I grew up in Huntington Beach and remember those oil wells. We always stayed away from that area because of the smell and oil in the sand along the coast.

anyone who had the sense to buy a place in Naples in the 50's is of course very wealthy now. I just visited last week in LB...Naples always looks great. Belmont Shore, though, has lost its old charm. Remember Hoefly's ? The Belmont Theater? Steak-O-Rama? Funny story...my mom said when she was going to Wilson HS, she and the girls went drinking down in Naples, and my mom threw up into the canal. Great clips.

The ferry suggests it is San Diego. The ferry ran from San Diego to North Island at the end of the Coronado peninsula and was the quickest means of getting to Coronado prior to construction of the Coronado Bridge. Thanks for sharing.

@3:28 is SANTA MONICA/VENICE area. The canals went from just south of Venice Blvd north to San Vicente. The collonades started at Venice Bch pier and terminated at Pacific Ocean Park pier at Santa Monica. Those canals in the video are unmistakable. They were designed to appear like the Italian Riviera.

I'm not sure if the Italian design and architecture motif continued down the coast to LB areas or fi they still used it down in OC...Ive never seen any sign of it in HB, NB, or Laguna

Long Beach had canals too. The bay shots looks more like that but I'm not sure, didn't arrive there till '75

I’m the second shot, with the palm tree park area. That is Huntington Beach squirrel park, those palm trees are now massive, but still planted like that today

Hmm.. can't seem to find a "Huntington Beach squirrel park" in google maps. What that a typo? did you mean "Central Park"?

@@TrikeSquadron look up off 6th and peacan st, it’s not a real park, locals call it that because of the amount of squirrels, but the palm trees are aligned there, there is a library near by. Just looks like that area to me a lot

2:22 is definitely Huntington Beach Pier... I shot the same video... only 65 years later! Those oil derricks along the beach looked so terrible! 3:28 I think it's Newport but I'm not sure but it's definitely NOT Huntington. Man it's really hard to recognize locations from almost 70 y/o films... But kinda fun anyway!

Huntington Beach does have Huntington Harbor.. it could be the border of seal beach and huntington harbor not sure since things have changed but it looks like the seal beach area to me

@cwhitesb thanks! Someone else sent me an email identifying the old power plant and the Naples area. Very cool to see how it looked compared to today. Thanks for the comments and info!
