Falconry is half sport, half conservation. There are plenty of websites out there that explain it in in more detail than I can cram into a youtube comment box. Trust a stranger on this: more than one species of falcon has survived extinction thanks to falconers and the birds they keep. Sharing your food is a small price to pay for living to see your first and second birthdays. Most wild born hawks are not so lucky.

Very nice video. One of these beautiful creatures swooped down in my yard yesterday scoping my chihuahuas which is how I ended up here. I wondered if it was trying to see which one was slower or weaker. It was so beautiful, but I know now that I will need to extremely careful when I take my babies out...those things are deadly. Thanks for the video.

@cwfhjeff @egcivicturbo The thing is, all of the falconry birds are from either the falconidae or the accipitridae family. The accipiters like goskawks, cooper's and the shap-shinned are from the accipritinae sub family, to these we commonly call them hawks. Then comes the buteoninae family, including all buzzards (harris too) but in many separated groups, in the buteo group red tails are classified, along with many other species. and in the other are the parabuteos.. Harris hawks.

I know for sure you can hold a falconer's bird on your hand if the falconer is there. I'm not sure if you meant "hold" as in possessing a bird or literally holding it.

Greetings from White Sands New Mexico. I suspect that I am seeing Red Tailed Hawks in my area. I live at the foot of a mountain just out side of Alamogordo,NM. I have seen and heard hawks that resemble the Red Tail Hawk, but after searching several sites on the internet. I find very little information about these birds and my area. The information I have found has either been very vague or lacking in content. I would like to compare the Red Tail Hawk to The New Mexico Raven.

You know what... You can think what you want. Im a falconer with a a year and a half old Red-tailed falcon. His name is chubbles and we don't usually hunt. We are friends. Most falconers don't use it just for hunting. Most falconers bond with there friend. So Make sure you think before the next time you insult a friend.

@shanu7uday Eagles are the largest, and are built for soaring. Hawks are medium sized, and built for smaller forests. Falcons are smallest, and are built for speed. Eagles can hunt large animals like wolves and goats, hawks stick to rabbits, gophers, and squirrels, and falcons typically hunt other birds like ducks and sparrows.

I have a question for anyone out there: how old do you have to be to get a permit in colorado? I can't find it on any of the websites. Also that is absolutely beautiful bird. I am sooo jealous of you. And hope to become a falconer someday

You cant be an apprentice until you're 14. The laws may have changed but last time I checked you can't even hold a falcon on your hand (they are all protected birds) without a permit. The cost of feeding one is about $1-3 a day and the 'cage' is actually an outdoor mews that costs upwards of $300, but more likely going to cos $600 or more. It also has to be inspected by a state wildlife agent before you can house a bird in it.

@HawkLuver I know is a natural prey for the redtails, as well as snakes, but i wouldn't chase snakes with a redtail (or any) hawk. And very nutritious, they seem to like squirrel meat a lot. I flown harrises (as well as several types of long wings) and hunted mostly rabbits and jacks, with the ocassional squirrel now and then.

OK, now I'm not a Falconer, though I've always wanted to be one, but am I understanding you correctly? A Red Tailed hawk is NOT a buteo but is an accipier? My understanding is that accipiters have a distinctive way of flying - flap, flap, flap, coast. I have Cooper's hawks, Red Tailed hawks and Turkey Vultures in abundance around here and I thought the Coopers were accipiters and the Red Tailed hawks were buteos (jamaicensis or there abouts). Am I wrong?

@Amadaria- in some states the laws have changed to allow 12 year olds to become apprentices. I know arkansas still says 14 though, because that's where I am and I had to wait. As for not even being able to hold one without a permit, I devy

i had an immature red tail that i had trapped but i had to let it go about 2 months later because it had a virus called pox and having her captive didnt make it better so we let her go in a nice environment full of rabbits, and btw why were u lewer flying your only supposed to do that with kestrals and small birds of falconry

If you want to get your falconry license the first thing you'll wan't to do is go to Bird guy's Falconry page falconry test look at what you need to study then go online to your state's DNR website and get their phone number. call them and ask to take a falconry exam. By this time you'll know what to do next. P.S. the California Hawking Club Apprentice study guide will be a big help.
