By that time frame, we were all wearing a mixture of M81 and the new ABU (tan/grey tiger stripes). Our group was "caught" by OPFOR instructors wearing Multicam. They got mad when they couldn't find me even though I was an arms length beneath them, not moving and looking like a small boulder. I never forgot that lesson especially considering how worthless the ABU was in that environment!

I keep a small camo veil in a jacket pocket instead of carrying camo face paint. It's hot as hell during the summer in Pennsylvania and I sweat a lot so paint doesn't last long when I apply it. I just drape it over myself if I'm stationary and it acts as a kill-flash so I don't have to buy an expensive cap from somebody like One Hundred Concepts. I can also remove it and use it as a small gear hide if I have to ditch equipment which is nice as well. Historically, veils saw a ton of use by German SS troops during WW2 and proved to be incredibly effective in stationary positions and emplacements.

Being backlit is also a camo killer. If you are facing your observer and your shadow is falling in front of you, you probably look like a solid human form. Another thing to look out for is the 2-D camo prints with 3-D camo imagery, where they'll have the pattern sewn into your garment upside-down, so that the shadow falls in the wrong direction.

I feel like digital woodland as close to Marpat as possible is slept on a lot. In the hills of Appalachia you have more roofed forests making everything a few shades darker and any type of multicam starts to stand out with the lighter colors. For my area multicam is reserved for walking the fields and treelines because once you get in the woods even at midday everything looks like it's always 7-8pm. Also an added bonus, digital camo looks sick when it isn't UCP.
@letsdothis9063

Yes. Marpat is the next uniform that I am looking for. I want the woodland, and the desert. I live in MS where the Delta and the hills meet. Woodland for the woods, and believe it or not, desert (maybe even that desert flectarn, not sure of its actual designation) works well in the Delta. There is a lot of gravel road and exposed dirt. If you are in between crop rows, you are on exposed dirt, and desert patterns work better than greens. Also fields don't always have live crops.

A missing part of this video is where hunting camo isnt designed to function. A big one is range. Most hunting camo patters are 200 yards and in because thats distances animals will spook easier. Take a lot of the darker Mossy Oak patterns and at 300 yards plus the pattern blacks out turning you into a clearly defined shape. Second is materials. Actual modern military camo is designed to operate under IR light where as a lot of hunting camo can white out under IR light when observed through NODs.

This can also apply in urban or otherwise human developed environments. A gray or similarly appropriate camo might help if you think your version of the end of the world calls for it but I'm also thinking of the all the days before then. Don't dress like a cowboy in a dense urban area, don't dress like a hipster in a very small town, don't dress like a stock broker in a very poor neighborhood. How you choose to groom yourself also factors in. Different hair and beard styles are more or less common in different places. Though I'm currently trying to see if I can catch ZZ Top so do as I say, not as I do.

Despite later seeing a different kind of service...the eye-opener for me was maybe 20+ years ago playing airsoft. It was a great example of how practical or impractical camouflage could be. I remember, almost without fail two things stood out: boots and guns. All the kids were wearing any camo they could find...then running basic black boots and black AEGs, etc. You'd see boots and black rifles moving around in the woods. That experience stuck with me into the later days.

In an airsoft environment you know you are sorrounded by "guns" and the human brain is very capable of picking up and recongnizing shapes and even possible shapes (meaning repeating patterns). So anything looking like a gun will catch your attention. It will be even easier if they're black since that color creates harder contrast with its background. Yes, I'm a camo nerd and play airsoft LOL

I've been on AD in the USAF for last 21 years which means I have now been issued 5 different camo patterns: BDUs, DCUs, ABUs, ACUs (not uniforms but gear like pouches and ponchos), and OCPs. I still have a few pieces of even the older stuff. For example, I still have BDU Gortex tops and bottoms. The old stuff is what I take hunting. The only 'hunting apparel' I wear is a cheap mesh mask I got on Amazon to cover my face and blaze orange during firearm season. 2 seasons ago, I shot a buck on opening season wearing that M81 Gortex. I couldn't get a firearms tag last season but I drew a tag to bow hunt a week in a state park. I was not in a free state last year and unfortunately, this was the best I could do. This place ended up being aweful for deer but I really tested how well old uniform items work for hunting and the answer is really well. I had several squirrels get within 10 yards and not see me. I had some non-game birds get pretty close. The funniest was on the 2nd to the last day, I was sitting on the edge of this clearing on the edge of the woodline where I saw 3 does the day before come out at dusk. About 200 yards behind me was normal park stuff like picnic tables but it wasn't a big deal because this whole wing of the park was closed for deer hunting. I was sitting on a little stool behind a small brush pile. Besides, a tree about 10 yards away from me, I was completely exposed on all angles except for looking at this woodline 50 yards in front of me. I was wearing old OCP blouse, pants, a boonie and the mesh mask all descented with Dead Down Wind. About an hour before dusk, 4 dogs suddenly appear and started playing in my shooting lane about 10-20 yards in front of me shortly followed by a woman in her 50s. They were near me for a good 2-3 minutes completely oblivious to my existence until the smallest dog went to sniff the brush pile I was behind. It was at that moment that I was busted. I definitely startled that poor woman. Lol. I had to explain to the woman at that time I was hunting and she isnt actually supposed to be there. TLDR; Military camo works just fine for hunting.

