Hurricane Helene becomes powerful Category 4 storm before landfall

Hurricane Helene brought destructive winds, torrential rains and the possibility of a catastrophic storm surge to the Gulf Coast and Panhandle of Florida. Officials said most people were complying with evacuation orders. The effects of the storm will be felt as well in Georgia and South Carolina. NBC News' Tom Llamas reports from near Tallahassee.
Beyond Florida, Hurricane Helene was causing problems in Georgia, with Atlanta expected to see a foot of rain and destructive winds. NBC News' Priya Sridhar reports from Atlanta.

Dude 70 mph sustained winds aren't bad, we have thunder storms worst than that. Micheal with sustained winds of 200 that is storm. If winds aren't above 130 and u aren't in storm surge u will be fine. I have lived through more storms since 1978

@@AFloridaSonyeah but there’s definitely less stressful places. The hurricanes are like every year now, it’s so stressful. I ended up here because of family. I grew up in upstate NY, no major life threatening weather events. Occasional blizzard conditions, but those are much more survivable than a cat 4+ hurricane. I went through Ian here 2 years ago and I still have ptsd. I really want to leave FL when I can. Plus all summer is insanely hot and humid and gross. We only get a break of nice weather in like January.
