I'm s guy that grew up with addicted parents , hated drugs, then got addicted myself. I have fought and fought for many years. Messing around with Vikodin turned into a heroin habit for me. Even though I wanted to stop I couldn't. I would leave treatment or jail with a little time under my belt and use the first day home. I went through cycles of often being dopesick for years and I would always go back to using. Even when I wanted to be done, I wasn't. I have been clean now long enough to get comfortable with myself. To actually see and feel and enjoy the benefits of it. Unfortunately, addiction is so powerful that getting healthy and happy without drugs can be a very long, life draining process. Opiates will turn the toughest man into a sniveling punk. Much love to anyone in the struggle. All we can do is fight.

Exactly. I follow this issue very closely and NEVER do people mention the complete and utter failure of the DEA at preventing the flood of cheap heroin/fentanyl. Sounds like they need to be fired and let someone capable and effective handle the heroin epidemic. The crackdown on prescriptions will accomplish nothing except more heroin addicts since heroin is more abundant than water due to the DEAs total failure at everything they have every done including heroin

As a ex addict I thank god every day I didnt end up like this. I got out after several attempts on my own life. I walked out a mental hospital for adlttempted suicide and a major addiction. That was my 2nd time in a place like that. God damnit I hated it at the time!!! So much! That placed saved my life. I sobered up after almost 5 years and my ex drew up lines of heroin after I told her I was done. I did one that night and lost it. I cried n freaked out. She just simply said "ok if u want to quit I just wont tell u when I have it." I have been getting high with this woman for almost 5 years. I would know. I told her either she quits to or I'm leaving. Well long story short i left. I have been sober since August 24th 2018. I have since met the woman of my dreams and we have a beautiful 7 month old. I have a steady job (for the first time in my life. It's been almost 10 months compared to 5 or 6 tops!) I have gained weight and everyone that has known me for years is constantly telling me how happy n healthy I look. I pray for those in this situation every single day. May u find ur reason and happiness and beat this disease like I did. God bless!!!

Sorry to hear about the crocodile epidemic in Russia. In America we have the opioid and meth epidemic. They're making meth out of gun bluing chemicals and causing people to go blind or become paralyzed. They put a rope and suspend it above the gun bluing solution and selenium crystals form, which they shoot up in their veins. Technically it's not meth, but it gives them the same high, but over time they get selenium poisoning from it. Many times they will also mix it with meth. Selenium is needed in the body in small doses like micro grams and is in multi vitamins in small doses, but they're getting milligrams of this stuff in their body. When I grew up the drug of choice was alcohol, and nicotine, but nowadays these kids have a lot more destructive drugs that they're using.

Nobody is asking the big question - why aren't they suing the doctors who prescribed the pills? The distributors did nothing but ship what the doctors (licensed professionals with MD behind their name) prescribed. Besides that, when will addicts start taking responsibility for their own actions? They knew they were misusing the pills and getting them by illegal means, i.e., lying to doctors. It is just wrong to act like being an addict absolves you from all consequences. It doesn't. Yes, they need help. They also need accountability.

The biggest reason they go after the pharmaceutical companies is because when they put Oxycontin on the market, they told doctors it was safe. They told them that the trials showed it wasn't as addictive as other pain killers like percoset and lorcet. They told the FDA, the doctors and the public it was the safest and most effective pain medicine for people with MODERATE TO SEVERE pain. They lied. Oxycontin is addictive within the first month or two of being on it. It's something they should only give to people with chronic SEVERE pain like debilitating RA, MS or cancer. Not your typical back injury like mine where I live with moderate pain every day and occasional severe pain. I don't even ask my doc for narcotics but I have days so bad that I can barely get out of bed but I push thru it and I still work full time. It can be done. Everyone just wants a get better quick pill. Problem is that this one will turn you into an addict and kill you. AND... it causes the people that honestly, truly need it to be looked at suspiciously or like me, not even ask for meds.

Here in our northern California town city council took drastic steps to stop addicts and homelessness: told them they had 30 days to get clean or move on, homes that didn't sell in a matter of time were torn down to stop addict squats, ended homelessness, drove out MS-13. Many dealers come to sell and get kicked out the same day. Even Bay Area ppl have moved up here. We have new subdivisions and improvements. Reason why I won't move. Change is possible. If cities won't fight this mess takes over and strangles towns and cities.

