our primary concerns.

To be honest i have only had the privilege of using a scope a few times, it's pretty much always irons for me and many others in these parts of the mountains,you just simply don't have many shots far enough to warrant the need if you know your rifle well. However, in the last 10 years I have seen a huge uptick in modern hunters using optics of various kinds around here, I guess I'm just stuck in my old ways but I'm not a typical hunter either I suppose I just try to keep my freezer full and food on the table aside from that I dont really go hunting.

A lot of hunting rifles don’t even come with iron sights anymore, which is a big contributor. And if you don’t want to use a scope there’s always the humble red dot sight.

i am getting into hunting and i plan to get a cheapish local milsurp rifle (m39) because i feel like a more modern rifle with a scope could fail me on a -30(celsius) forest/mountain stalk. High chanse of knocking the scope around etc. I have no actual experience with this tho, anyone have any thoughts? id like a scope but i hear alot about how easily they get knocked off zero.
@peterjones4442
@peterjones4442 Жыл бұрын
Hi A W. Depending on the distance that you will be shooting at, I would personally, invest in some good quality optics, provided you do that, a good scope shouldn't get knocked off zero and will be great for tough climates. Its the cheaper stuff that will invariable fail you. Buy once buy right.

Please enough histrionics about the backstop. Two points: 1. the camera angle is not the shooter's angle and as such will not give a true view as to the safety of the shot. 2. at 4:04 one can see the angle looks to be significantly downwards, and I expect there would have been ample backstop and no danger to the buildings visible in other parts of the film.
