Hurricane Andrew makes landfall in south Florida on 8/24/1992 at 5 AM EDT. This is probably one of the best reports from the Weather Channel ever during a hurricane. It is calm, informative and almost chilling. There is no HYPE or sensationalism with this as there is with any storm that TWC deals with today. This is how is used to be and how the media should be today.

In 2002, there was a reevaluation of Andrew of all the data that was collected over the years and it was re-designated as a Category 5 at Landfall. That is why for 10 years and during Andrew you did not see mention of a 5

I really can't believe it took 10 years for that to happen. I feel like there was ample opportunity to assess the wond damage in the immediate aftermath.

It started going downhill in the late 90s, but when NBC took it over they totally ruined the station! There are so many people who hate how it has turned out and there should be something (grassroutes) movement to regain the old weather channel. I really think they do not need a ratings boost with hype and death. It was once a respectable channel.

27 years actually. I had a conversation with Jim Cantore in person during Hurricane Sandy last year and brought up several questions that many old timers would want to ask. As far as I remember, he was reluctant to answer them, but do agree that a lot has changed in the Weather Channel's political infrastructure, especially with "losing a lot of great, old timer meteorologists" after Landmark sold TWC to NBC.

The eye of Hurricane Andrew hit south of Coral Gables, near Homestead, so where he was at, he would of felt mostly Cat 1-2 winds with rain. Most of the destruction was right near the eye of this one, hence why the Miami area was okay but Florida City/Homestead looked like a nuclear bomb went off.

@@MisterMichaelVReyes Miami still had some damage from Andrew, but not like Homestead, Florida City, Cutler Ridge (now Culter Bay), and those other southern Miami suburbs.

This is the type of professionalism that you'll never see on TWC nowadays. TWC was almost somewhat of a public service back in those days, closely aligned with the Nat'l Weather Service (which they now avoid if at all possible, even removing mentions of NOAA Weather Radio from NWS advisories before they scroll them). TWC is now just another typical entity in this vast "zoo" of cable media, relying on sensory overload to fulfill their purpose which is to entertain and/or scare.
@Dac719
@Dac719 14 жыл бұрын
I hear you. Maybe if enough of us complain to the corporation who bought TWC, they'll loosen their grip and TWC can go back to the way they used to be. Would that work? What I miss the most about TWC were the WeatherStar4000 graphics they used to use.

@TornadoWarning You are right. I had watched the Weather Channel from Day 1 back in the 80s. It has morphed into this huge commercial industry. Its not that bad though where I hate it, but I no longer feel that family type personality it had back then Dennis Smith, Mark Mancuso, John Hope, Bruce Edwards,etc., etc. Those OC Meteorologists were what carried the Channel. It was a different time back then, and it shows on all networks how time can change formats, and viewer appreciation.

According to the website, I need some kind of Microsoft thing with a service pack to run the emulator program. This computer has had many problems with viruses (along with a couple crashes), so I don't know if I feel safe with downloading this program...at least, not now, anyway. This is my dad's computer, too, so I have to make sure he feels okay with it before I do this. Our security system is not fully functioning and we don't know how to fix it.

Is Andrew a 4 or a 5? I think it was a 5 I think. I was REALLY scared. The howling winds scared me. I had to hide into the bathroom with my family for safety. Andrew totally destroyed my Dad' s house in the Hammocks where I lived at the time in Miami and we didn't have power for days and I had to stay at a hotel with my dad and brother.

the music was actually better when I was a kid in the '80s. They played hit background music such as the Eurythmics "here comes the rain again" instrumental part during local "NWS forecasts." The weather channel is too "glossy" now... :(

slowmanEF, whaddya mean "all shows, no weather"? Hey, at least they put shows on 7pm and 11pm on weeknights and 5pm, 7pm, 9pm, 11pm and 1am on weekends (Eastern Time)! At least they put the "L-Bar" on the 8s during Storm Stories or Forecast Earth. But they still show weather! Hey, if you don't wanna watch TWC because of the shows and the "hype", then don't watch it. There's always your local 24-hr. digital TV weather station or NBC Weather Plus or those other weather websites. Just my 2 cents.
