This video features free range sambar deer feeding in a blackberry thicket filmed from a treestand. You will see the advantage that can be gained by being elevated over habitat that would be impossible to hunt at ground level.
It shows how sambar deer communicate and interact with each other when they pick up a scent that they associate with danger.

Gday Noel, loved this footage and your insight into treestands, I have been trying to decide whether to buy one and your video got me over the line and convinced me, I ordered one straight away after watching it. Loved watching the behavior of that stag too and your commentary. Cheers!

Greetings from your old Wang' hunting mate Bill Pearson. I've hung up the rifle a decade ago, but after all the stalking I did here and overseas nothing matches the challenge of those Sambar in the Vic. high country - which I miss so much. Living in Sambar country and hunting every second weekend for seven years I got to know and hunt with most of the most respected experts on them - and I can tell you Noel is without question the greatest and most knowledgeable one I ever knew... a guy who finds a cast antler, then searches & finds the other one - then searches and finds that deer the next year, films it, then nails it. He tracks deer by their footprints like a friggin' bloodhound. Great to see this video of yours. Love to see one showing the tree stands themselves, and you talk us through the pros & cons of each. My channel is Bill's Build & Race mate if you wanna see the old phart these days... I'm into building my own house (which at last has a big trophy room), building race cars, and competing them. I became a pro full time taxidermist after I left Wang', won SCI national awards, but am retired now & 72.

Hi Bill I lost track of you once you shifted away from Wang. Being a 72 year old Dinosaur myself I am totally new to this KZbin game. I started watching Videos on my phone back in April to fill in time whilst my wife had Chemo treatment in Albury. Some time back my grandson loaded one up for me called "Calling in a sambar stag" so people could hear noise that my home made sambar calf caller makes, as I had written an article on how to make one for the Australian Deer Hunter magazine. After watching KZbin a fair bit I decided to load some on, as I have hundreds of hours of footage that I'm sure hunters would be interested in. I had a look at your channel and it looks like you have been doing it for some time, well done. I'm not into social media, I have a phone to make phone calls and to now watch KZbin, been too busy living the dream hunting and fishing. I've made 9 deer hunting DVDs on all of the deer species in Australia except the Hog deer, with 4 on my favorite the sambar. Keep up the good work Bill, Cheers Noel.

@@NoelOConnor I just bought a motion triggered video/stills trail camera for just $37 delivered. A clever guy with your knowledge of Sambar routes and wallows would get world first footage with a couple of those. You can leave them out there for months. 100% waterproof. Auto infra red for night footage too.

@@BillsBuildandRace Thanks for the Info Bill, I have 2 Doug Read homebrew trail cameras that work well that are capable of capturing video footage but I only use them for photos as I prefer to capture the video footage my self by hand. I intend to upload a video to KZbin of sambar deer wallowing that I have filmed including some great stuff from a treestand.

I agree with my namesake. Thanks for an informative and thought provoking production. As only need to walk off my property and I'm in highly populated state Forest, tree 'standing' makes a lot of sense logistically. And what a ripper stag! Great footage.

Hey Noel great footage ! back when I was bow hunting I used a climbing tree stand quite a bit on some good private land I had access to. Some of the experiences I had whilst sitting 15ft up a tree were quite remarkable! Just to have deer so close you could here them chewing was awesome and one time I had a hind sniffing my rope that I had attached to the stand to pull up my bow with.

I do a lot of tree stand/ladder stand hunting the last few years. Some spot and stalk on pigs and coyotes. I'm 71 years old so I take it easy anymore. We can use feeders here in Texas to draw the animals in. Sitting about 18 feet up you can see a lot of nature taking place. Plus the part I like as an old bowhunter is you can usually take the time and be be very selective on the shot angle. Getting a good clean kill is the objective. I've killed coyotes, deer, wild hogs, bobcat and raccoons from ladder stands.
