Hurricane Bob was the last hurricane to directly strike the New England Coastline in August, 1991. Video from the Weather Channel.
Toward the end of the video you can still see the eye off of the New Hampshire coast on its approach to a final landfall in Brunswick, Maine.

Bob was just below major hurricane threshold. It was a high end Category 2. 110 mph winds. Even though its moving over colder water temperatures, if its moving rapidly it doesn't have time to weaken because its not spending enough time over the colder water, which would otherwise diminish its effects.

I went through "Bob" in central Connecticut. Despite being hit by the weaker side of the hurricane, the wind was wild, trees were down, and the power was out for days. The storm itself was in and out of the area quick. At 7AM as was quiet, by noon, the storm was full-tilt. By 4PM all was clear. Wild day that was in New England. I can only imagine what Sept 21, 1938 was like.

New England hurricanes are rare. 1815, then there didn't have another until the infamous 1938 hurricane. 6 years earlier they also had Hurricane Gloria.

being a worcester, ma resident for all my life and being 11 years old when bob hit, it was amazing ... it really got me into meteorology and especially extreme weather ... my family has been around the new england area through a lot of hurricanes and most notably the 53 tornado in worcester ... in a weird way i am kind of hoping earl hits here, i find it exciting .. now, i don't wish harm upon anyone or damage (of course it will happen) but i love having nature at it's worst right in my backyard

The fact that there are millions of more people residing in New England since Bob shows that *when* another hurricane hits, many won't be prepared because they've never experienced one before. Not to mention how much the coast has been built up in the past 20 odd years...

I remember driving my sister in law to wildwood n.j. to meet up with the family on vacation at the time. heavy rains and high winds on the garden state parkway most of the way down since i was riding into it. 30 to 40 miles an hour top speed on the g.s.p. it took us 6 hours to get there from north jersey on a trip that takes 3 to 4. it was a stupid thing to do and should have waited it out.

Its bound to happen in the next couple of years, but a big one like the 38 hurricane could cause damage over 30 billion dollars in damage and it would be bad for the economy. Bob was a nasty storm winds gusted well over 100mph here in Plymouth Ma

@HERPTOLOGY44 That's because you were in New England. I was in central long island. Bob for us brought a top wind gust of 52 mph here. Irene gave us a wind gust of 91mph. Sorry, I should have mentioned where I'm from. It's just that we are in 2 different places which can make a big difference in wind speed.

I was 6 when Bob came through ..I'll never forget it .I'm actually hyped up over Irene. It is scary .... but still a little exciting ... I live in NH ... and It gets me pissed that we are somehow never reported on on the weather channel .. thus far I have heard about Irene hitting every fucking state around me .... even though the path of Irene covers my whole state!! I think they forgot NH is in New England!!! even in the old Bob footage they somehow forgot about NH even though we got hit hard!