Bear in mind what colors your patterns will fade to. The whole reason we do this is for survivability/longevity, so we need to consider how our camp patterns will wear/fade over time, for when you can’t go get new sets. That is of course unless you can afford to buy a lifetime supply now. For example, multicam gets pretty dang bright tan when it fades.

In my studies on camo, I found it’s actually unpredictable on which one to use, because you never know if you’ll be by rocks, or in trees, or in muddy areas. It’s always best to choose your territory and know your territory if you can, but I think choosing the camo style doesn’t really matter because the one you choose won’t be the one that works. It’s more important to take cover and ghillies always work better anyways.
@chrism5508

I was hoping you guys would go into different camo signatures under night vision and how certain materials and even detergents have color intensifiers that light up under NODs. Most military camo is required to mitigate this, what most people don't realize is that the sweet accessory pouches they bought off ebay or amazon usually don't follow this standard nor do some name brand hunting camo. It's also a little complicated as well because green, live vegetation tends to illuminate under NODs and camo with a low NIR signature can stand out like dog balls if everything else is lit up, but works great in dead vegetation with low light signatures. Really you could probably do a whole video on camo under NODs just because of the amount of rabbit holes you can get sucked down. Awesome video though.

It was pretty interesting tbh. they werent looking for us, so they didnt see us. mind you this is a dirt road and they were going like 10 mph so it was a relatively slow roll on by, not blazing at like 45 mph.

Multicam tropic top and M81 bottom would be perfect around me. So would vietnam tiger strip bottoms and swedish m90 up top. In fact, any "dark" camo bottom and lighter green top would work really well. Here in Canada, we have a lot of boreal forests, which are almost neon green up high, so camos that are heavy with green work great up top, but there are lots of dark brown trunks, so darker camos work better for bottoms.

I joined the Army before BDUs when we had only fatigues, field pants, and wool shirts in the winter. When BDUs came out we could only get one set at a time. I was in the infantry stationed in Germany, we were at the M60 machine gun range. And while waiting our turn to fire, and after, we waited in the wood line across the Tank trail from the range. I was looking over at a soldier in my unit wearing BDUs I could see him fine, then I saw a pair of black shiny boots sticking up out of the grass. I could barely make out the OD Green fatigue pants attached to the boots or the guy laid back against a tree only maybe four or five yards away from me. After that I wore my fatigues until they were no longer authorized a few years later. Our unit was authorized to wear what we called Baumholder Jackets that were custom made by our Battalion Taylor. Usually they were made from an old OD Green poncho or wet weather top, and a poncho liner or a wool blanket. Mine was made from a poncho and poncho liner with a hood and elastic waistband. It blended in well in the woods. If I cammied up with face paint, there were times you could nearly walk right on top of me before being spotted if then. At a distance it all blends in. So the pattern doesn’t matter much. Movement matters and so does skin color. A face will stick out like a beacon without cammy paint on. If I were hunting keen eyed animals. I may opt for hunter’s camouflage patterns. But for the sh*t hits the fan. I’ll go for my OD green field jacket and maybe some BDUs or whatever I can find. If it’s really serious perhaps I’ll make myself a ghillie suit.

Me and my cousins played hide and seek and I went to the edge of the woods and I just slumped over in a strange shape next to a brushy stump. Eventually I was the last one left and I began calling people over. Within TEN FEET of me none of the five seekers saw me. Since then I’ve been a big fan ghilli suits and trust them pretty well

Sometimes the actual garment has certain features and they only make it in certain patterns. Pants and jackets with side zip ventilation is a big one. I spend ALOT of time in the woods with a pack throughout the year. Hiking some big hills WV PA type and being able to dump heat is a big deal as well as quick drying base layers. Getting dry fast when it's cold makes a difference if your spending days consecutively in the woods. I think the best camo for eastern woodland areas is a ghille cobra hood. Carcoujou makes a very nice one bit you pay the price. The actually pattern becomes less important with a solid ghille setup.

