Hunting for R211 subway cars in the wild!

The Four Foot

Күн бұрын

On a recent vacation, I found myself in New York City with not a whole lot of time to spare, but at the same time, not a whole lot of things that I see with what little free time I had. So, in a desperate effort to capitalize on the success of a previous video, I decided to go looking for the elusive R211’s, in the wild!
There are 3 types of R211 cars that will be produced between the two Kawasaki Factories. The cars you see here are R211 type A’s. The majority of the R211 order are A type cars. There will also be R211’s built called the type S. The cars you see here are not type S cars. Type S cars are called that, because they will be used on the Staten Island railway, and will replace the R44’s. The final type of R211’s produced will be known as type T’s. Again, the cars you see here are Type A’s, not Type T’s. The type T cars, which are not being shown in this video, because they do not yet exist, will feature open gangways and will have no doors separating the cars.
Thanks for watching, and be sure to subscribe for more updates!

Lol, I live here, but that would be intense dedication. Particularly since those 2 five car sets are basically like groundhogs that never want to come outside. Most of the time that I drive by the factory, they’re inside, which is why I thought there was a chance they had already shipped.

They will likely shipped by truck as the last subway cars shipped to any transit property by rail were the WMATA 1k cars back in the 1970s. The WMATA cars were loaded on 85' TOFC cars and required a 400' long simi permanent ramp to load them and unload them. A lowboy truck trailer only requires 60' ramp that is setup and broken down quickly. I may be wrong but I believe the last subway cars shipped to a transit property on their own wheels were the R-33s.

Props to you for venturing that far into Queens - most people wouldn't have even made it to 207th St yard that far uptown. As you alluded to, there are parts of Queens that make you forget that you're in Queens - much less NYC. Next time you're in town, you should take a ride on the LIRR Port Wash line and get off at Little Neck. Head north on foot (towards Little Neck Bay / LI Sound) and check out the neighborhood and the parks. All still within city limits, all still Queens. On your way back to Penn, get off at Bayside and check out the restaurant / bar scene on Bell Blvd - rivals anything in Manhattan. Finally, for railfanning, go to Mets-Willets Pt (also on the Port Wash and the 7 train), where you can watch 1) the 7 train, 2) Corona Yard where the 7 train sleeps, 3) the Port Wash line (obviously), and 4) Flushing Meadows.

Will do! I have been to Mets/willets pt on a previous trip...definitely a transit example all cities should have to try an replicate when building stadium districts! On that previous try I stayed at an apartment in the Bronx and it was really nice to experience a not so touristy part of the city (yes I know that the most cliche description of any Airbnb experience, but I digress). Thanks for the advice!

Keep the same design but make them for Numbered Lines the result is R262. Remember some subway trains have an IRT small size design and larger BMT/IND Loading Gauge size. The following are R27 R30 BMT/IND became IRT R28,36ML R33WF R33ML R36WF & R29s the first one to set this trend was R1-9 R10s BMT/IND which became IRT R12 BMT/IND R16 became the basis for IRT R17 R21 & R22s

At some point, with the 8th Avenue CBTC coming in, there will also be another swap with Coney Island, taking all 90 of their R160s in exchange for their R46 cars going to Coney Island Yard. That’s another 90 cars making up an additional 9 10-car trains for Coney Island. All together, that’s 22 10-car trains for the C.

@TheFourFoot
@TheFourFoot 3 жыл бұрын
Nothing has been made (that I know) for the west. The Kawasaki factory in Lincoln primarily makes vehicles like ATV’s and motorcycles. I don’t know much about the history, but it opened in 1976, making it the oldest foreign owned auto manufacturing plant in the US. It likely opened here because of tax incentives (and Nebraska has historically not had a high percentage of unionized labor) but it may have had something to do with the fact that Cushman vehicles were also manufactured here. While I don’t know if management considered this before opening a factory here, the fact is that Cushman was bought and the factory closed, while Kawasaki is still here. The KHI portion of the factory opened in the early 2000’s, so they’ve been making rail cars for less than 2 decades in Lincoln.

@@TheFourFoot I see thanks for the reply....so makes sense that they continue making MTA cars in that facility as the workforce has almost 20 yrs experience doing so. I read somewhere that the NY MTA supports businesses all across the US and now I see exactly how....the supply chain into that Nebraska factory must draw from many states to produce a final product. I'm a frequent rider of those products so it's real interesting to learn about their provenance. I'll bet it's a hoot to watch those NYC subway cars roll by on flatbeds towards their final destination.

The open gangway makes it easier to do so in the rare event of a smelly person. You don’t have to wait until the train arrives at the next station. Rather, walk over to the next car while the train is in motion.

@@androidtexts6948 Those early trains are fine. Again, it’s a minor issue. Plus other cities have open gangway trains, so why not NY? Plus the real way to solve any homeless issues is to build more affordable housing, not rejecting a design that works all over the world.

@TheRailLeaguer
@TheRailLeaguer 3 жыл бұрын
That joke of yours is getting too old Plus why would you want these train cars to fail? 75 of the cars will be equipped with cab signaling for the Staten Island Railway, which desperately needs new cars after other plans floundered. *The other 440 of them will possibly be assigned to the A route to replace the R46 and equip the A with NTTs for the 8th Avenue CBTC. At this point, the A route will be 100% R211s. 20 train cars will be open gangway trains, which will run all over the system. At that point, the option orders of 640 cars, followed by 437 cars, will be open gangway cars, with most cars being assigned to the N and Q routes.