I don't have empathy for any of them. These same people blamed the crack epidemic on the victims, arrested the people who were impacted and treated them like criminals leaving broken communities to suffer. Now these same people want to be considered victims and want the pharmaceutical industry to rescue them because they chose their fate. Where are those boot straps they so famously told black people to pull up? I want more prisons so these people can be criminalized for their choices. It seems to me they requested pain medications, noone forced it on them.

I am truly sorry! I am sorry that I don't feel one ounce of pity for anyone addicted to heroin or any other drug by their own choice. As a former addict I can say there were always warning signs, and cautions made, but ignored. Death comes in powder or pill form.

It’s not the manufacturers that are to blame or complicit, it’s the doctors. They provide prescriptions with impunity and scant regard to long term effects.

Yoga and isometric exercises helped me (20+years of H) a lot to fight withdrawals (like pushing your hands together in front of your chest). If you can, try to avoid Methadone! It's much more addictive than H - hydromorphone, if you can get it, is much easier to wean yourself off of! You can do it 😘❤️

When I went to America (DC), I started seeing those CDC billboards everywhere: on the metro, in the streets, near important places... It made me so incredibly sad. People around me seemed to filter it out, as if their eyes skipped over it because they saw it everywhere. I paid attention to those signs. I'm a 15 year old girl from Belgium and we don't have anything like that in our country. The billboards, I mean. Our people seem to think that if you don't speak about it, it simply disappears. I'm allegedly too young to join the discussion. Everyone seems to think that if you start doing drugs, you should just seek things out for yourself, because drugs are a choice. Does nobody see the agony? What about the countless addicts who started off with prescription drugs? The government plays a role as well... Don't get me wrong, of course people are responsible in the moment they decide to turn to hard drugs. But if people have made a mistake - what are they supposed to do? Fade away and die miserably, or attempt to seek help and rot in jail for the rest of their days? Is there at least anyone else who tries to understand this problem without having been through it themselves? I sincerely empathize with anyone struggling...

This is why we need a single-payer, government-run healthcare system nationwide, kids. When the government has to approve and pay for every prescription, no doctor would be so callous and carelessly prescribe opiates in exchange for cash. It is heartbreaking to see what my college town has become.

All the people saying that the doctors should be sued you're letting your ignorance show. The doctor is not responsible for a patient not following the instructions and deciding to abuse their prescription. And many times addicts doc hop and it's difficult to catch the fact that they're drug seeking sometimes. Believe me, when an E.R. doc gives pain meds to someone that the staff remembers is a drug seeker, they beat themselves up for it. It's not the doctor's job to police these people. But, they try. As soon as the E.R. staff suspects a drug seeker, we call the other hospitals to alert them too because sometimes people will leave one facility and go straight to another. Are there unethical doctors out there that run pill mills? Absolutely. But, they are the minority. The patients are the ones that are responsible for what they do to their body. Period.

I don’t get how you can hold pharmaceutical companies accountable simply for making opioid drugs that serve a Legit purpose. What are they supposed to do? Not make them? If anything the responsibility lies with the individual taking them and the doctor to be very educated in addiction and do their best to monitor their patient and slowly taper them off

Yes, Huntington is a mess from all the opioids. Anywhere you go there’s people nodding off, needles lying around, the run down drug houses in the middle of otherwise nice residential areas. I’ve been in that Kroger’s. A BP gas station I stopped at had three people on the ground leaning against the side of the building, all high. And they weren’t kids, more like in their 50s, but maybe just looked that way. It wasn’t always like this. You just didn’t see people all high and the place full of that look of poverty.

It is not anyone's fault other than the very person that is making their own free will choice to go to the doctor and lie, not take their medicine as prescribed, report to the doctor their pain is better (if there ever was any), and so forth. Should Jack Daniels be sued every time someone is diagnosed with alcoholism or liver disease? No. That was that persons choice to keep lifting the bottle. What the problem is, is that people DO NOT want to accept the consequences of THEIR free will choices that have been made. It's much easier to play the blame game. It's not the drug companies fault, or the doctors fault, it's the persons fault for not making better choices. Period.