It's funny you say that. I've played around with "what if" scenarios regarding urban combat. My observation is that if you're trying to move discreetly through in urban environment in any kind of combat situation, literally dressing like everyone else or as a tradesman goes a long way to people ignoring you. The same applies to other environments: dress like what you see around you.

I really appreciate you talking about how what you wear tells a story, and how big a role movement plays. I think one of the best examples is these kids who show up to airsoft wearing a ghillie suit and end up being some of the most visible people on the field because they don’t sit still. The human brain knows bushes don’t get up and walk around. My dad always says about the same thing you did for hunting. Many a time he’s been out in jeans and a flannel and seen more deer than anyone simply because he knows how to sit still. My short advice to anyone reading is thus: spend time in the woods. Videos like this are fantastic but nothing will teach you like getting out there and experiencing some of this stuff, actually seeing how your buddy wearing jeans and a T-shirt can all but disappear because he stops moving, or how someone becomes practically invisible when you add camo to that.

MARPAT out west near Yuma, MC Arid coming a bit closer east during the summer, MC in the lower mountains and around much of the southern part of the state, and M81 above 7500 or so. Even mixes of solid coyote browns, tans, FDE, OD green, and RG can work in a wide part of the state throughout much of the year. Old sea story for ya: the NWU Type 3's, which at the time were only used by SpecOps, EOD, SeaBees. In 2011 they got extended to certain Master at arms commands like mine: PRP Bangor Washington. The current version of thebtype 3's are not as good as 2011 but i digress. I was on the convoy route with my partner when out platoon commander came up to have a word with him. My pole gate was in a clearing of about 50 yards, until the forest began. And being western Washington, it was a mix of dark and light forestry, mostly dark. I WATCHED them walk away to just before the forest starts again. I looked away to scan my surroundings, and i looked back to where they were. When i tell you the Marine had disappeared, i mean it. The ONLY reason i knew they hadn't gone further into the flrest was because i could barely see his hands. I couldn't even see the movement of his arms, just his hands. The Sailor next to him in Type 3's was almost as camouflaged as he was, and the only reason I "see" him was because he happened to be standing in from of a dark patch of forest. Even then, i could barely make him out. It was mind blowing. And to think the USMC spent only 250k to develop one of the best camo patterns to grace this earth

I barely bother too much about hunting camo because I know full well being seen is the least of my worries. I worked on a whitetail deer ranch and learned a lot about deer. Including the fact they don't see the reds, yellows and oranges as they are they see them as muted greens and browns. Either way I worry about smell and sound over anything. A deers eyesight might not be great but its nose and hearing are fantastic and will give you away before they ever see you. But on the topic for the prairies the best camo I've found in the fall is Mossy Oak Shadowblades it mimics the look of tall grass and crops.

From my knowledge : A light colour is better for the upper body to negate the shadow of the body, but you need to watchout for the reflection of the light on you. A small and lightly darker patern is better on the legs, you have less body shadows and way more natural shadows on you. Destructiring the round parts of the body can go a long way. Hunting camos are reactive to IR and NVG, they are really bright. If you have an helmet, get something to cover the round shape, like what the israely forces have.

The biggest thing with camouflages is actually how much you are expecting to be moving because seeing a walking group of leaves is a whole lot more obvious than a thing that could be a human or could be a animal moving that is just the same color as the environment that is why if they are still people in ghillie for the environment are the hardest to spot but if they start walking you see them easily

So I’m from the northeast where we have distinct seasons so my choice of hunting attire changes throughout the year. When stuff is still green like right now, usually I’ll just wear olive drab. Old school mossy oak green leaf works well in green wooded areas, and so does m81. When everything is brown during the fall, old school bottomland is a good choice for me, but sometimes I just wear a brown/tan flannel coat and some coyote brown pants and I can have game come extremely close to me(I’ve had deer at roughly 15 feet away while sitting on a log wearing just that). For snowy woods my favorite is hands down old school trebark. But the cover around you is equally as important as what you wear, your latest greatest Camo clothes don’t do you any good standing out in the open.
